By James Caldwell, Torch assistant editor

TNA Impact Wrestling on Thursday, November 3 officially scored a 1.29 rating off a first hour 1.35 rating and second hour 1.22 rating.

The first hour was just behind the first hour of the October 20 episode following Bound for Glory (1.38 1H rating) for highest first hour rating of the year.

Impact then dropped off to a second hour rating in-line with the yearly average (1.19) after a strong start to the show.

Impact was boosted by a show-high 1.41 rating in the first quarter-hour. After another strong 1.39 rating in the third quarter-hour, Impact steadily dropped off for the remainder of the episode, concluding with a below-average 1.14 rating in the eighth quarter-hour for the Storm vs. Roode TNA World Title main event.

First Hour Break Down

Q1: Impact opened with a 1.41 rating for the opening talking exchange between Robert Roode and James Storm to set up their main event, plus one commercial break. This was tied for the third-highest-rated Q1 rating of the year. (up 18.5% vs. 2011-Q1 average)

Q2: Impact dropped slightly to a 1.33 rating for the KO Tag Title match of Gail Kim & Madison Rayne vs. Tara & Tessmacher, plus one commercial break. (up 14.0% vs. 2011-Q2 average)

Q3: Impact rebounded to another strong 1.39 rating for the Bischoffs in the ring, Samoa Joe backstage with Sting, and Daniels backstage with RVD, plus one commercial. This was easily the highest-rated Q3 segment of the year. (up 18.5% vs. 2011-Q3 average)

Q4: Impact dipped to a 1.27 rating for Aries vs. Sorensen in the X Division match of the week, backstage segments, and two full commercial breaks, which hurt the rating. (up 12.4% vs. 2011-Q4 average)

Second Hour Break Down

Q5: Impact rebounded with a 1.34 rating - easily the peak rating of the second hour - for the Robbie E. and Ronnie from "Jersey Shore" segment, plus one commercial break. (up 8.2% vs. 2011-Q5 average)

Q6: Impact dropped to a 1.23 rating for the Jeff Hardy & Mr. Anderson vs. Jeff Jarrett & Bully Ray tag match, plus Sting segments and one full commercial break. (up 5.4% vs. 2011-Q6 average)

(JC Analysis: With that much star power in the ring during Q6, this is where it appeared outside competition began to drag down this week's rating, people tuned out after a Jersey Shore castmember appeared on the show, or a combination of factors.)

Q7: Impact dipped to a 1.17 rating for the Matt Morgan-Crimson confrontation, plus one-and-a-half commercial breaks. (up 1.8% vs. 2011-Q7 average)

Q8: Impact dipped to a show-low 1.14 rating for the Storm-Roode main event, plus one-and-a-half commercial breaks. (down 4.5% vs. 2011-Q8 average. This was the only segment of the show below the corresponding 2011 average.)

Caldwell's Analysis: The opening segment involving Roode and Storm to set up their main event drew a strong rating, but the actual main event drew a below-average rating. There could be any number of combinations of explanations - outside competition (such as Beavis & Butthead) hurting the second hour, TNA rushing into Roode-Storm before the audience was ready, the audience losing interest in Roode's character after TNA did not have him win the title at Bound for Glory, the Jersey Shore appearance turning people off after Q5, the general audience not interested in a 15-minute main event, the lack of "big-name stars" in the final segment as TNA tries to reverse course on predominantly featuring former Attitude Era stars over TNA Originals, or other factors. The follow-up will be interesting to see if the title change creates interest next week.
