WEEKEND RESULTS, NEWS & NOTES
The HUGE news of this weekend is that IWA Mid-South is on the verge of closing, after 10 years, as the promotion reaches its 500th overall show. From the official results on IWA’s board: Ian (Rotten) gave a speech to the crowd thanking Danny Trahan for all the hard work and Jim Fannin for all the loyalty and Mickie Knuckles for being a treasure and Phyllis Hickey for all that she had done for the company. He then addressed the very real possibility that IWA Mid-South will be closing its doors on December 7th. The debts have gotten too great for both Ian and Jim to be able to continue and in all likelihood, barring a complete change of heart and reversal of fortune, December 7th will likely be the end of the road for IWA Mid-South.
I wish I could say I’m surprised, but I’m not. Anyone who has read my column over the last six months has seen that IWA has gotten in a pattern of consistently promising certain workers would attend shows, only to have them cancel at the last minute. Some times it was over money, and some times it was things out of IWA’s control. But no promotion has had a bigger challenge in delivering the wrestlers they have promised. After having so many cancellations at the recent “Ted Petty Invitational (Alex Shelley, Low Ki, Samoa Joe, El Generico, B-Boy, Matt Sydal), I decided not to attend the second day of the tournament.
In Pro Wrestling Guerrilla on Sunday, Bryan Danielson defeated Roderick Strong, and Jack Evans defeated El Generico. Results are below.
In IWC, Dennis Gregory defeated Claudio Castagnoli to retain the heavyweight title.
Shimmer Women’s Athletes taped 17 matches for two more volumes on Saturday. Champion Sara Del Rey defeated Amazing Kong in the first taping, then defeated Sara Stock in the second taping, to retain her Shimmer title. Promoter Dave Prazak announced that Shimmer would take the winter off, as the promotion now has FIVE shows it must produce & release on DVD. Shimmer had a sellout of 250 paid.
In Combat Zone Wrestling, Ruckus defeated Human Tornado to retain the CZW title, while Sabian defeated Danny Havoc to win the junior heavyweight title.
In other news…
High-flyer Teddy Hart has been released by the WWE. JAPW has hinted he may return at its huge “10th anniversary” show. Hart’s release surprises me only because WWE had a ready-made “New Hart Foundation” available, with Davey Boy Smith’s son and Jim “the Anvil” Neidhart’s daughter both under contract.
ECWA has announced the names of the 8 competitors for this year’s “Super 8” tournament. Usually, this tournament is for unknown ‘diamond-in-the-rough, up-and-comers.’ So, I’m surprised that this year’s tournament features Jerry Lynn, Rob Conway, and established indy high-flyers Matt Cross and Human Tornado. The rest of the field includes Billy Bax, Rob Eckos, Brian Fury, and Matt Logan.
And you can always reach me with your indy results at chrisjvetter@hotmail.com. I request that you remember to say date, location (including building, city & state!), and full name of the promotion.
