ROH house show report
January 17, 2009
Edison, N.J.
Report by Daniel Chornomaz, PWTorch reader

The event was held at the Inman Sports Club.

(1) Brent Albright defeated Rhett Titus in the opener.

(2) Delirious beat Necro Butcher, Damien Wayne, and Sean Denny in a four-way match. Necro was throwing some very light punches out there.

Somwehere between these matches, Prince Nana ran into the arena and created the biggest pop of the night. They need to move this angle along though.

(3) Jay Briscoe beat Austin Aries and Jimmy Jacobs in an unscheduled three-way match. Austin Aries was scheduled to face Nigel McGuinness in a title match. Tyler Black was scheduled to face Jimmy Jacobs. But after some promo work from Tyler Black and pleas to Cary Silkin, the title match was changed to Tyler Black versus Nigel McGuinness.

(4) The American Wolves (Davey Richards & Eddie Edwards w/Larry Sweeney) defeated Roderick Strong & Erick Stevens in a Lumberjack Strap match. The mostly trainee lumberjacks took their strapping stips very seriously.

(5) Chris Escobar and Grizzly Redwood battled to a no contest after an unknown newcomer came in and destroyed both of them. The newcomer looked a little like Dick the Bulldog Brower. The unknown newcomer was meant to come off like an '80s style monster heel, but the crowd did not buy it.

(6) Jerry Lynn pinned Bryan Danielson in somewhat of an upset in a match that seemed to be building, but was about 10 minutes too short. Weakest Danielson match I have ever seen.

(7) ROH champion Nigel McGuinness and Tyler Black battled to a 60 minute time limit draw. Crowd was very much into the match, which had a ton of nearfalls. At one point, Nigel said he had enough and was leaving the ring and was walking towards the ramp, where he was met by Danielson, who said you will either face me or Tyler Black. At about the 25-minute mark, almost all of the wrestlers hit the ring, interfering and battling with each other. Much of the crowd was groaning at this point at the overbooking, A spotfest ensued. Danielson came out and said this was not the ROH "way," but he was attacked as well and joined in this pointless interruption.

The match resumed after all the wrestlers left the ring area. leaving Black and McGuinness to continue. Nigel was bleeding slightly from the lip and forehead. At what by my watch was about the 50 minute mark, the bell rang somewhat unexpectedly and the match was declared a draw. The bell did not ring in the middle of a match ending moment, although it did appear Tyler Black had an advantage at that time. Tyler begged Cary Silkin for five more minutes. Nigel got the microphone and started to indicate he was okay with five more minutes if everyone agreed to it, but it was just a heel swerve and he told us all to go to hell.

Crowd was lighter than normal, maybe in the 600 range. The merchandise tables were noticeably not doing as well as normal. This was the weakest ROH card I have ever seen. Adam Pearce's influence was noticeable, and not in a good way. The card was not even three hours long. There were a whole host of regulars, like Chris Hero, Claudio Castagnoli, Kevin Steen, and El Generico, who were not on the card.
