The Dec. 8 edition of TIME Magazine provided short reviews for many of the holiday season movie releases. Regarding "The Wrestler" starring Mickey Rourke, it said the movie "is sentimental junk, a 'Rocky' retread complete with a cheerleading Adrian figure (nicely fleshed out by Marisa Tomei). Director Darren Aronofsky has made exactly the kind of bad movie that Academy voters love. And no question, Rourke is the year's chunkiest Oscar bait."
Keller's Analysis: This is the first review I've seen that trashed the movie. Everything else so far, from PWTorch readers who have sent reviews after viewing it at film festivals to other publication reviews, has given high praise to the movie and Rourke's performance in particular.
well i guess in the same way Rocky won best picture in 1976 it would seem
the bitter reviewer thinks the same will happen this time around. Seems
like an odd way to compliment a film.
So are they saying they don't like the Academy's choices and therefore
don't like most of the movies up for awards this year? Or is this person so
turned off to wrestling they can only glance at how a male athlete has a
girlfriend and instantly compare it to Rocky. I guess it can be said it
follows a basic formula, but the person reviewing it apparently doesn't see
the nuances that make it stand out to just about everyone else who has seen
it thus far. I'll take this with a grain of salt.

I never listen to these losers anyways. They're the smae people who like to
say The Dark Knight sohuldn't be nomiated for anything because it's a
superhero movie. Don't they know Batman isn't a superhero, hes a
crimefighter. The movie looks great to me and I can't wait to see it. The
trailer reminds me of watching Jake the Snake Roberts on Beyond the Mat.

This just reminds me of the great Foley promos back in ECW about how pro
wrestling will never be respected by the mainstream. The article doesn't
seem to take any digs at wrestling per se, but it seems similar to those
smarmy chuckles the Sportscenter guys are apparently obliged to make
whenever the topic of wrestling comes up.
