Pro Wrestling Guerrilla "Threemendous II" show report
July 31, 2009
Reseda, Calif.
Report by Matt Massingham, Torch PWG correspondent
So-Cal's favorite Indy Fed had another night of action with some great technical wrestling, hard-hitting action, and a BRUTAL Guerrilla Warfare match .
The night started with PWG Commissioner Excalibur welcoming the crowd to the show and thanking the fans for six years of support. He then says in the grand style of PWG the opening contests are being combined and we are getting the return of the PWG SIX MAN TAG.
(1) The Cutler Brothers & Charles Mercury beat Jerome "LTP" Robinson & Brandon "Nitro" Gatson & Johnny Goodtime. This was your typical PWG six-man tag with very few tags between either team and the typical set of suicide dives that were capped off by Gatson, who executed a cartwheel and then a spinning senton to his opponents on the floor. Once we settle down, the Cutlers hit a chest-first lungblower on LTP only for a two count. LTP would then fall to a Spike Tombstone giving the Cutlers and Charles the win.
After the match, Excalibur took the house mic and told the crowd to give every man in the ring a standing ovation, which they did and led to a PWG chant.
(2) Alex Shelley beat "The Professional" Scott Lost. This was a match that I was looking forward to seeing especially since Scott was booked to defeat El Generico last month. A very nice technical bout which saw Scott try to out-wrestle Shelley early on, only for Alex to focus his attack on Scott's arm trying to take away one of his finishers the Sharpshooter. Scott looked for "The Big Fat Kill" on a number of occasions, but Shelley had him scouted and nailed two frog splashes to get the hard-fought win.
(3) "American Dragon" Bryan Danielson beat Chris Sabin. Before the match began, Sabin acknowledged that Danielson came out to the theme of the Detroit Pistons, but he admitted that it was still a pretty cool entrance. Early on, Sabin was out-wrestling the "Best Wrestler in the World" and laid in a few chops that only seemed to anger Danielson. Dragon fired up and we had a mid-ring exchange of chops and kicks until Danielson went on the attack. Dragon managed to lock in Cattle Mutilation, but Sabin rolled over only to suffer a series of elbows to the head. He had no choice but to tap out to the Cattle Mutilation giving Danielson the win.
(4) Chuck Taylor beat Colt "Boom Boom" Cabana. Early on, Cabana tried grabbing Chuck by the backside which did sit well with Chuck. Chuck went for his patented grenade, but Cabana knocked it away which only seemed to anger Taylor. Cabana then went on the attack but was sent to the floor and tried to sunset flip his way back in but Taylor dropped down and held the ropes giving him the questionable win.
After intermission, Excalibur returned to the ring and announced that on August 28, PWG will return to Reseda with the return of Brian Kendrick. But that wasn't all. Just one week later on September 4, the stars of Dragon Gate will be returning with SHINGO, Naruki Doi, and CIMA.
(5) Roderick Strong beat Davey Richards. This was the hardest hitting match of the night. The first few minutes had some GREAT wrestling by both men and some brutal kicks and chops being exchanged by both men. Roderick worked over the back with his trademark backbreakers and some BRUTAL chops, but Davey answered with some HARD kicks to the chest and head of his former No Remorse Corp. leader. Finally, Roderick hit a booming Yakuza and then a pair of Tiger Drivers to put away Davey.
After the match, Roderick grabbed the mic and acknowledged the crowd's chant of "This is Wrestling." He thanked the fans and said he loved them.
(6) "2 Skinny Black Guys" The Human Tornado & El Generico beat the PWG World Tag Team Champions Nick & Matt Jackson "The Young Bucks" in a Non-Title Match. This is when the show took a major turn. Before the Bucks even came through the curtain, the crowd was already voicing their displeasure towards the Bucks and once they came out, they were BOO'ED by a large number of the crowd. Once we get started, the Bucks started working as the heels since it was pretty clear everyone in the audience was rooting for Generico/Tornado. After the Bucks failed to finish off Tornado with "More Bang For Your Buck," Generico made the save and hit a Yakuza on Nick. Tornado hit D.N.D on Matt allowing Generico to hit the top turnbuckle Brainbustaaa for the win.
After the match, Matt took the mic and said 2SBG just beat the hottest tag team in all of wrestling and challenged 2SBGs to a re-match at the next show but with the PWG Tag Titles on the line. Generico took the mic and responded with "Si" and then a hand shake sealed the deal.
Suddenly, Chuck Taylor ran in from the Commentary Table and hit the "Awful Waffle" on Generico and said if his thought they're issue was over he was wrong. Taylor said his partner Kenny Omega was in Japan but he challenged Generico to a Singles Match at the next show with the winner getting the PWG Tag Team Title shot down the line. After Taylor cleared the ring and Tornado came back out wondering what happened, Generico took the mic and yelled "TAYLOR!" "PUTO!"
(7) PWG World champion Chris Hero beat Joey Ryan in a Guerrilla Warfare match to retain the PWG Title. The next shocking part of the evening took place when Joey's music hit and the crowd went NUTS! Joey Ryan, of all people, was getting CHEERED by most of the crowd who wanted to see him take the belt off Hero. Early on, we got your usual wrestling match until the fight spilled to the floor and Hero was thrown head first into a steel chair set up on the ringpost which busted him open. Back inside Hero looked to end the match quickly with the Roaring Elbow but Joey grabbed a trash can which met Hero's elbow sending the champ down in obvious pain. Joey then worked over the arm and even tied it behind Hero's back leaving Hero defenseless.
Once Hero got out, the fight spilled to the floor which saw Joey spill some of his blood and Hero got his second wind. Hero then pulled a table out from under the ring and went for a Senton on a prone Joey but Joey moved out of the way and Hero went crashing through the table! The crowd thought it was over, but Hero kicked out which prompted Joey to wrap a chain around his boot but Hero ducked and hit a pair of Roaring Elbows including one with the chain around his arm. He then locked in the Hangman's Clutch forcing Joey to tap out.
After the match, fans began to litter the ring with trash ala Threemendous from just three years back when Joey retained the PWG Title against B-Boy inside a Steel Cage. Hero then took the mic and ran down the fans a little bit for throwing trash at him and said PWG shows from here on out will end with his arm being raised as the winner.
Joey then recovered from his loss and grabbed the mic from Hero and said it was wrong of him to insult the PWG audience. They spent they're hard earned money to see great wrestling and said he would be a man and shake Hero's hand. After some debating, Hero accepted and then even embraced but Hero turned around and clocked Joey in the head with the belt and grabbed the mic and said "MY BAD" and walked away, closing a great night of action.
The first half of the show was real good with the six-man being real impressive and hopefully leading to another opportunity for all six involved. The second half was AWESOME and made the show memorable. The fans turning on the Bucks wasn't a shock because they started losing support at DDT4 after most everyone thought Omega/Taylor got a pin over them, but it was only a two count. I feel PWG should capitalize on this and turn them full heel since it's pretty clear they're not the clean-cut babyfaces they were a year ago when they got their start n PWG. As for Hero, I like the turn and feel it's long over-due. The only problem is who's left for him? Joey was the last major threat and he just beat him in the typical PWG blow-off match so it'll interesting to see what happens on Aug. 28.
