EDITORIAL: How WWE could have better handled the Vickie-Edge segment on Raw and caught up with the year 2009 Jun 10, 2009 - 10:45:09 AM

GUEST EDITORIAL
By David Miller, PWTorch.com reader
Two segments during the June 8 edition of WWE Raw were hard to watch. The first one was Legacy's beat down of Batista and the second one was Edge's verbal assault on Vickie Guerrero.
The mauling of Batista was hard to watch because they made it look very realistic. It actually looked like Randy Orton snapped Batista's arm. All the wrestlers involved in that segment should be praised.
Edge kicking Vickie Guerrero to the curb was hard to watch because it was a mean-spirited attack on a seemingly defenseless woman because of her looks. I have to agree with Wade Keller on this one. It was vile, disgusting, and disturbing. What shocked me the most was how the portrayal of a good-looking man berating and belittling a somewhat frumpy woman elicited cheers from the crowd. Is this what's acceptable in society now? Are someone's looks all that matter these days?
Of course, this isn't the first time WWE has taken this route with their female talent. Molly Holly was once the cute blonde sidekick of Hurricane Helms. Later, after no more than a change of hairstyle and wrestling attire, she was suddenly being made fun of for having a large posterior. I'm sure I'm not the only Molly fan who wondered what in the hell they were talking about. Chyna was often referred to as a beast before she had some plastic surgery and enhancement done. And, in a match some fans may remember, an anonymous fat lady was brought in for the sole purpose of The Rock shoving Billy Gunn's face into her butt.
Now don't get me wrong. I like looking at Kelly Kelly, Maryse, and Jillian Hall. I just don't see the need to be mean towards someone because they don't have the typical Diva body. Put Vickie Guerrero in a crowd with fifty other women and she won't be the prettiest lady, but she won't be the homeliest either.
Edge's tirade against her would have been fine if she hadn't stood there and screamed and bawled. She could have taken it with a smirk on her face, then told Edge the real reason the marriage wasn't consummated was because of his sexual incompetence. She could have said that her husband Eddie was more of a man than he would ever be. Now that would have popped the crowd. It also would have made her look like a strong woman who wasn't about to take any crap and she could have walked out of the ring with her head held high. You had two heels here. Why not let them both get over on each other?
The world has progressed beyond the point of judging women solely by their looks. The popularity of singing sensation Susan Boyle has proven this to be a fact. WWE needs to catch up to the rest of the world.
