TNA News: Kurt Angle says he wants to wrestle in the X Division, doesn't want TNA to depend on WWE cast-offs Jun 22, 2009 - 1:45:37 PM
New TNA World Hvt. champion Kurt Angle says he wants to wrestle in the X Division to elevate the division and help create new stars. Angle says TNA needs to create its own stars and not depend on cast-offs from WWE to build the roster.
"We're trying to elevate that title again to make it what it used to be. I don't think it's anything close to what it was five years ago," Angle said on The Pain Clinic radio show on Saturday before the Slammiversary PPV. "We don't want to turn it into the Cruiserweight division. We want the X Division to be just as popular as our Heavyweight division."
The X Division peaked in TNA over three years ago when it was built around Samoa Joe, A.J. Styles, and Daniels. TNA hasn't found the right combination of new wrestlers to restore the Division to "semi-main event of a PPV" status that was customary on TNA PPVs in 2005 to 2006.
Angle says he wants to get involved in the X Division to help shine the light on newer wrestlers, such as current X Division champion Suicide and Jay Lethal.
"Me, for instance, I would like to get into the X Division eventually and mix it up with those guys and go for the X Division Title," Angle said. "I think that would add more validity to it and I would enjoy wrestling a lot of those guys. Wrestling those guys will only elevate those guys and make them more popular."
