UFC News: Matt Hughes's opponent tomorrow doesn't make weight - fighter profile of Thiago Alvez Jun 6, 2008 - 6:07:57 PM
On Saturday, Thiago Alves will be facing Matt Hughes in the main event of UFC 85: Bedlam. Well, at least as I write this, the main event is still on for a card that has been changed so many times that the fight poster could be a picture of Dana White dressed as the Riddler and holding a plaque reading "Fighters TBA".
Alves vs Hughes IS on, though, which after the weigh-ins for this fight surely has to be a sigh of relief for Zuffa.
Thiago Alves did not make weight so this bout will be contested at a catchweight of 174 lbs, and this is not the first time that Alves has had troubles making weight. Coming off of his win over Tony DeSouza at UFC 66-Liddell vs Ortiz II, Alves tested positive for Spironolactone, a drug used mainly to treat those with heart failure and in Alves' case was used as a diuretic in order for him to be able to make the weight. His track record and this case of doping precede him and suggest that he is incapable of making the weight at 170. Either he needs to be fighting at 185 or he needs to refocus and show dedication to coming in at the proper weight. On a night where there is no belt on the line, it is ok to fight at a catchweight. If he wishes to ever seriously contend for the belt, however, he needs to be able to make weight......
