Report by Dave Green, PWTorch correspondent
In the second of two jointly promoted shows, Revolution Pro Wrestling and New Japan Pro Wrestling presented Global Wars U.K., which took place at the Rivermead Leisure Complex in Reading. Not quite a sell-out, but a large crowd attended a show that was mainly made up of NJPW vs. RPW matches.
(1) Tetsuya Naito beat KUSHIDA and Martin Kirby in a triple threat match. This was a fun opener. Naito did not come out in his suit and mask as he did last night, but remained as heelish as ever, electing to stay outside for the opening portion while Kirby and KUSHIDA had some nice technical exchanges. Naito controlled a large portion of the match, but everyone got some nice moments in, including some brawling on the stage area. Eventually Kirby was taken out of the ring and Naito countered KUSHIDA's attempt at the spinning Hoverboard Lock with his own spinning DDT finisher named the Destino for the win. After the match, Naito choked Kirby with a t-shirt. Boo!
(2) Lord Gideon Grey (w/Rishi Ghosh) beat Gedo. Some great comedy from these guys. Grey and Ghosh are great over-the-top villains and got the better of Gedo throughout. Gedo came back with his Figure-Four leglock, but failed to get the submission and later couldn't lock in the Gedo Clutch. Ghosh caused a distraction leading to a low blow and schoolboy, but Gedo kicked out. However, behind the ref's back, Ghosh hit a reverse DDT and Grey locked in a double-arm-style Camel Clutch for the submission win.
(3) TenCozy (Satoshi Kojima & Hiroyoshi Tenzan) beat The Thrillers (Joel Redman & Mark Haskins) by pinfall.
Entertaining action from everyone involved. TenCozy started the match playing fair, but turned on the crowd by blindsiding the home team. This didn't make the crowd boo them for too long as Kojima was so funny with his bantering with the crowd, telling a gent in the audience "I don't understand you!" in very clear English. Really good back and forth action saw the Japanese team hit the Super Koji Cutter, followed by Kojima's Lariat on Redman for the pinfall.
(4) Shinsuke Nakamura beat Marty Scurll by pinfall. Great match here as expected. Plenty of strikes and submission attempts. Scurll spent a while working on Nakamura's arm, trying to soften him up for the Chicken Wing, which he did apply for a while. Nakamura countered several times into a cross arm-breaker. A desperation Boma-Ye resulted in a one count. Scurll fired up again after being hit by a second rope Boma-Ye, but got struck by a standing variation for the final three. A much better match than I am probably making out.
(5) Bullet Club (Doc Gallows & Karl Anderson) beat the Revolutionists (Sha Samuels & James Castle) via DQ. I thought this was the worst match of the weekend. This battle of tag champs was not very good at all. Gallows and Anderson really looked like they were going through the motions and Castle is still very new and isn't that great. Samuels did his best, but even he couldn't get me invested in this one. Bullet Club went for the Magic Killer, but Castle interfered with a blatant low blow and belt strike, resulting a DQ. An awful ending. Not a must-see, to say the very least.
(6) IWGP World Hvt. champion Kazuchika Okada defeated Will Ospreay. A total contrast here as this was match of the night. An incredible amount of chemistry between these two. Ospreay hit some great moves to take the champion by surprise, who himself kept the youngster grounded in front of hot and split crowd. Okada countered a springboard cutter into the Tombstone followed by a devastating Rainmaker for the win. This match is well with seeking out. This is the kind of match that makes me wish New Japan would stop putting such a divide between their heavyweights and juniors, as fresh and entertaining matches like this would be the result.
(7) Hiroshi Tanahashi beat Big Damo O'Connor by pinfall. Another great performance from Damo in the biggest weekend of his career so far. He dominated for a long portion of this one, but Tanahashi displayed some impressive power by slamming the monstrous Irishman and even suplexing him off the top rope. Damo hit the elevated reverse DDT I mentioned in the Uprising report from Friday. Tonight looked much safer, but they sold it much like last night. Still not sure if last night was a legit mistake, but Damo seems to have taken advantage of it with this apparently new killer move in his arsenal. It wasn't enough, as Tanahashi eventually hit the High Fly Flow for the win over the big man. He may have lost the two matches, but Damo has had a star making time of it this weekend.
(8) RPW British Hvt. Champion A.J. Styles defeated Jushin Thunder Liger to retain the British Hvt. Title. In a first-time-ever dream match, A.J. voluntarily elected to put the RPW title on the line, as "it's not every day you step in the ring with a legend." It's hard to believe that Liger is 50-years-old when you consider his performance in this. Both men were motivated and put on a great match. Liger actually hit a top rope Frankensteiner, but he nearly caught in a second rope Styles Clash when he attempted a second one. A.J. hit a Pelé kick, but Liger followed with the rolling Combo Kick immediately. Great dueling chants throughout the match, with a lot of love for Liger being he sentimental favourite. Liger hit the Liger Bomb for a close nearfall. Styles twice locked in the Calf Killer, but Liger made the ropes. Styles eventually caught Liger with the Styles Clash to retain.
A very nice and classy main event to end a good show. In all honesty, this wasn't as good a show as Uprising. The building doesn't convey the same type of atmosphere that Friday night's venue, York Hall, does and some of the guys must have been very tired from that show. This may have been better served as the warm-up for last night's show, but what's done is done. It was still a show worth going to, with only the Bullet Club match being the disappointment of the weekend. I recommend the readers to seek out Okada vs. Ospreay, Nakamura vs. Scurll, Tanahashi vs. Damo and the main event. The show will hopefully be available on RPWonDemand by the end of the week.
