Pro wrestling author Irv Muchnick posted a blog with a memory of Captain Lou Albano cracking jokes to a New York Times journalist when pro wrestling was being investigated by a New York Senator in 1985.
A few months after the first WrestleMania put then-WWF on the national map, Senator Abraham Bernstein commissioned an investigation into pro wrestling to determine whether wrestling was fake and whether it had a negative influence on children.
The investigation mainly focused on the "is wrestling fake?" question, leading to a sideshow atmosphere. Muchnick recalled the boisterous Captain Lou Albano being interviewed by the Times reporter Bill Geist about the proceedings.
Muchnick recalled: "Albano told Geist that he didn’t attend Senator Bernstein’s hearing because 'some of these politicians have brains the size of dehydrated peas.' Lou also said he was well aware of the state senate bill. 'I keep abreast of the issues,' he said. 'My favorite TV show is 'Face the Nation.'"
The Senator's goal with the investigation was to pass a bill banning pro wrestling in the state of New York. However, the bill did not pass. Muchnick writes that the Senator was too focused on the childish question of whether wrestling is "fake" instead of seeking "toothful regulation of this industry."
