RADICAN'S DVD REVIEW: Kayfabe delivers the laughs in bunches in new fake documentary on independent wrestling Mar 4, 2009 - 9:51:31 AM
If you've ever been to a small independent wrestling show, you will be able to relate to the humor of the recently released independent movie Kayfabe: A Fake Real Movie About A Fake Real Sport, which lampoons the world of independent wrestling in this fake documentary about a small independent fed called Tri-Cities International Championship Wrestling Federation (TCICWF).
The movie revolves around locker room leader Randy "The Rocket" Tyler, who at one point hilariously laments missing his chance to go to "the show" due missing a tryout. Of course, there's Steve Justice, the type of character you will find on just about any independent show who at one point made it to the big time and takes himself way too seriously and is looking for his one last shot at getting back to "the show."
The cast of characters in the locker room of the TCICWF all take themselves way too seriously, which provides for many laugh out loud moments during the movie, which has to be considered the Spinal Tap of wrestling movies.
It doesn't take long before TCICWF is set to close its doors for good, which leads to the hilarious "documentation" of the final shows of the promotions. I don't want to spoil much, but the second to last show is run at a Catholic school and features some seriously hilarious moments when the wrestlers manage to offend just about everyone in the building. The best part is that all of them are oblivious to just how offensive they are.
Each show is filmed for cable access with announcers doing the commentary, which can be heard during the movie. I couldn't help but laugh when I saw they were stationed at the altar during the second to last show held at the Catholic school.
The backstage moments are also a real treat as the wrestlers argue about their gimmicks, finishes, and go over spots for their upcoming matches. Another highlight of the movie takes place when color commentator and retired wrestler Macho Pain comes into the locker room and delivers an impassioned speech after hearing two of the wrestlers arguing about who is going to go over. Pain's speech about how wins and losses don't matter in wrestling is hilarious.
I highly recommend a purchase of the award-winning Kayfabe, especially for fans who know about the inner workings of pro wrestling that are lampooned over and over throughout the movie with just about every attempt at humor connecting with a laugh out loud moment. Mainstream wrestling fans might not get every attempt at humor, but chances are if you're reading this site and have ever seen the atmosphere at a small-time independent show, you'll watch this movie many times to catch all of the hilarious scenes. Heck, I've already watched it twice.
