Other News: Bret Hart discusses whether his wrestling career is over; describes second book project Nov 18, 2008 - 12:06:04 PM
Former WWE champion Bret Hart is still recovering from the 2002 stroke to the point where he has recovered 90 to 95 percent of his normal faculties, and he's looking to take advantage of his current health to pursue opportunities after wrestling.
Hart is wrapping up a U.S. book signing tour in Florida tomorrow and Minnesota on Thursday, then he'll pursue a second book and potential film school. Asked whether this is the end of his wrestling career, Hart says, "I think so. You never know what tomorrow will bring. I don't know what opportunities will present themselves."
"I'm working on another book -- a novel," Hart told Jeff Wilen in the Daytona Beach Journal about what's keeping him busy. "Maybe go back to film school. Maybe make movies -- taking the ability I have to tell stories."
Hart says he sees a lot of wrestlers not knowing what to do after they retire because "all they know is wrestling." Following his acclaimed autobiography reaching the Top 20 in the New York Times bestseller list, Hart says he has more to contribute even if he's not fully recovered from the stroke.
"Speaking is tough for me since the stroke," Hart said about pursuing movie roles. "I don't rule out anything."
Although Hart is out of wrestling, the injuries have stayed with him, and he'll need surgery soon. "I'm mostly concerned as to the toll wrestling took on my body. My back. My knees," he said. "I will need a knee replacement surgery in the next few months. Wrestling is a very physical job."
Hart still watches the WWE product and believes his nephew, D.H. Smith, should be given an opportunity in WWE, as he's a better athlete than people realize.
