Calgary, Alb., Canada
Report by Michael Gibbons, PWTorch correspondent

I was at the Calgary show Saturday night, and it was a good show! I would estimate about 80 percent of the lower bowl of the Saddledome was sold, with no one sitting in the second bowl or press level seats. I bought the cheapest tickets available ($25) and that gave me a great lower bowl seat, so I assume they higher seats were not made available.

Eden was the ring announcer for the night.

(1) Cesaro beat Luke Harper via pinfall. Cesaro came out first to a big pop to start the show, then Luke Harper came out by himself to his own theme music. Harper did some uncharacteristic playing to the crowd during the match such as flexing. The finish came when Harper tried his Discus Clothesline, which Cesaro countered and then hit the Neutralizer. This was a really good opening contest, I would like to see Cesaro join Ambrose and Reigns as the third guy opposite the Wyatts.

(2) R-Truth beat Bo Dallas via pinfall. Dallas gave one of his typical pre-match promos and Truth did his rap routine to the ring. The finish came when Truth tried a sunset flip, but Dallas blocked and pinned using the ropes, only for the ref to catch him. Truth then finished the sunset pin for the win.

(3) Natalya beat Alicia Fox via submission. Natalya got a big hometown pop and won via Sharpshooter. This was okay. It's a real shame that Natalya is being ignored with this so-called revolution story.

(4) WWE tag champions The New Day (Xavier Woods & Big E.) beat the Prime Time Players (Titus O'Neil & Darren Young) to retain the Tag Team Championship via pinfall. Kofi Kingston was not in attendance, which was disappointing as I would have liked to see the trio. New Day was really over, but the PTP did a good job of getting everyone on their side. Titus's hot tag and especially his bark taunt got a good reaction with the crowd. New Day won after some kind of distraction and roll-up.

Next was the WWE World & U.S. champion Seth Rollins on before intermission. Rollins cut some lame anti-Calgary/Bret Hart promo before the match.

(5) WWE World Hvt. & U.S. champion Seth Rollins beat Dean Ambrose via pinfall to retain the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. This was a really good house show title match, but followed the Rollins formula of great match, groan-inducing finish. The finish came when Rollins undid the top turnbuckle, the ref tried to tie it back on, but Rollins brought the WWE Title in the ring, which distracted the ref again. At this point there was a ref bump, Ambrose was sent into the exposed turnbuckle, and Seth nailed the Pedigree for the win.

After the match, Rollins came back to give Ambrose another Pedigree, but Ambrose gave him Dirty Deeds. Both guys were over huge and there were dueling chants during the match. I was curious why a World Title match was in the middle of the show, but this was obvious after the main event...

[Intermission]

(6) Curtis Axel & Damien Sandow beat The Ascension (Konnor & Viktor) via pinfall. The Ascension got no reaction, while Axel and Sandow no longer had their Mega-Powers gimmick and Sandow is back to wearing pink tights and purple knee pads. This was a quick match that ended with an Axel small package.

(7) Chris Jericho beat Kevin Owens via pinfall. Owens got a huge ovation when his music hit, but turned the crowd after a funny anti-Calgary promo, which was interrupted by Jericho getting the pop of the night. Jericho cut a promo that was entertaining until Jericho said Owens looks like "Grumpy Cat" and tried to start a "Grumpy Cat" chant, which I found pretty lame. This was a good match. During the ending, they tried a spot where Jericho "jumped out" of the Pop-up Powerbomb to hit a Codebreaker, but they botched the Codebreaker. Shortly after Owens missed a top-rope moonsault, Jericho hit the Codebreaker for the win.

(8) Roman Reigns beat Bray Wyatt via pinfall in a Street Fight. Both guys were over with the crowd and Reigns got a good pop, but even my friend who is a really casual fan said "there seems to be mixed emotions about this guy." Wyatt came to the ring alone, which telegraphed the finish. This was a decent brawl with a lot of weapons used. Wyatt gave Reigns a uranage through a table at one point for a two count and Reigns gave Wyatt a powerbomb through a table. After the powerbomb the lights went out, Braun Strowman was in the ring when they came back on, shortly after Ambrose's music hit and he came to the ring. Reigns won with a spear quickly after all of this. Luke Harper was nowhere to be found and didn't have anything to do with the Wyatt Family during the show.

Ambrose and Reigns celebrated with fans ringside to end the show.

Overall, I had a great time and got my money's worth. I will say this though: Roman Reigns has a long way to go as a singles act. Even in-person when he isn't doing a signature move or aligned with Ambrose he just isn't interesting. I find it hard to feel sympathy when he sells and other than the comebacks I can't get behind his offense.
