Former NFL star Dave Duerson committed suicide on Thursday, according to police and the medical examiner in the Miami area, and his brain will be sent to Chris Nowinski's Sports Institute lab for head trauma research.

Nowinski, the former WWE wrestler who studies the effects of head trauma and concussions on athletes, was contacted by Duerson's family to arrange the transfer. According to a note sent by Duerson, he wanted to contribute to research on chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), the degenerative disease found in individuals who have a history of repeated brain trauma.

"He had informed (his family) at some point that he wanted his brain to be studied so people could learn more about the effect of brain trauma and so kids could play the game more safely in the future," said Nowinski, the head of the Center for the Study of Traumatic Encephalopathy.

"I can confirm that Mr. Duerson's family has agreed to donate his brain to the CSTE at BU School of Medicine."

Duerson, age 50 at the time of his death, was a Pro Bowl DB for the Chicago Bears in the 1980s. Nowinski addressed Duerson's death in the Chicago press and ESPN, which ran a headline story on Saturday when news came out about Duerson's reported suicide.

"NFL players are at higher risk for CTE than normal people and probably other athletes as well," Nowinski said. "Of the 14 former NFL players we've completed studies on, 13 of them had the disease."

Duerson and Nowinski's relationship dates back to 1996 when Nowinski played high school football in the Chicago area. "His family can be rest assured that it was an incredible selfless contribution to medical research," Nowinski said.
