1/11 TNA Genesis PPV HOLT report: Second report - Production issues, reaction to Kip James, Vince Russo notes Jan 12, 2009 - 11:34:39 AM
PWTorch reader Brian J. Adkins sent in the following notes and observations from last night's TNA Genesis PPV in Charlotte.
-- TNA had a very vocal and passionate crowd, but looking at it in an overall perspective, it failed in a couple of ways. The no-shows were one failure, even though the sudden injuries were out of their control. Another failure (which may have been the arena's fault) was not being able to keep the screen on during the show for those who were up high, as it kept cutting in and out all night.
-- At first, the show was billed as being at the Cricket Arena, and then a couple weeks later, it was changed to the apparently new name of Bojangle's Coliseum. The arena itself still has the name Cricket Arena on the outside, but had banners on display saying Bojangle's Coliseum. This could have confused some fans. This also could not have been TNA's fault, but rather the arena for making it slightly confusing.
-- Nobody thought Kip James was a "suitable" replacement to be in the main event.
-- The opening X Division match confused some fans at first as there was no announcement that it was an elimination match until after the pinfall on Eric Young. LAX was hugely over with the crowd.
-- When Kip James was announced as the "exceptional replacement," all the air was sucked out of the building. Not even Scott Steiner was happy about it. Kip looked exhausted after a couple of minutes. Lots of "Foley" chants. Styles was over especially when he dove onto Kip through a table. Give credit to Steiner for jobbing to Foley, as i think everyone assumed it would be Kip.
-- Afterwards, Foley thanked the crowd and celebrated with some fans at ringside.
-- On a personal note, I was sitting directly above the floor and Vince Russo was below me. At first, he was alone, but then had a friend come out and talk to him. In-between matches, he was nice enough to take a picture with another fan who had spotted him. He did not leave until right before the Sting match. He seemed to have a good time with the rest of the crowd.
