EXCLUSIVE: Dixie Carter tells PWTorch in March why it was the right time to take Impact TV on the road

Six months ago, TNA president Dixie Carter talked in-depth to PWTorch about why March 2013 was the time to move Impact out of the Impact Zone in Orlando and take TV on the road. Now, TNA is reportedly considering moving TV tapings back to one location in 2014.

The following are Carter's comments from the March 6 PWTorch Livecast identifying why she felt it was the right decision to take Impact on the road...

- Carter to PWTorch editor Wade Keller: "We just felt now was the right time to try to make this move, and we’re not going to go out there and try to make ridiculous 18, 20 thousand seat venues until we feel like we can come close to selling those. I would be much more happy playing 8-10 thousand seat venue and it feeling sold out and crowded. Like in Chicago, we’ve completely sold out the floor and the entire lower bowl."

"We’re in a good place. We’ve conservatively gone out. If these first few shows are any indication whatsoever the type of business we’re going to do, we’re going to be thrilled, it’s going to be a huge success for us. But if we struggle, we’ll continue to work and try to build it. But I don’t think we are. I really don’t."

- Asked why TNA decided on now rather than 6-12 months ago or 6-12 months down the road, Carter said she just felt in her gut that this was TNA's make-or-break point.

"We loved the feel of live TV. That was really great, but then you sit there and go, what if it was live and you were on the road," Carter said. "Then our next step is to be live every week. That would be the goal. So it’s, again, a progression and we’ve made the decision on the pay-per-views and I just, with everything else that’s lining up - I don’t know if you ever read the book, 'The Tipping Point,' but you know you just know when all of the elements of the different companies, things are really starting to gel and things are starting to have success on levels you never ever had before, and it’s all happening across the board, it’s not just one anomaly in your company."

Carter continued: "So, in my gut, I just felt this was the tipping point and I knew the pay-per-views was a big step, but the real step was taking this show on the road. We can handle that financially now, so it’s time. People have come to see our television show from around the world for the last eight years and I am very very very excited about taking it to them."

- From a financial perspective, Carter said she felt like TNA could not justify the cost of touring every week until they reached a place where it would not put TNA in financial trouble.

"You’re just talking about every night you go out, I mean, it could be 600, 700 thousand dollars. That’s a lot of money," Carter said. "You multiply that out. It’s hard to make that up in ticket sales."

Carter continued: "So you don’t want to put yourself out of business. But the way you’re going out there, it’s not conservative, but it’s smart. Doing the two shows in one night, it’s gonna be a fast three hours of people’s time, and we get a few of those economies of scale. It’s just touring is an expensive proposition, especially when you’re touring 60 talent and 40 office people and 100 production people. It’s just, there’s a lot to it. It’s not even a concert where you have a singer and eight band members and production people."
