He gave Naito all he couldn handle, but ultimately Naito’s work on Goto’s leg allowed him to get the win in the end after hitting Destino twice. WINNER: Jon Moxley (6 pts) in 20:30. (****¾)
(Radican’s Analysis: They promised a war and delivered big time. The brawling action was fantastic, but Moxley beating Ishii at the striking game surprised me. This was a war and was great in all of the best ways. The only thing I didn’t like was the headbutts. The fighting spirit spots down the stretch and the near falls were tremendous. Ishii kicking out of Death Rider was great. The crowd heat for the action was insane as well. What a match!)
Ishii refused help after the match and tried to walk out on his own.
Moxley got on the mic and thanked the fans. He then thanked Ishii for being a sick bastard and being in the ring with him. He said his career was in the toilet bowl and then the fans welcomed him so he could paint gruesome works of art. He thanked the fans. Moxley said nobody can tell him what he’s capable and what he can and can’t do and what he can accomplish. He said he’s going to do it or die trying. Moxley said he’s going to win the G1 and he slammed down the mic. WOW! I got chills listening to that promo.
Backstage, Moxley said he said everything he had to say. He said his wife would be mad at him because she hates tables. He said it was all Ishii’s fault and walked away.
Overall thoughts: This was a really good night of B block action. It didn’t hurt that the crowd was hot for nearly every match, but the action delivered as well. Taichi vs. Takagi was super hot to open the B block action on the card and the fans really carried the match, which turned out to be excellent.
Natio badly needed a win and he got it in a very good match against Goto. Goto wrestled with an edge and even though he lost, he’s a much more interesting wrestler in the tournament this year given his new attitude in the ring. Naito avoided going 0-3, which would have made it really difficult for him to have any hope of winning the tournament.
The big surprise of the night was White going 0-3 and being outsmarted by Yano. I still see him being in the mix at the end, so I expect him to go on a big win streak in the coming days.
The main event between Ishii and Moxley was tremendous. They brawled all over the crowd and it felt like a real fight and the fans were there for every chairshot. Seeing Ishii hit a splash off the top through a table on the outside was insane. Moxley is wrestling with a purpose and his post-match promo gave me chills as he put over Ishii and talked about his career being in the toilet bowl, but now he was in NJPW and he’s there to win G1.
I definitely recommend not missing Moxley vs. Ishii. It was an incredible match. Taichi vs. Shingo and Goto vs. Naito were really good as well. This was a very good night for the B block.
