10/2 WWE in Ontario Results – Detailed Report on WWE Title main event, SD Tag Title match, Orton big night

Approx Attendance: 1,250-1,500. No one was in the upper deck, and there were tons of open spaces throughout. I was a bit surprised, given this arena usually comes close to full capacity for WWE Live events and Smackdown tapings that I’ve attended the last year or two. I wonder if Raw being at Staples Center on Monday night had anything to do with it or not. Despite the arena feeling pretty empty at times, the wrestlers tried very hard and the crowd was very into the event.

(1) Dolph Ziggler beat IC champion The Miz (w/Maryse) in a non-title match. Miz by far got the most heat of the night; nobody else was all that close. Both wrestlers got their spots in. Can’t wait for No Mercy, because these two had the match of the night until the Main Event. The match was very good.

(2) American Alpha & Hype Bros. beat The Vaudevillains & Ascension in an eight-man tag match. American Alpha got a decent reaction, the Hype Bros. were the most over, and the Vaudevillians got an even weaker response than the Ascension. Mojo Rawley ended up scoring the pinfall, and he worked super hard throughout the night to get the fans into it, but I just got the feeling most people around me weren’t aware of most people in this match. Mojo had some fun dancing spots though that got the crowd laughing uproariously a few times. The match was okay.

(3) Apollo Crews beat Curt Hawkins. Little to no reaction for Hawkins. However, Apollo Crews was pretty over with the crowd. Pretty quick match. The match was fine.

(4) SD Women’s champion Becky Lynch & Nikki Bella beat Natalya & Carmella & Alexa Bliss in a handicap match. Not sure why this was a two-on-three match, but Becky & Nikki went over here. Becky came out first and had the biggest pop of the night until Nikki Bella came out. I was expecting more Becky chants, but really, the crowd was far more into Nikki. The match was fine.

(5) Baron Corbin beat Jack Swagger. Corbin has awesome facials, and really commands the ring. I think Corbin twisted his ankle as he was hopping around on it in the ring and then gave Swagger a schoolboy for the win. He seemed fine afterward, but the finish felt odd. The match was fine.

(6) Randy Orton beat Bray Wyatt via RKO. Orton got the response of the night; he was without question the most over. The wrestlers waited for 3-4 minutes after the match started for the “Randy, Randy” chants to die down. Bray was also very over. Both wrestlers got all their spots in. The match was very good.

(7) Kane beat Tyler Breeze. The bell rang and Tyler tried to get Kane to take a selfie, he did, and then chokeslammed Tyler for the win. People around me were very happy to see Kane and popped big time for him. The match was fine for what it was.

(8) SD tag champs Heath Slater & Rhyno beat The Usos to retain the Smackdown Tag Titles. I was expecting a better match out of this pairing, but it never really felt like it got going. Usos worked over Slater, then Rhino hot-tagged for the Gore on Jimmy. The match was fine.

(9) WWE World Hvt. champion A.J. Styles beat John Cena and Dean Ambrose in a triple threat to retain the WWE World Title. Ambrose took the pin here. A.J. was hugely over, Dean was hugely over, and Cena was insanely over. Cena was the second most over of the night behind Randy, and not a single “Let’s Go Cena / Cena Sucks” chant even started. It was all cheers for Cena tonight. Tons of fun back and forth between the three exchanging moves, and very fast-paced action. Styles gets the pinfall on Ambrose in this one. Great match.

All in all, a fun show.
