Intercontinental champion The Miz experienced a career resurgence after WrestleMania when his wife, Maryse, joined him as an on-air character. In an interview with Fox Sports promoting the WWE Draft, Miz talked about the psychology of having his wife at ringside.
“When your wife’s out there looking at you ringside, you kinda want to show off. So that’s basically what I’ve been doing is trying to impress her and not lose, because your wife doesn’t want to be married to a loser. That’s what motivates me,” Miz told reporter Nick Schwartz, suggesting a shoot element to his recently-improved in-ring work.
Miz also shared a classic story of celebrating Cleveland’s first major sports title in 52 years when the Cavaliers won the NBA Title and Maryse no-sold the entire event.
“So I’m sitting there by myself, just cheering, jumping up and down like a little schoolgirl, and Maryse is just like, ‘Why, I don’t understand why you’re so excited?’ You don’t get it. It’s been 52 years, we’ve had this drought! They just won the NBA Finals! She goes ‘yeah, so what?'”
As for the Draft unfolding Tuesday on Smackdown, Miz said “no one knows anything about the Draft,” just the rules revealed on WWE’s website. Asked about the inclusion of six NXT Draft picks, Miz quickly hyped former NXT champion Finn Balor.
“The talk of the town has been Finn Balor. Finn Balor has been killing it down there in NXT, and the fans love him. He looks like one of those guys who could be ready to be up here in WWE, but who knows what’s going to happen?” Miz said.
