Chris Rock's TNA movie shoot - Producer gets cold reaction

Torch Newsletter subscriber Jack Johnson hung around after last night's NWA-TNA pay-per-view to watch Chris Rock film scenes for the movie "Head of State," and filed the following report.

After the stiffest ladder match of all time (which saw an unscathed Syxx-Pac walk away with a very undeserved title), we all stuck around for an hour to help with Chris Rock's new movie. I actually thought we stayed at least two-hours.

The people I was around sitting ringside joked that we would get to see this segment really soon on the home video that will hit Blockbuster about six weeks after the movie opens in the theaters.

Chris Rock got hit with a rubber chair. It was a very realistic looking prop but it was so gimmicked that it made no sound and folded up like putty when he was hit with it. Funny moment: When the producer told everyone to be quiet, a loud "you suck" chants echoed throughout the building. B.G. James was near us at ringside and turned his head and said, "You can't tell a wrestling crowd to be quiet" while holding back laughter.

Rock had a stunt double that took boots from all the wrestlers while he was on the mat. Rock did work one of his own stunts - a very slow airplane spin from Jeff Jarrett. It was so slow that Rock had time to make all kinds of faces for the camera shots.

After Rock made his brief appearance during the actual TNA show and said his lines, he turned away from the camera while exiting the ring with Goldy. He gave her the "was that okay, I don't know" look along with a shrug of the shoulders. Goldy pretty much returned the look with her body language.

Rock didn't know what to make of the Nashville crowd when he first came out. He was welcomed like a king and got the biggest pop of anyone on the show. He seemed much more comfortable after the show when he came out to film his scenes.

The funniest moment of the night for me was when B.G. James referenced Karen Carpenter. That was right up there with Bobby Heenan referencing Roy Campanella every time someone had a baseball slide in WCW. Heenan later updated that to a '70s reference with Johnny Bench, but that was as current as he ever got.

I spoke with Bert Prentice after the show and I told him that was the stiffest ladder match I had ever seen live. "They just keep reinventing it, don't they?" Prentice responded. "It's amazing."
