The following is Radican's "real-time" review of the EVOLVE 6 DVD from his live Twitter coverage. Follow Radican on Twitter @SeanRadican
Jimmy Jacobs promo starts the show. He says a win would put him on top of the heap. Drake Younger then is shown saying he could become the first man to go 4-0. Johnny Gargano is up next. He said he would knock Jacobs off the top of the wins list.
Taylor was shown sleeping backstage. Austin Aries was then shown arriving at the building. He kicked the refs out of the room.
1 -- DRAKE YOUNGER vs. SILAS YOUNG
Austin Aries and Lenny Leonard are the commentators. Silas dominated during the early going, but Younger fired back with a senton to the outside. Younger ended up catching Drake with a powerslam on the outside. Drake caught Younger with a half-Nelson suplex and both men were down. Younger the hit the headstand moonsault for the win. Good opener.
WINNER: Younger. Good back and forth action with the crowd into it. Younger kicked out of a sit-down slam. Young moves to 1-1. (**3/4)
2 -- RICH SWANN vs. A.R. FOX vs. TONY NESE vs. SCOTT REED -- Four-way match -- one win on the line
Crazy action early with no tags needed. Swann and Fox had a great exchange. Fox botched a kick flip off the apron. That looked like it sucked. Ouch. Fox managed to pick himself and land a legdrop off top to the apron on Swann as the crowd went nuts. Swann hit an insane series of moves, but Reed powerbombed him. Non-stop action in this one and the crowd loves it. Lot of pins broken up including Swann hitting the standing 450 on Fox. Fox finally got the win with an island driver variation on Reed.
WINNER: Fox. Fox moves to 1-0 with the win. (***1/4)
Younger was shown backstage selling frustration with his loss.
Larry Dallas came out with Reby Sky and a skanky-looking woman. They sat at a table at ringside.
3 -- BOBBY FISH vs. KYLE O'REILLY
O'Reilly won their previous match at Evolve 1. O'Relly and Fish went right at it exchanging strikes and kicks. O'Reilly got an ankle lock, but Fish escaped. They did some great MMA style exchanges on the mat and came to a stalemate. Fish blocked a couple of kicks and nailed O'Reilly with a kick to the back of the head. O'Reilly fired back, but was slow to capitalize. Fish fired back with a superplex off the top and both men were down.
After a big exchange of kicks and strikes both men went down after simultaneous kicks to the head. O'Reilly caught Fish in a triangle, but Fish nailed him witha powerbomb. O'Reilly applied it again, but Fish tossed him into the turnbuckle. Fish finally got his first win with a spinning heel kick to the back of the head.
Leonard interviewed Fish after the match. Fish said it felt awesome to win. O'Reilly then got on the mic and thanked Fish for the match. Fish said 2011 was looking good for him. He said it would be his year. He then gave a shout out to his daughters.
WINNER: Fish. Great post-match segment. (***1/2)
4 -- SUPER SMASH BROS. vs. UP IN SMOKE
Leonard is now along on commentary. Good action early with Uno running wild on Cheech. Super Smash Bros. continued to work well together while getting the heat on Cheech. Cheech fired back and went to work on Dos with Cloudy. Dos made the hot tag and Uno ran wild. The action broke down with everyone hitting moves and all four men were down.
All four men continued to go at it. Dos took down Up in Smoke with a moonsault kick and followed it up with a dive to the outside. Up In Smoke finally pinned Uno with a doublestomp into a code red combination for the win. Post-match: Leonard interviewed Up in Smoke. They said 2011 would be their year and they left to celebrate.
WINNERS: Up In Smoke. Up in Smoke moves to 4-0. (***1/4)
Fish was shown backstage. Reed came up and congratulated him on his win. He called his wife and said he had good news.
5 -- HOMICIDE vs. JON MOXLEY -- Relaxed Rules
The action spilled to the outside quickly. They brawled back into the ring where Moxley choked Homicide. Homicide fired back with the Three Amigos and the crowd applauded. Moxley targeted Homicide's shoulder and continued to work it over. Moxley taunted Homicide as he worked over his arm. Homicide fired back and choked Moxley in the bleacher section. Then, they did some crowd-brawling. Homicide tossed a chair into Moxley's head to break up a choke. They brawled into Dallas's VIP area. Mox tied up Homicide's arm in the ring barrier and hit it with a chair.
They finally ended up back inside the ring. Moxley got a chair and choked Homicide with the edge. Homicide tried to fire back, but got caught in an arm bar. Homicide went for the cop killa, but got caught in the chicken wing. The ref ended up calling for the bell when Homicide couldn't escape the hold.
Post-match: Homicide yelled at the ref after the match. He then kicked the ref. Moxley came back and taunted Homicide. Homicide laid him out with an Ace Crusher. Moxley continued to taunt Homicide, who got a fork and stabbed Moxley's forehead. Homicide told Mox to hit him, but Mox told him to go read the rulebook. He told Homicide that he hits like a girl. Mox sang at Homicide that he was a pussy. Homicide continued to attack Mox with the fork. Moxley gave Homicide a screwdriver to use. Moxley taunted him an said he'd never work in Evolve again.
Homicide got a ring bell and Moxley taunted him on the mic. He then mocked Homicide's entrance music. Homicide finally left and Moxley called him a quitter. He said Homicide would get a ribbon at the end of his career that said participant while he would win medals. Homicide came back and finally laid out Moxley with a Piledriver.
WINNER: Moxley. Moxley was awesome on the mic. The post-match stuff was about 100x better than the match. (**)
Taylor and Gargano were shown backstage. Gargano said he would take care of Jacobs. He told Taylor to take care of Aries. ... Aries was shown warming up backstage.
Next was promo time with Larry Dallas. Dallas said he was going to start sponsoring fighters. He told the unknown girl she was going to be a backstage interviewer. ... Reby Sky then heeled on the crowd before introducing Chuck Taylor into the new group. Taylor said he now had financial backing and he would beat Aries tonight. They then left the ring together. Dallas should have been given time to say a little more about why he's sponsoring fighters.
6 -- ADAM COLE vs. RICOCHET
Cole dominated the action early, as he was able to stay a step ahead of Ricochet. Crowd seemed dead after the Moxley-Homicide post-match encounter. Ricochet hit some nice moves, but the crowd was dead. Cole finally fired back with a big running kick and both men were down. Ricochet went for a springboard, but Cole countered it into a German. They traded several nearfalls. Cole locked in a second Boston crab. He then put his knee across Ricochet's back, but he got the ropes. Ricochet finally finished off Cole with a DVD into a sitout powerbomb.
WINNER: Ricochet. Ricochet improves to 3-2 with the win. This was good by the end, but dragged at times. (**3/4)
7 -- JOHNNY GARGANO vs. JIMMY JACOBS
Jacobs managed to dodge a dive to the outside from Gargano and he took control. Jacobs missed an elbow drop on the apron and Gargano nailed him with a dive through the ropes. Jacobs fired back and set up Gargano on the ring barrier before nailing him with a dive through the ropes. Both men ended up down in the crowd. Gargano fired back with an Ace Crusher and went to work on Jacobs. Both men went up top and battled using a railing to balance themselves. Jacobs ended up crotching Gargano before nailing him with a clothesline.
Gargano countered a spear from Jacobs into the end time. Gargano went for a dive a short time later, but Jacobs speared him through the ropes. Both men traded big moves and were down on the mat. Jacobs came off the top and nailed Gargano with the end time. Gargano ended up rolling through the contra code and pinning Jacobs for the win.
Post-match: Larry Dallas ran informs ring after and celebrated with Gargano. Dallas said Gargano was his second signing. Jacobs told Dallas to shut up. He asked Dallas who he was. Jacobs made fun of his VIP section. Jacobs told Dallas he doesn't belong in Evolve.
Dallas got on the mic and told Jacobs things were different now. He offered Jacobs a night with Sky. Jacobs got on the mic and said Sky was on the VD list. Sky couldn't be heard on the mic but she slapped Jacobs. Jacobs ended up spanking Sky while Dallas screamed to end the segment.
WINNER: Gargano. Gargano moves to 3-3 with the win. (***1/2)
Moxley was show backstage. He said he was indestructible. He then used a wrench to bend his fingers backwards.
8 -- AUSTIN ARIES vs. CHUCK TAYLOR
Aries looked ripped. Aries told Taylor he should go to the gym, so Taylor took him down with a big shoulder tackle. Aries fired back and did some one arm push-ups. Aries then took out Taylor with the HSM. Taylor got chopped several times so he grabbed a sweatshirt from a fan to cover up. Aries fired back, but Aries dropkicked his legs out from under him and continued working over Aries on the mat. Aries fired back and caught Taylor with an ace crusher off the top. Aries hit a nice missile dropkick, but Taylor got his boot up when Aries charged him in the corner. Taylor his two quebradas on Aries, but he kicked out. Taylor missed a 450, but rolled through and hit a dropkick in the corner. Aries fired back with a shinbreaker/belly-to-back combo. Aries then hit the brainbuster and applied the last chancery for the win.
Post-match: Aries got on the mic after the match. He said Taylor showed a lot of guts in the ring. He said Taylor has dislocated his shoulder. Aries said if Taylor would go a long way if he applied himself to wrestling once he was done with college.
WINNER: Aries. Aries goes to 1-0. (***3/4)
Homicide was shown backstage with Cole. He said his shoulder was banged up. Younger came into the picture and said it was a rough night. Younger went for a drink with Homicide and Cole said he didn't know if he belonged there. Young confronted Gargano about his drinking. He said drinking with Gargano had sent him off the wagon after the first Evolve. Young said he would take it out on Gargano in the ring.
OVERALL THOUGHTS (7.5): This was a solid show with a lot of good wrestling and storytelling. Recommended.
