Wilkes-Barre, Pa.
Report by Jack Hale, PWTorch reader
I just came back from TNA's live event at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Wilkes-Barre. It was the second time for TNA to come to the arena and it seemed that around 1,000 were in attendance. While the show wasn't advertised much on TV, some parts of the Wilkes-Barre area were devastated by all-time-record flood damage. That may have had an effect on the turnout.
The pre-show meet-and-greet started a little late, but had Kendrick, Hernandez, Anarquia, Winter, Devon, Robbie E., Aries, and Gunner signing items around ringside and Anderson signing at the merch table. They were also selling Jarrett guitars and Hardy diecast trucks, which allowed fans into private meet and greets. Jeremy Borash did the announcing with Earl and Brian Hebner the referees. Due to family reasons, Don West wasn't here.
(1) X Division champion Austin Aries beat Brian Kendrick and Robbie E. in a three-way match to retain the X Division Title. The match started with Robbie E. fist-pumping to his music. Aries then danced to show his superior dance skills, then Kendrick started dancing before Aries attacked him. The beginning of the match had Aries beating down Robbie while keeping Kendrick out of the ring. Eventually, Kendrick got in and started taking over before hitting Robbie with the Sliced Bread #2. Aries then dumped Kendrick out of the ring and pinned Robbie to win.
(2) James Storm beat Gunner. Earl Hebner came out and did his usual routine, including drinking the last of Storm's beer. They had a methodical match until Gunner took over for a while. He got cocky and starting taunting and insulting Storm, so Storm surprised him with the Last Call Superkick to win.
(3) TNA Knockouts champion Winter beat Mickie James to retain the Knockouts Title. Mickie was very over, which was either because of her WWE fame or the Daisy Dukes Hardcore Country look she had. They had a good match that ended when Winter rolled up Mickie after a missed top rope move and held the ropes to win.
(4) Bobby Roode beat Bully Ray with Roode's #1 contender status on the line. Ray got some big heat by tearing up a little girl's Beer Money sign and by calling the crowd a bunch of hicks compared to New York City. A hard-hitting match that had plenty of false finishes. The match ended after Ray attempted to hit Roode with his chain, only to find himself in the Crippler Crossface and Ray tapped.
[Intermission had a meet and greet with Kurt Angle, Jeff Hardy, and Beer Money signing and doing pictures backstage. Mickie James, Earl, and Brian Hebner signed at the merch tables. All of them were really cool.]
(5) TNA tag champions Mexican America (Hernandez & Anarquia) beat "The Pope" D'Angelo Dinero & Devon to retain the TNA Tag Titles. The match began with Pope and Devon clocking Hernandez and Anarquia with drinks at ringside. When they got into the ring, Devon played the face in peril. Pope took the hot tag and got Anarquia into a small package, but Hernandez turned the small package over and defended Devon, which allowed Mexican America to keep their titles.
(6) Jeff Hardy beat Jeff Jarrett. Hardy came out and started a promo about trying to earn respect and forgiveness. Jarrett interrupted, dragging Earl to the ring with him. Jarrett says that only his forgiveness matters and Hardy can't have it. He challenged Hardy to a match and dominated most of the match. Hardy was able to win when he reversed Jarrett's Stroke into a Twist of Fate and then hit the Swanton Bomb to win.
(7) TNA World champion Kurt Angle beat Mr. Anderson to retain the TNA World Title. Both men were over. Since Angle is from Pennsylvania, he got cheered a good amount, not that Kurt played much of a heel. A very good match that had both men getting false finishes. The finish was Angle using Brian Hebner as a shield against an Anderson attack and kicking Anderson in the groin during the confusion, following with a Angle Slam to win.
After the show, Kurt Angle did the in-ring photo opportunity with the TNA World Title, while The Pope signed at the merch table. It was a good, enjoyable show even with shortened matched. It seemed that due to TNA working seven days in a row, the roster worked quicker matches than usual, but their evening was a really good one.
