GUEST EDITORIAL
By Marine Vermesse, PWTorch.com reader
Here are some possible and fanciful explanations for the Nuggets vs. Lakers match on WWE Raw this past Monday. I was wondering if the number of each wrestler had significance. I found one for everyone.
-- John Cena was wearing the number 54 - this was his number in college when he was playing football. You can find this number on his merchandising.
-- Batista was wearing the number 7. He debuted as Deacon Dave Batista as one of Rev. D-Von's followers seven years ago in May 2002 on Smackdown.
-- Mr. Kennedy was wearing the number 4. That means his four weeks as the WWE United States Champion from September 8, 2006 to October 8, 2006.
-- Jerry Lawler was wearing the number 48 because of one of his first matches in WWF on March 7, 1994. He won the main event - a ten-man Four Corners match of 48 minutes.
-- MVP was wearing the number 24. That's the number of losses he had during his Losing Streak from August 29, 2008 to January 16, 2009.
-- The Miz was wearing the number 1 due to his gimmick: he's number one in his mind ...
-- Randy Orton was wearing the number 15. He won his first WWE World Heavyweight Championship from Chris Benoit at the 2004 Summerslam ... August 15!
-- Big Show was wearing the number 99. That is the highest number you can have on a basketball jersey, as the Big Show is the heaviest wrestler in the WWE. But it's also a tribute to his WWF debut in 1999 where he defeated The Rock and Hulk Hogan to win his first WWF World Heavyweight Championship on November 14.
-- Cody Rhodes was wearing the number 6, like his six titles: OVW Southern Tag Team titles w/Shawn Spears defeating The Untouchables (October 18, 2006); OVW Southern Tag Team titles w/Shawn Spears defeating The Untouchables (December 20, 2006); OVW Heavyweight title defeating Paul Burchill (February 17, 2007); OVW (Ohio Valley Wrestling) Television title defeating Shawn Spears (July 6, 2007); (WWE) World Tag Team titles w/Hardcore Holly defeated Lance Cade & Trevor Murdoch (December 10, 2007); (WWE) World Tag Team titles w/Ted DiBiase Jr. defeated Batista & John Cena (August 11, 2008).
The "6" is also for the sixth man in basketball, who is a player that is not a starter but comes off the bench more often than other reserves, often being the first player to be substituted in. So he's going to take Randy Orton's place.
-- Ted DiBiase was wearing the number 4, like his four titles: Fusion Pro Tag Team titles w/Mike DiBiase defeating Raheem Rashaad & Juntsi (February 17, 2007); FCW Southern Heavyweight title defeating T.J. Wilson (December 18, 2007); WWE World Tag Team titles w/Cody Rhodes defeated Hardcore Holly & "Cody Rhodes" (June 29, 2008); WWE World Tag Team titles w/Cody Rhodes defeated Batista & John Cena (August 11, 2008).
In basketball, the number "4" is the power forward who plays a role similar to that of center in what is called the "post" or "low blocks." So he's like Randy Orton and does the same maneuvers.
