8/15 ROH in Cleveland, Ohio: Danielson vs. King, Briscoes vs. Jacobs & Delirious, McGuinness vs. Generico Aug 17, 2008 - 1:21:38 PM
ROH Live Event/DVD taping
August 15, 2008
Cleveland, Ohio
Report by Paul Greer, PWTorch Subscriber
Friday night ROH made there return to Cleveland. I'd estimate the crowd was the same size the last time they were in Cleveland, around 300. There was no announcement of a return date so we might have to wait another two years before they come back to town.
PRE-TAPING
I'm not 100 percent sure on all the names of the pre-show wrestlers.
(A) Mitch Franklin and his partner defeated Yellow and Blue Ninja.
(B) Local wrestler Johnny Gargano defeated some guy who seemed to be doing a gimmick that was a cross between Taz and Raven.
(C) "Sugar Foot" Alex Payne and Lou Crank defeated Sailor and his partner.
MAIN SHOW
(1) Kevin Steen defeated Jigsaw. Nice opener but nothing special. Steen was over with the crowd.
(2) Delirious defeated Rhett Titus after referee stoppage. Delirious came out depressed. He was distraught over being rejected by Daizee Haize and Titus took advantage. Jimmy Jacobs and Allison Wonderland came out to support Delirious. Jacobs kept telling Delirious that he understood his pain and that he should get his revenge on Titus. It worked and Delirious went crazy on Titus. Busting his head open, licking his blood and giving him a brutal beating. Daizee came out to convince Delirious not to join the Age of the Fall but Delirious left clutching to the bosom of Allison.
(3) Byran Danielson defeated Kenny King. This was a really good showing for King who was booked strong against Danielson. The match started off humorously when King was posing to the crowd and asked for Danielson to do the same. Danielson was wearing a wife beater and took the challenge. He took off the shirt to reveal a horrible redneck tan. The crowd chanted "Farmer's tan" at Danielson. King dominated the last half of the match in this fifteen minute time limit contest. With less than 30 seconds, Danielson made a come back with elbow strikes and a cattle mutilation to win by submission.
(4) Sara Del Rey defeated Sassy Stephanie (?) in less than 30 seconds. Hagadorn, Adam Pierce, Bobby Dempsey and Larry Sweeney were in her corner. A quick stomp to the chest and the rest was history.
(5) Adam Pierce defeated Rukus. For some reason Bobby wasn't allowed to stay for this match. Pierce is coming along nicely as a solid in-ring performer. I really enjoyed this gloriified squash match.
(6) Austin Aries defeated Tyler Black in an Age of the Fall rules match. The stipulation was that it had to be a scientific wrestling match. The interesting thing to note is that Aries is the one who broke those rules after a very nice mat based beginning. Jacobs and Delirious came out to attack Aries. The Briscos Brothers made the save and the next match began.
(7) The Brisco Brothers defeated Jimmy Jacobs & Delirious. The match started with an around the arena brawl. It ended with Mark putting Delirious through a table and the Briscos hitting the springboard doomsday device on Jacobs.
(8) Erick Stevens retained the FIP title when Claudio Castagnoli was DQ'd. Claudio wouldn't stop puching Stevens in the corner and referee Paul Turner counted to five. Frustrated Claudio hit Turner and Danielson came out for the save. They fought to the back.
(9) Chris Hero & Go Shiozaki defeated Brent Albright & Roderick Strong. Great match with lots of stiff kicks and chops. Shiozaki was over with the crowd which was really into Hero as well. Hero got the pin on Strong.
(10) Nigel McGuiness retained the ROH Title over El Generico by submission. This is why I enjoy ROH so much. What looked on paper and started as a glorified squash match, actually turned into a match that made El Generico a legit contender for the title. The last ten minutes of this match is incredible. The clotheslines, the near falls and the crowd popping for every move, made this match easily four stars.
TIPS FOR SENDING IN HOUSE SHOW REPORTS
If you attend an arena event in future, either house shows or TV tapings, we encourage you to send us a report for publication. You can direct your reports to pwtorch@gmail.com.
We accept reports in any format, but if it's not much trouble, please format your report like you see above, with the matches numbered like this (1) , (2) , (3) , with the opening line of each match paragraph stating who beat whom (don't just say Wrestler A vs. Wrestler beat with the result listed later; instead, state up front who won so those readers who don't have time to read the entire report (i. e. their boss walks past their cubicle all the time looking beat their shoulder) can at least quickly assess the results.
Also, please list tag teams using the & symbol as opposed to stating and. Reserve use of and when listing results in a three-way or four-way match where there are no teams (i. e. Wrestler A beat Wrestler B and Wrestler C in a three-way match ) so it is easy to differentiate a handicap match from a three-way match.
If you know HTML coding for bolding, you can also bold out the first line of each match description. If you don't know HTML symbols, then we can add those ourselves.
Special thanks to everyone who helps us with reports on live events!
