WWE Smackdown brand house show results
August 28, 2010
Bethlehem, Pa.
Report by Mark Shipps, PWTorch Reader
(1) Kozlov & Santino Marella beat Curt Hawkins & Vance Archer in 8:00. Back and forth match that the crowd got into right away. Santino eventually got worked over for a while and made the hot tag to Kozlov, who cleared house. Santino made a blind tag back into the match and delivered the Cobra Strike punch for the pinfall victory.
After the match, Alberto Del Rio attacked both Kozlov and Santino, and then cut a promo on Rey Mysterio. He bragged that he put him out and that Chavo Guerrero would be next on his list if he had the courage to fight him later. Big heat for Del Rio.
(2) Christian beat Tyler Reks in 12:00. Reks came out first to virtually no reaction, and the crowd popped huge for Christian. There was a funny bit at the beginning with Christian getting cheered and having the crowd in the palm of his hand. He would raise his hand and people would cheer and then point at Tyler and the crowd would boo. Christian then went over to referee Jack Doane and raised his hand and people cheered. He pointed at Reks again and everyone would boo again. Reks actually controlled most of the match and Christian hit the Killswitch out of nowhere for the pin.
(3) Women's champion Layla beat Kelly Kelly to retain the Women's title in 6:00. The crowd was behind Kelly Kelly, but she did not look good at this event in terms of her wrestling. She blew a couple of spots and eventually tried a sunset flip out of the corner and Layla just sat down and hooked her legs for the quick pin.
(4) Great Khali beat The Dudebusters (Trent Barreta & Caylen Croft) in a handicap match in 7:00. Khali got a decent ovation and I laughed at the Dudebusters the whole time they were out there. Each sold not wanting to be in the match. The end saw Khali deliver two of his chops to Croft and Barreta before pinning Croft. The Dudebusters hugged afterward and stumbled to the back.
There was an intermission here.
C.M. Punk came out next and Tony Chimel announced him from Chicago, Illinois, home of the Blackhawks, who defeated the Philadelphia Flyers. This drew zero response from the crowd, surprisingly. Punk was over huge as a heel, though, and cut about a five-minute promo saying the last time he was in Bethlehem, the people went crazy for him, but now they boo him. He said not much has really changed in two years. He was still straight-edge even then, and the people of Bethlehem are the same horrible ugly people they were two years ago. He mocked MVP for a minute and told everyone he was better than them before MVP made his way out. It seemed like they were stalling for time so that people could get back to their seats as Punk played to the crowd by stealing Tony Chimel's microphone and dragging it across the ring and tying it to the post on the opposite side. MVP cut a short promo saying that in 2007 he was saying 'He was better than people' and that Punk stole his catchphrase. Punk continued to stall, which caused MVP to get angry and MVP slapped him. Punk then said the funniest thing of the night by announcing that he wanted MVP disqualified for hitting him before the bell and he wanted an entire side of the audience thrown out of the building. Finally, he got into the ring and the match started.
(5) C.M. Punk beat MVP in 14:00. The match was back and forth with MVP getting a ton of nearfalls. The end came when Punk delivered the Go To Sleep on MVP for the pinfall. Punk celebrated by just leaving.
(6) Alberto Del Rio beat Chavo Guerrero in 9:00 via submission with the armbar hold. Chavo was over with the crowd and hit the Frog Splash, but Del Rio grabbed the bottom rope with his hand right before the three count. Good match that showed me that Del Rio might actually do well in WWE.
There was another brief intermission while the cage was set up. Jack Doane assembled the cage by himself virtually and Tony Chimel pretended to help at one point. Mike Chiota watched from the entrance ramp and was laughing, which I thought was funny. Doane and Chiota were the only two referees there, which I figured would happen because of how split the talent was having three shows in one day.
(7) World Hvt. champion Kane beat Big Show in 7:00 in a steel cage match to retain the World Hvt. Title. It was announced that the match could only be won by pinfall or submission. Extremely short match for these two, but what else could have anyone expected? The end came with Big Show getting the upper hand and C.M. Punk snuck back out to ringside and opened the cage door and slid a steel chair into the ring for Kane to use. He hit a horrible-looking DDT onto the chair, missing by several feet, and covered Show for the pin.
After the match, Punk ran victory laps around the ring, which was hilarious. He got into the ring after Kane exited. Punk picked up the steel chair and, as Show got up, hit him in the back with it. Big Show no-sold the shot and knocked the chair out of Punk's hands. Punk tried to escape, but Show caught him. Show then knocked Punk out with a wind-up KO punch. Show celebrated with the crowd by signing autographs while a sole spotlight shined on Punk, who remained motionless in the center of the ring for a good ten minutes after Show left.
Overall, a decent house show that made me think back to older shows from the mid-'90s in the Bushkill, Pa. area at Fernwood Resort back when they had shows. The place was definitely not full, but the crowd that was in attendance was really into it. No announced return date. When on our way out, it was funny to see Layla and Kelly Kelly get into the same car and leave together. They did stop momentarily and sign autographs for a few lucky fans before leaving, though.
Biggest Pops:
(1) Christian
(2) Jack Doane
(3) Kelly Kelly/Big Show (tie)
Biggest Heat:
(1) C.M. Punk
(2) Kane
(3) Tyler Reks/Del Rio (tie)
