WEEKEND PREVIEW, NEWS & NOTES
Welcome back, everyone! There’s some big indy shows this weekend, with ROH on the East Coast, IWC in Pennsylvania, and the return of IWA-Mid South to the Midwest.
Tonight, Ring of Honor heads to Boston, Mass., with Nigel McGuinness vs. the winner of a four-way, featuring Erick Stevens vs. Roderick Strong vs. Rocky Romero vs. El Generico. The lineup is below. On Saturday, ROH heads to Edison, N.J., with Nigel McGuinness vs. Kevin Steen, Kota Ibushi vs. Claudio Castagnoli, Necro Butcher vs. Roderick Strong. Keep in mind that an injury will keep Austin Aries sidelined this weekend.
International Wrestling Cartel has one of its big wrestling veteran tribute shows Saturday in Franklin, Penn., at the high school, with Demolition vs. Powers of Pain, Brutus Beefcake vs. Greg “the Hammer” Valentine, Koko B. Ware vs. Kamala, Abdullah the Butcher vs. Tommy Rich, Jake Roberts vs. John McChesney, Babyface Fire vs. Sexual Harassment. Sounds like fun.
IWA Mid-South Wrestling on Saturday heads to Joliet, Ill., with B.J. Whitmer vs. Jimmy Jacobs in a no-rope barbed-wire extreme grudge match, Eddie Kingston & Scorpio & Mickie Knuckles vs. Joker & Ruckus & Ricky Reyes. That should be a hard-hitting six-person tag!
I also wanted to talk about Justin Larouche, the mystery wrestler who appeared on ECW this week and attacked Kane. Justin is about 6’1” or 6’2”, and I’ve seen him wrestle in the Twin Cities area since 2000, although he did take a couple-year break. He used to wrestle as Hellraiser Gutts, then he switched to Magnus Maximus. I’ve always found that he’s a great heel, but I’ve never cared for him as a babyface. His strengths include some great facial expressions and he’s good on the mic. However, he does have some drawbacks. He is about 31 – about the same age as Ken Kennedy. He’s in good shape, but he’s not going to stand out as really tall among other WWE wrestlers. WWE has been aware of Justin for a long time; he actually worked a dark match on RAW in a tag encounter against Brock Lesnar – before Lesnar had debuted for WWE!
Anyhow, Justin adds to a long list of wrestlers that have left the Twin Cities wrestling scene in recent years (Austin Aries, Ken Kennedy, CM Punk, Colt Cabana, Lacey, Payton “Rain”, Shaun “Khosrow” Daivari, ODB, Lacey), and excelled on a bigger stage.
And you can always reach me with your indy results at chrisjvetter@hotmail.com. I request that you remember to say date, location (including building, city & state!), and full name of the promotion.
