Other News: Former WWE wrestler Chris Nowinski appearing before U.S. Congress today to discuss concussions and head trauma Oct 28, 2009 - 2:23:39 PM
Former WWE wrestler Chris Nowinski is scheduled to appear before a U.S. Congressional committee today to discuss the long-term effects of concussions and head trauma in professional sports. Nowinski is a leading researcher in the field.
ESPN's "Outside the Lines" featured a lengthy piece on the hearings held today by a House of Representatives judiciary committee. An ESPN reporter said Nowinski's testimony will be used to establish "a link between head trauma and long-term damage" to the health of athletes.
The first round of hearings held today focused on the NFL's handling of head injuries. Two of the key proposals that were discussed for the NFL were a minimum of seven days off after an athlete is diagnosed with a concussion and having neurologists present at every NFL game.
WWE has often said in mainstream interviews that they strive to be ahead of other sports leagues in how they handle the health of their performers through their Wellness Policy.
The NFL story is worth monitoring to see if these standards proposed during the Congressional hearings are accepted. In a possible future scenario, WWE could respond by having independent doctors present at WWE shows to monitor concussions and perhaps instruct WWE to keep specific performers off shows if they suffer a diagnosed head injury.
