DEROSENROLL BLOG: Buyer's Guide for $8 ROH DVDs - Evan Bourne before WWE run, A.J. Styles in ROH, Danielson vs. Nigel epic Mar 25, 2009 - 7:14:16 PM
PWTorch VIP members have first-look access to all of Torch VIP forum member Mike DeRosenroll's latest ROH nostalgia blogs in the newly upgraded VIP Forum. His blogs posted under the M2_Jay screenname are published first in the PWTorch VIP Forum, and DeRosenroll interacts with other VIP members and Torch staff and contributors in the blog comments area afterward. Some of DeRosenroll's blog entries will be exclusive to the VIP Forum.
ROH is having a 48-hour sale to clear out selected 2006 DVDs for the bargain basement price of $8. This is about as cheap as ROH DVDs get.
Although many of the best shows of 2006 are not included in this sale, you can't go wrong with any of the shows included in this sale for just $8. Even ROH B-shows almost always have a couple of strong matches at the top of the card to make them worth getting for this little money (and not all the shows in this sale are B-shows).
If you want to cherry-pick the best few shows included in this sale, here are my top picks:
(1) Unified (August 12, Liverpool, U.K.): I recommended this show in my picks from the $10 sale a couple of weeks ago. If you didn't get it then, now you have a chance to get it for $8. Do it! The main event World Title vs. Pure Title match between Bryan Danielson and Nigel McGuiness is incredible. The crowd heat for McGuiness in his home country is something to behold. This is the runaway best show included in this sale.
(2) Dragon Gate Challenge (March 30, Detroit): This was the first of three WrestleMania weekend shows in 2006. (This one was in Detroit, while the next two were in Chicago, which actually hosted WrestleMania that year). This card is not quite as great as the next night's show (Supercard of Honor - featuring the Match of the Year Dragon Gate six-man match), but it's still a great show and well worth $8. The Dragon Gate wrestlers who steal the show the next night are matched against various ROH wrestlers, making for a strong card from top to bottom.
(3) Hell Freezes Over (January 14, Philadelphia): This show started the great ROH-CZW feud, and is worth seeing for that plus the fantastic semi-main event between A.J. Styles and Matt Sydal (now Evan Bourne in WWE).
(4) Honor Reclaims Boston (November 3, Boston): So named because it was ROH's return to the Boston market after a long absence. If you like tag team wrestling, the main event featuring Austin Aries & Roderick Strong vs. KENTA & Davey Richards is not to be missed. The rest of the card is strong too.
If you love tag team wrestling: in addition to Honor Reclaims Boston above, get The Fourth Anniversary Show for the ROH Tag Team Title Match (Austin Aries & Roderick Strong defending against A.J. Styles & Matt Sydal) and Generation Now for the eight-man tag match (Generation Next vs. Irish Airborne, Jerrelle Clark, and Davey Richards).
If you love long, epic, singles matches: get Epic Encounter II and Gut Check. The undercard of Epic Encounter II is a bit weak, but the 2-out-of-3 falls World Title Match between Danielson and McGuiness is a great sequel to their classic in Liverpool at Unified. Gut Check is a stronger overall card than Epic Encounter II and the main event features Danielson and Colt Cabana in two-out-of-three falls.
If you love hardcore brawls: get Motor City Madness for The Briscoes vs. Homicide & Samoa Joe.
