Report by Bobby H., PWTorch correspondent
I bought tickets at the last minute, not knowing anything about the billing. I discovered that this was definitely the "B-Show" for the day, not that there were no stars. The crowd was enthusiastic. The arena was about 65 percent full.
(1) Justin Gabriel beat Damien Sandow with the 450 splash on the second attempt, after getting crotched by Sandow on the top ropes during the first.
(2) The Great Khali beat Jinder Mahal. Lots of love from the kids (including my son) for the Punjabi Playboy, who put on, umm, quite a clinic of skillful chops and slaps. The usual ending with a Brain Chop.
(3) Divas champion A.J. Lee (w/Tamina Snuka) beat Alicia Fox with the Black Widow. A.J. won after applying her finisher the second time a few moments after the first when the hold fell apart as Alicia fell to one knee.
(4) Dolph Ziggler beat Big E. Langston in a Street Fight (as chosen by the crowd over 2/3 Falls). The voting started early in the show. Right before the match, Vickie Guerrero came out, only to be practically booed out of the arena as she announced the stipulation; she could hardly be heard. During the match, a kendo stick and chair became involved. At one point, Dolph wedged a chair between the ropes and ended up eating it head-first. Early on, Big E. told the booing crowd that if they didn't shut up, he was leaving. That got him nowhere, so he walked back up the ramp to leave and Ziggler caught up to him near the production area and dragged/beat him back to the ring. A high point in the back-and-forth was both of them grabbing a drink from a fan and throwing the contents into the other's face. Back in the ring, Ziggler won with the Zig-Zag.
(5) The Prime Time Players beat Heath Slater & Drew McIntyre when Titus O'Neil hit Slater with the Clash of the Titus. I was interested to see how the crowd was going to react to Darren Young after the news of-late, but it was all love from the fans, and big cheers for the PTPs.
(6) The Wyatt Family beat R-Truth & The Usos. Bray Wyatt sat out much of the match in a rocking chair on the entrance ramp until entering the ring to finish-off Truth with Sister Abigail.
The Main Event was Alberto Del Rio vs. Rob Van Dam for the World Title. Before entering the ring, Del Rio tore up a young boy's "RVD" sign at ringside, to the visible distress of the kid. Shortly after the match started, RVD left the ring to high-five the boy, which helped the kid's mood greatly. RVD was the star of the night, by far. Of note, he was wearing a singlet with "I'm Over" airbrushed on the lower back. Del Rio got nowhere with the crowd with his mock A-D-R shoulder-pointing, to his anger and dismay.
(7) Rob Van Dam beat World Hvt. champion Alberto Del Rio via DQ; Del Rio retained the World Title. At the end of the match, Del Rio hit RVD with the Heavyweight belt and got DQ'd, which threatened to bring the night to an anticlimactic end. However, RVD recovered and hit Del Rio with a throat-kick, followed by the Five-Star Frogsplash.
It got better, as Sandow then ran in with the MITB briefcase. As he approached the laid-out Del Rio, he got his own throat-kick and Five-Star Frogsplash from RVD. The crowd erupted and that was it for the evening, except for RVD celebrating with the crowd ringside and along and around the entrance ramp.
It was a B-Show total talent-wise, and no "jump out of your seat" moments, but enjoyable.
