Other News: Former WWE wrestler Chris Nowinski quoted in AP story covering Tim Tebow's concussion Sep 30, 2009 - 10:25:16 AM
The AP ran an important story on brain damage research following high-profile Florida Gators QB Tim Tebow's concussion during a college football game on Saturday. The report quoted former WWE wrestler Chris Nowinski, who is studying the effect of concussions on the human brain with the Sports Legacy Institute.
"In some ways, we've shed light on the issue. But in terms of true science, what it means to strap on a helmet and run into someone at 20 mph, we're still in the dark ages," Nowinski told the AP.
Nowinski is fighting against the "oh, it happens all the time" sentiment that is prevalent with big-time college and pro athletes. Memory loss is common when a person suffers a concussion and the AP quoted a teammate of Tebow who dismissed any lingering effects.
"Everyone gets concussions. Stuff like that happens," said Florida LB Ryan Stamper. "There's just a part of your life that you don't remember."
After suffering the concussion on Saturday afternoon, Tebow was kept overnight at a hospital before being released on Sunday. Florida has suggested he will be able to return for the next game on October 10. Nowinski suggests research down the road would show that's not a wise decision.
"It wouldn't surprise me in five years to prove that brains don't adequately recover for 4-6 weeks," he told the AP.
