C.M. Punk News

-- February 2: Wrestler/MMA fighter Bobby Lashley says he believes colleague C.M. Punk will be successful in UFC because of his mindset and history of success.

“What I believe is, it's going to be a really good thing and the reason it's going to be a good thing is because when you're a successful person, you learn the model of being successful," Lashley told the Mancunian Matters publication during TNA's U.K. Tour.

"Once you've learned that model of being successful, you can use that and transition into anything you want, and everything he does now is going to be successful. He's going to be in the UFC and he's going to surprise a whole bunch of people and I think he's going to beat people who he's ‘not supposed to beat,'" Lashley said. [ LINK: Full Interview HERE. -- January 30: C.M. Punk talked to USA Today about his transition to comic book writing. Punk, who has a writing role in the "Thor Annual #1" due out February 25, said he approached the gig as "the first and possibly last time I'm ever going to get to do this."

"I'm not signing on to do a 24-issue, crazy all-encompassing Marvel Universe story arc or anything like that, nor do I think they're going to give me that sort of responsibility. So, baby steps. We'll get there," Punk said. [ Preview of the Issue with sample pages HERE at ComicBook.com ]

-- January 28: UFC CEO Lorenzo Fertitta says C.M. Punk's first UFC fight will likely be a PPV co-main event when the fight is decided on. Fertitta told ESPN.com that Punk's first opponent will be "someone with some level of credentials" to legitimize the fight, and they might look outside the UFC roster.

"But I'm going to defer to (UFC match-maker) Joe Silva," Fertitta said. "We'll let him bring two to three names to the table and we'll figure it out from there. But I guarantee you it will be a competitive guy." [ LINK: Report HERE at ESPN.com ]

-- January 11: UFC fighter Anthony Pettis says C.M. Punk is at the stage of private lessons with trainer Duke Roufus at the Roufusport facility in Milwaukee, where Pettis also trains. "We don’t want to scare him away. But I’m not discrediting him because he’s definitely a great athlete. It’s just when it comes to MMA you’ve got to put it all together. His striking is going to need some improvement. His jiu-jitsu is getting improvement. He’s going to get improvement everywhere with the team, but we just want to take it slow, and he agrees,” Pettis told MMAJunkie.com in an interview.

Pettis also relayed Punk's approach to training at the facility. "He said; 'I’m not coming in with any ego. I want you to tell me when I’m ready. And when you guys think I’m ready, that’s when I’m ready.’ That shows me that he’s going to do great in the sport," Pettis said. [ LINK: Full Story HERE ]

-- January 11: C.M. Punk is officially listed as a writer for DC Comics's "Strange Sports Stories" series. The first issue is scheduled for release in March. According to Previews magazine, "Comics's top talents, including some making their Vertigo debut, take on the classic DC Comics anthology title for four issues of strange, scary, sexy, and sensational sports stories." The 40-page issue goes on-sale March 18, priced at $4.99. [ More Details on the series HERE . Thanks to Dawg. ]

-- January 10: C.M. Punk appeared on AXS TV's "Inside MMA" show to update his MMA training. Punk said he is about six months away from working with UFC officials to determine his first MMA opponent, setting up a late 2015 debut fight. "In about six months, we might entertain who I might fight," Punk said. [ Full Recap HERE ]

-- January 8: C.M. Punk's former SES stablemate in WWE, Luke Gallows, now of the Bullet Club in New Japan, weighed in on Punk shifting to UFC fighting this year in a new interview.

"The UFC move shocked me. I knew some of the other entertainment stuff he was doing, I knew he was training his ass off, I knew he was a huge fan of it, so I kinda had an inkling. And then he announced it or they announced it, whatever, and I texted him and said, 'Holy Crap dude, congratulations, I had no idea.' I just talked to him in Japan, I know he's training his butt off in Milwaukee and he's really digging that. I hope for all the best for him," Gallows told radio host Chad Dukes of CBS Radio DC's "Chad Dukes Wrestling Show." [ LINK: Full Interview HERE ]

-- January 3: C.M. Punk and his wife, WWE Diva A.J. Lee, attended Saturday night's UFC 182 PPV in Las Vegas. [ Video available on TSN.ca for Canadian readers HERE. Thanks to R Jack. ]

-- January 2: C.M. Punk was in Las Vegas for a live Q&A with Fox Sports leading into the UFC 182 PPV. Punk said his first fight will be on PPV, he is planning to fight more than once, and if he does lose his first fight "in embarrassing fashion," he will go back to the gym to train for the next one.

Punk also said that the difference between him and Brock Lesnar is that Lesnar wanted the Hvt. Title and he's "an animal," but Punk is a "smaller animal." He also said Daniel Bryan would be a WWE roster member who could transition to MMA. [ Recap via UFConFox Twitter ]

-- January 1: MMA trainer Duke Roufus of the Roufusport gym where C.M. Punk will be training for his UFC debut fight later this year provided some insight on working with Punk in an interview with MMAFighting.com. Roufus noted he actually met Punk by chance at a UFC card in January 2013 and hit it off when Punk talked about his interest in MMA.

"I’m sure everybody in the sport would love to work with him. He’s my friend first, and that’s what I enjoy about him. I like to be friendly and close with the fighters I work with because it makes it a lot easier. Everyone knows his wrestling persona; I know the real Phil. That’s why I’m excited to work with him," Roufus said. "The one thing that him and Dana [White] and Lorenzo [Fertitta] talk about, they want him to be the real deal. I’m going to be committed to help him reach his goals." [ LINK: Full Interview HERE at MMAFighting.com. Read more MMA News at our sister website, MMATorch.com.
