Ring of Honor show report
March 19, 2010
Dearborn, Mich.
Report by Fred Vall, Torch reader
The card was held at the Ford Community and Performing Arts Center, which made for an interesting comparison, as fans lining up to get into the Ring of Honor event mingled with music lovers lining up to see the Dearbon Symphony perform it's Spring Concert. I don't know what the house was for the Symphony, but about 1,000 fans attended ROH. They were treated to a spectacular night of wrestling.
We arrived as a dark match had just concluded with the Bravado Brothers winning. In the next dark match, Bobby Dempsey defeated Eddie Venom (guess who the heel was!) Venom got in plenty of offense before falling victim to a Fireman's Carry driver. The crowd was already red hot.
Fight Network was there filming and they encouraged us all to get into the action. Then, the official card started.
(1) "Skullcrusher" Rasche Brown beat Rhett Titus. The crowd chanted, "You're a virgin" at Titus, alternating with "hep-a-titis." Brown won with a standing backbreaker turned into a face slam.
(2) Kenny King beat Tyson Dux. King came out wearing a suit and was clearly the heel. The crowd was pretty well split between the two. King eventually won with a pin, but my view was blocked at the critical moment, so I missed the winning move.
(3) Kevin Steen & Steve Corino beat Player Dos & Pee Wee. Dos was knocked out of the ring early on, allowing the heels to deliver a prolonged beat down on Pee Wee. Dos eventually entered the ring to save his partner. This was another spirited contest, eventually won by Corino and Steen.
(4) Austin Aries beat Petey Williams. The crowd was again split between the two. Austin got a chant of "where's your title?" and Williams was treated to "you got fired!" Austin berated the crowd for disrespecting the "greatest man in the world" (him). The match itself started strong, but seemed to unravel a bit towards the end, as if they were struggling with how to take the match home. Williams hit a terrific-looking codebreaker, but Aries got the win. The crowd was red hot by this point - just in time for intermission.
After the break, they came back with Colt Cabana and El Generico in tag action against the House of Truth.
(5) Colt Cabana & El Generico beat the House of Truth. Cabana was way over with the crowd. The match itself was a solid tag bout with lots of high-flying action. Cabana used a cradle piledriver to score the win for his team.
(6) Roderick Strong beat Kenny Omega in a Pick 6 Challenge match. It was an old-school "scientific" match. Strong beat Omega with a roundhouse kick and press. There was lots of mat work and nearfalls in this one with the issue in doubt right until the end.
(7) ROH World champion Tyler Black & ROH World tag champions The Briscoes (Jay & Mark Briscoe) beat Chris Hero & The American Wolves (Davey Richards & Eddie Edwards) in a six-man tag main event. This was one of the best matches I have ever seen with spectacular moves in and out of the ring. The match was over 30 minutes long and was a textbook example of story-telling in the ring. The crowd mixed chants of "This is awesome!" with "R-O-H."
Black was on the receiving end of much of the heel team's wrath. At one point, Davey Richards taunted the crowd by saying, "This is your World champion getting his ass kicked," at which point Black began his comeback before tagging in one of the Briscoes. After another burst of action, the Briscoes used the "Tower of Doom" to pick up the win and send everyone home happy (and hoarse).
