TNA wrestler Desmond Wolfe was interviewed by Fanhouse.com this weekend covering virtually every subject WWE, TNA, and ROH related in a two-part interview. The following are highlights from the interview.
-- Wolfe wouldn't give his account on what happened with WWE that led to the company removing their offer, which opened the door for him to sign with TNA.
"It's a long, long story, I can't really get into it at this juncture, but suffice to say that TNA had made me a great offer that I was ecstatic about taking," Wolfe said. "Things didn't work out with WWE, just really more of a business decision on their side than anything else, I had the all-clear to go with TNA and so I jumped at the opportunity."
-- Wolfe, who worked extensively with Bryan Danielson (Daniel Bryan in WWE), had an interesting perspective on Bryan having to work extra-harder to get to the point he's at because he's not a prototypical pro wrestler and he doesn't jump out immediately.
"I said to him the other day when I saw him, if he was born with more of that sort of look that they expect from a professional wrestler, he'd probably be a lot further along than he is already," Wolfe said. "But I think he's going to be tremendously successful. He's certainly in that sort of mold as well that gives him a lot of opportunity, and I think he stands out by not trying to stand out, you know? I think WWE and a lot of the people in WWE are trying to go, 'Ooh I'm this, and I'm wild and crazy, and look at me, I'm shouting and screaming, and I'm this character,' and he's not. He's genuinely himself, and I think people understand that and appreciate that he's not trying to do it. And once they see him wrestle, once they understand the ability that he has in the ring, then it's just gonna set him apart even more, and Vince [McMahon] seems to like him from what I hear."
-- On the subject of Ring of Honor, Wolfe said it was difficult for him working in front of the ROH crowd because they have high expectations for what they want to see in a match, but when they've seen so many matches, it's difficult to get them to react. Wolfe said he became burnt out trying to present a different match each time he worked in front of the same hardcore audience.
"I felt in Ring of Honor that the crowd, the fans have seen so much of me, and seen so many title defenses and so many of my matches, that they almost became blasé to it. They'd almost seen all my stuff, seen variations in all of my stuff, and variations of variations of all of my stuff, and I felt going out there, that like you didn't have to trick them, you'd have to trick them into thinking you were tricking them," Wolfe said. "And before you knew it, you couldn't just go out there and wrestle a regular match, you started second-guessing yourself."
Wolfe contrasted that to TNA where he doesn't wrestle as many full-length matches, the audience isn't familiar with him, and he can use more of his material over a long period of time.
"I love that now I can go to TNA and a lot of the fans haven't seen too much of my stuff, haven't seen that much of my style, so it's all new to me. I don't have to prostitute a lot of my moves, and, you know, I've developed a move set, and that's arguably one of the best things about Ring of Honor, is that you really have to genuinely establish a move set that's different to everywhere else, and different to everyone else as well. You can't just go out there and go, 'This is my finisher and I do arm-drags,' because no one is gonna take that in Ring of Honor, they want to see something different," Wolfe said. "They want to see a style, they want to see a move set they're not gonna see anywhere else, so to be good you have to establish that move set there. And then when you take that to somewhere else, where an extensive move set isn't quite so important, then that gives you a lot more longevity than a lot of the other wrestlers."
