ROH News: Report on ROH's TV development, Colt Cabana comments on early HDNet TV product Jun 25, 2009 - 3:51:27 PM
Ring of Honor is still in the developmental stage of their HDNet TV product, but after learning more about what works and what doesn't work through 15 episodes, ROH is positioned to grow as a company using the TV product as a vehicle to grab more fans.
ROH has even seen more kids and families attending the ROH TV tapings in Philadelphia. It sounds odd for families to be in the former ECW Arena, but the audience is expanding beyond a hardcore, male 18-34 demographic.
ROH cancelled their July TV taping, which would have given them enough episodes to last through October. That could have created out-of-date episodes depending on title changes, injuries, and roster changes.
Instead, ROH and HDNet will take a step back to post-produce the TV they already have and focus on creating some new features to enhance the weekly product.
ROH wrestler Colt Cabana says there's plenty of room for growth as ROH and HDNet learn more about the capability of the product.
"The ROH TV show, we're in our beginning stages," Cabana told the Southtown Star newspaper. "So far, for beginning stages, it's awesome. You remember how 'Seinfeld' was almost canceled after the first episode? And you saw how great it turned out to be."
Feedback from ROH's first set of TV episodes created instant learning experiences. Lack of crowd involvement, sound issues, and booking matches without much of a purpose made the shows seem skippable.
Now, ROH and HDNet are more focused on booking episodic TV that builds upon each episode and creates compelling match-ups that are worth going out of your way to watch.
"As a smaller company, we're growing and finding out what works and doesn't work," Cabana said. "I can only imagine how excellent the TV show is going to be in years' time."
