Beyond Wrestling “Feeding Frenzy” report
February 16, 2014
Providence, R.I. at Fete Music
Report by Sean Radican, PWTorch columnist

The show was delayed when the ring broke right before the doors were set to open. Luckily Beyond Wrestling owner Drew Cordeiro was able to get another ring, but the show didn’t start until almost two hours after the scheduled opening bell time.

Beyond Wrestling has a special and unique atmosphere at Fete Music. The wrestlers are accessible and often stand at ringside during matches. The fans didn’t seem upset at all about the delay, which speaks to the bond that Beyond Wrestling has with the fans in Providence, Rhode Island.

During the delay, Sugar Dunkerton came out and instructed the fans to stand around and make a human ring. He asked four tall individuals to serve as ring posts. He then proceeded to have a match with Eric Corvis.

(a) Sugar Dunkerton beat Eric Corvis. This was a lot of fun. The fans were into the impromptu match, which was wrestled at a very slow pace at times, which was smart given that Corvis and Dunkerton were wrestling on concrete. At one point, Corvis hit an assisted diving headbutt off of one of the human ring posts. Dunkerton eventually won with a diving clothesline.

(1) Buxx Belmar beat Davey Vega and Danny Cannon and Matt Cage in Four-Way match. This was one of it not the best match of the night. It was a blast to see Vega and Cage live, as I had only seen them on DVD before and I had no idea they were going to be on the show. I’m familiar with their work from watching AAW and AIW releases. Danny Cannon was the star of the match. He set the crowd on fire after climbing the big post that was next to the ring and hitting a moonsault to the floor. Belmar won the match with a Falcon Arrow on Cannon.

(2) Kimber Lee beat Chuck Taylor, who filled the open contract. Taylor was the first surprise name to appear on the card and he got a big reaction coming out. Taylor had some funny lines while getting in offense on Lee. At one point he hit a kick to the stomach and told the crowd the move was called the abortion kick. Lee won with an arm bar, which she never set up with any previous submission work during the match. This was fine for what it was.

(3) EYFBO & M1nute Men & Fear & Loathing In New England & Da Hoodz beat Whaling City Wrecking Crew & Crusade For Change & Tabarnark De Team & Devastation Corporation in a Feeding Frenzy match. The rules of the match were a team was eliminated if one member of one of the tag teams was pinned or submitted. The action was hot and heavy during the first part of the match. At one point, T.J. Marconi took an 8 way superkick from all of his opponents, which got a big pop. Marconi’s partner, Darius Carter, drew the ire of his teammates, when he began stealing pins to eliminate members of the other team. The match dragged a bit until it came down to Cole & Epic vs. Tabernark De Team. They had some good exchanges until Cole & Epic got a double pin for the win.

After the match Sugar Dunkerton and Pinkie Sanchez entered the ring and said they wanted to form a new version of the KOA with Epic and Cole. Dunkerton & Epic had been regular tag partners until Dunkerton began missing shows. Epic told Dunkerton it was time for them to go their separate ways and bailed.

(4) Shynron beat A.R. Fox to become the new Champion of Chile. This was the high-flying affair that I expected. These two had a crazy match, which was one of the better matches on the card. There was lot of high-flying throughout the match. Down the stretch, there were a ton of nearfalls and Shynron even kicked out of the Lo Mein pain from Fox at one point. Shynron eventually won with a small package in a really fun match. Fox and Shynron were both trained by Mr. Hughes. It amazes me that Mr. Hughes has turned out so many innovative high flyers out of his wrestling school. The crowd seemed genuinely surprised to see the title switch. I wasn’t a fan of the rollup finish after both guys kicked out of a ton of big maneuvers down the stretch, but overall this was really good.

Fox tried to attach the ref after the match, but the ref tossed him out of the ring. The post-match angle didn’t make any sense to me.

I’m not sure if the show went to intermission after this match or the next one, but the crowd visibly thinned out during the second half of the show. It was a long night for everyone given the delay with the ring truck.

(5) Myke Quest (w/Nicholas Kaye) beat Anthony Stone. The crowd didn’t seem to be into this match outside of heckling Quest with “Paula Dean Ambrose” chants and humming the Shield theme throughout the match. Stone handcuffed Kaye to the ropes before the match. Kaye and Stone have been feuding since Beyond Wrestling’s first show at Fete Music. Late in the match, Kaye managed to get out of the handcuffs. He distracted Stone long enough for Quest to nail him with a spinebuster, which was good for the win.

Kaye and Quest beat down Stone after the match. Kaye told Stone he was proud of him and said they would end their feud in a No Rules tag match at the next show. Kaye told Stone he could choose any partner he wanted. Stone chose CZW’s Matt Tremont as his partner against Quest and Kaye at the next show on March 23.

(6) Juicy Product (J.T. Dunn & David Starr) beat The Hooligans (Devin Cutter & Mason Cutter). The match got off to a very basic start and I was surprised given that I expected The Hooligans to set the crowd on fire right away. The action eventually picked up and the match got really good down the stretch. Mason hit several impressive high-flying maneuvers that popped the crowd. One of the Hooligans ended up draped on the stage. Starr held the other Hooligan on his back and Dunn got a running start and jumped off the apron and then off his back before hitting a leg drop onto the other Hooligan on the stage. The crowd went nuts and Dunn took a long time to recover as it appeared he had hurt himself crashing into the front of the VIP seating area. Dunn ended up pinning Mason with a rolling elbow and Mason’s ear was bloody after the match.

(7) Michael Elgin & Tomasso Ciampa beat The Doom Patrol (Chris Dickinson & Jaka) via DQ. The story of the match is that Dickinson has been feuding with the ROH talent that Beyond Wrestling has been using at their big shows at Fete Music because he believes they’re stealing spots on the shows. The match started off slow and the crowd wasn’t into it. Elgin did his signature delayed vertical suplex spot on Dickinson. Jaka tried to kick Elgin, but Elgin held on and Ciampa eventually wiped out Jaka. Elgin then did a long delayed vertical suplex that got a big pop from the fans. Later in the match, Dickinson mocked Elgin and hit a long delayed vertical suplex on Ciampa. The match was just getting really good and there was a big sequence between all four men that popped the crowd. Elgin was setting up for his finish on Jaka when a masked man grabbed his leg. The masked man eventually ran into the ring and caused a DQ. The man unmasked and revealed himself to be Jimmy Jacobs, which got a big response from the crowd. Jacobs cut a promo explaining why he had aligned with Doom Patrol. I can’t remember exactly what he said, but it was something along the lines of him always being an outcast in ROH, so he was aligning himself with Dickinson & Jaka.

Dickinson cut a promo and said he was sick of guys stealing pay days from people in Beyond Wrestling. Jacobs said there are no rules for him in Beyond. Eric Corvis took exception to Dickinson’s comments and said Beyond Wrestling was for everyone. Corvis eventually began brawling with Dickinson. He got the upper hand on Jacobs, but Jaka and Dickinson cut him off. Jacobs then nailed Corvis with his spike. Corvis took forever to blade, which drew some mocking chants from the crowd.

(8) CZW Tag Team Champions The Beaver Boys (John Silver & Alex Reynolds) beat Team Tremendous (Bill Carr & Dan Barry) to retain the CZW Tag Titles. This was another very good match on the card, but the crowd was a bit burned out and it didn’t have the atmosphere it might have had if there hadn’t been a delay at the beginning of the show. Carr & Barry did some comedy during the early parts of the match. I really enjoy the good cop, bad cop spot they do where they interrogate their opponent. This time, Reynolds suffered the wrath of Carr, who plays the role of the bad cop. Carr asked Reynolds, “What did you do with that little girl?” He then pummeled Reynolds with clotheslines in the corner. The highlight of the match was Silver kicking out of a combination of moves from Carr & Barry at one. He then ran wild on both men while screaming and the fans really got into the action at this point. Silver is a ton of fun to watch if you haven’t checked out his work recently. Silver & Reynolds eventually got the pin on Barry with the SOS.

After the match, CZW's D.J. Hyde cut a promo running down Carr & Barry. He told Reynolds & Silver they could leave. He then tried to big league Carr & Barry. Hyde got into it with the crowd and told them to suck his d--- and made some momma jokes before announcing CZW would be coming to Fete music in April. This wasn’t the best way to get people excited about CZW coming to town. Sozio then came out and laid out Carr and Barry. Sozio’s run-in was a bit sloppy and the fans weren’t into the post-match angle.

(9) Johnny Cockstrong vs. SeXXy Eddy in a Battle of the Bulges match went to a no-contest. The interaction between Cockstrong and Eddy was hilarious. They led the fans in several penis related chants during the early part of the match. Eddy’s skimpy tights were very revealing and they did a lot of spots revolving around the groin area. Both men went for low blows at different points in the match and ended up selling their arms because their groins are made of steel. The Wingmen eventually interrupted and there was an impromptu tag match.

(10) Johnny Cockstrong &SeXXXy Eddy beat The Wingmen (Gregory Edwards & Mark Shurman with a double pin. The hilarity continued as Eddy and Cockstrong stood over Shurman and grinded their nether regions into his face. The crowd then chanted “dicks 2 faces.” Words can't describe (or I choose not to describe) what I saw in this match, but Cockstrong & Eddy picked up the win with a double pin.

J.T. Dunn came out a cut a promo. He said Beyond Wrestling had given him a big opportunity and had become his home. He announced he would be wrestling Chris Hero at Beyond Wrestling on March 23. The crowd popped big for his announcement.

(10) Drew Gulak beat Kevin Steen. This was a good match, but the crowd was totally burned out by the time the main event rolled around. Steen kept getting rope breaks when Gulak would go for submissions during the early stages of the match. Gulak finally got frustrated and nailed Steen with a big slap to the face. The action picked up from there and they had a good physical match mixed with some technical wrestling. Gulak kept going for the ankle lock down the stretch, but Steen managed to get the ropes each time. Gulak finally countered a sharp-shooter from Steen and submitted him with a grapevine anklelock to win the match.

There was a big brawl at the end with Jaka, Jacobs, and Dickinson, attacking Gulak and Steen. Elgin and Ciampa then ran out to even the odds. Gulak and Ciampa went at it and were separated by several wrestlers.

Ciampa challenged Gulak to a submission match next month, but Gulak wanted to do it right now. Steen yelled at Ciampa and Gulak to stop it. Steen said he had to save Ciampa's job in PWG. Steen gave up and left the ring and another brawl broke out. Steen sold his leg leaving the ring. Gulak and Ciampa continued to go out each other despite being separated multiple times and I had to leave. For all I know, they’re still going at it.

Overall thoughts: This show wasn’t as good as “Americanrana”, which was the last Beyond Wrestling show I attended live at Fete Music. The delay because of the ring breaking hurt the show, as the crowd tired during the second half of the show. That being said, there were more than enough quality matches up and down the card to make this worth purchasing when it comes out on VOD, despite there being no blow-away matches on the card.

The atmosphere at a live Beyond Wrestling show is unlike any other independent wrestling show I’ve attended. The crowd really supports the company and it showed during the delay as people waited for a new ring to arrive. Nobody was upset and the fans seemed to just take in the atmosphere and interact with each other and other wrestlers.

The opening Four-way match was the best match on the show. Danny Cannon established himself as someone to keep an eye on in 2014. He reminds me a lot of Davey Richards with his stiff offense and kicks, but what people will remember about him is his insane moonsault from the top of the pole near the ring to the floor. It was an insane spot that popped the crowd huge.

The show was full of surprises, as wrestlers like Davey Vega, Matt Cage, Chuck Taylor, and Jimmy Jacobs all appeared unannounced. Beyond Wrestling features a mix of talent that you won’t see anywhere else under one roof. I really enjoyed getting a chance to see all of the wrestlers that I watch from different companies alongside the regular Beyond Wrestling talent perform under one roof.

Beyond Wrestling is starting to showcase more storylines and angles. There was a lot of setup on this show for the March 23 through various promo segments and angles, which all unfolded in front of the crowd. It is fun to watch the company evolve as it grows. Beyond Wrestling’s next show “Critical Acclaim” on March 23 is shaping up to be a loaded card with Chris Hero vs. J.T. Dunn and Drew Gulak vs. Tomasso Ciampa already announced for the card.

My one complaint is that the length of the show needs to be toned down a bit. Beyond Wrestling shows at Fete Music regularly run around four hours or so. Between the delay in the ring and the intermission in the middle of the show, people were at this show for around 7 hours or so depending on what time they arrived at the building. The crowd visibly thinned out during the second half of the show.

That being said, if you have a chance to attend a Beyond Wrestling show at Fete Music, I highly recommend going to a show if your anywhere near Providence, RI. The atmosphere for the shows is amazing and the company features a great variety of talent. I was exhausted by the time the show ended, but overall I had a great time.
