[HOUR ONE]
-The show opened with the Smackdown video intro. After the video, pyro exploded on the stage in the arena. The camera panned the crowd and Michael Cole introduced the show. He said it was the final time for Smackdown Superstars to impress before next week’s Draft. They then showed a graphic for the Women’s Tag Team Championship match. Wade Barrett hyped the match. The screen moved to a graphic for the Intercontinental Championship match between Gunther and Xavier Woods. Barrett then hyped the main event pitting Matt Riddle against Solo Sikoa in a no disqualification match.
-Judgment Day’s music played and Damien Priest and Finn Balor made their entrance. Cole threw to a video recap of Priest’s attack on Bad Bunny the night after Wrestlemania on Raw. Cole mentioned that Bad Bunny will be on Raw this Monday in Chicago.
-Rey Mysterio’s music played and he made his entrance with Santos Escobar in tow.
(1) JUDGMENT DAY (Damien Priest & Finn Balor) vs. L.W.O. (Rey Mysterio & Santos Escobar)
Mysterio started with Balor. Balor went for a kick but Mysterio caught it and took Balor to the corner. Mysterio took down Balor with a headscissors. Mysterio stayed on the sttack and hit a basement dropkick. Mysterio went for a springboard moonsault but Balor got the knees up. Balor tagged in Priest. Priest took Mysterio down then stomped on him. Priest posed for the crowd and they booed. Priest whipped Mysterio into the corner hard and charged with a big elbow. Balor and Priest traded tags and hit a backbreaker into a leg drop. Priest made the cover for a two count. Priest took Mysterio back to the corner and tagged Balor back in. Balor drove his knee into Mysterio’s back then put on a headlock. The crowd cheered on Mysterio as he fought to his feet. Mysterio worked toward the corner but Balor pulled him back. Balor charged Mysterio in the corner but Mysterio got his feet up. Balor took over again momentarily but Mysterio countered with a bulldog and tagged in Escobar. Escobar ran the ropes and hit a flying forearm. Escobar knocked Priest off the apron and hit a backbreaker on Balor. Escobar dodged an attack from Priest and took down Balor and Priest. Escobar knocked Balor off the apron with Priest then launched Mysterio into Priest. Priest rolled to the outside with Balor. Mysterio charged Balor but Priest pulled Balor out of the way and Mysterio hit hard on the outside. Escobar ran the ropes and looked for a dive but Priest cut him off and took him down. Priest posed in the ring. [c]
Back from break, Escobar fought back on Priest. Escobar ran the ropes but Priest caught him coming in with a side kick. Priest made the cover for a two count. Priest put Escobar in a headlock. Escobar fought to his feet but Priest struck him from behind. Priest sent Escobar to the corner. Escobar fought out against Priest and Balor. Priest sent Escobar back to the corner and hit a running knee. Escobar recovered and hit a big dropkick. Both men were down and crawled toward their corners to make a tag. Mysterio and Balor tagged in. Mysterio hit a hurricanrana then went to the top. Mysterio came off with a senton then a springboard crossbody for a near fall. Balor recovered and delivered a kick but Mysterio fought back with kicks of his own. Priest made a blindtag and went for a slam on Mysterio but Mysterio dumped Priest over the top rope. Mysterio set up Balor for a 619 and hit it. Escobar hit a splash off the top rope and went for the cover but Balor wasn’t the legal man. Priest hit the ring and dumped Mysterio out. Priest then hit South of Heaven on Escobar and got the win.
WINNER: Damien Priest & Finn Balor in 13:00
-Priest took the mic as he and Balor stood on the ramp. Priest touted the return of Bad Bunny. He said he hopes the visit goes differently for Bad Bunny this time. Priest laughed.
(McDonald’s Analysis: I like when Smackdown opens with matches like this. It’s a cool way to open the show and gets right to the action. Both teams worked well here. The story of the match was good, but it made the babyfaces look dumb. Mysterio is the only wrestler who has been on TV the entire time I’ve watched wrestling. You’d think he’d have more awareness than that. The announcers couldn’t even pretend to frame this as cheating. Yet again, Escobar takes a pin and he loses more and more credibility by the week. Priest really stood out here. I noticed it on Raw this week as well. He may never emerge as a major player, but he could be a top of the second tier type of guy. If nothing else, he has a great presence and looks like he belongs. His promo at the end was short and sweet but got a good amount of heat. I’m glad that he’s getting some shine opposite of Bad Bunny on the road to Backlash. He was a little lost in the shuffle before and he has made the most of this new opportunity.)
-Barrett and Cole sat ringside. Cole hyped Bad Bunny’s appearance on Raw Monday. Barrett told Bad Bunny to stay out of the way as he’s a musician, not a fighter. Cole then threw to a video recap of Solo Sikoa’s attack on Matt Riddle last week on Smackdown.
-Sikoa and the Usos walked in the back. Cole hyped the main event against Matt Riddle for later in the evening. [c]
-Adam Pearce was in the back. Zelina Vega approached. She said she can’t control the draft next week, but she can control what’s happening right now. She asked for a Smackdown Tag Team title match against Rhea Ripley at Backlash. Pearce gasped. Vega said she’s the only Puerto Rican woman on the roster and she wants to represent at Backlash. Pearce said he would take to management and Ripley. Vega said she can’t wait to hear what they have to say.
-Cole threw to a video package on Shinsuke Nakamura. The video showed Nakamura working out with Nakamura narrating. The video spliced in footage of Nakamura in the ring. He called himself the King of Strong Style.
(McDonald’s Analysis: I really liked this. I mentioned last week that a rebuild of Nakamura could be really beneficial as they try to set up more opponents for Roman Reigns. This video package helps to do that and makes Nakamura seem like a big deal. I hope we get more of these to go with Nakamura’s matches. Packages like this are underrated. They should use them more often.)
-Karrion Kross was in the back. He said identity takes time to find and more time to find out if it’s yours. He said it can be destroyed in three seconds. He then mentioned Nakamura. Kross said he never hurt anyone in his life, it was the tarot cards. Kross mentioned Drew McIntyre and Riddick Moss along with Mysterio. Kross said he’s going to take away Nakamura’s honor. Scarlett was behind Kross now. He said “tick, tock” as the video faded out.
(McDonald’s Analysis: Okay, maybe I spoke too soon on the Nakamura package. This was solid too. Kross is really good in these short bursts. Anything longer and he flounders a bit, but I like the limited use of him. He has a feud, then goes away for a little bit, then comes back. He does it really well and it doesn’t burn out the character. I’m a little surprised they’re going with him and Nakamura, but I guess he’s credible enough to feet to Nakamura at this point.)
-Ricochet made his entrance. Braun Strowman made his entrance right behind Ricochet as the music switched over. Cole threw to a recap of the Viking Raiders’ attack on Ricochet and Strowman last week on Smackdown. They showed a graphic for the match and Cole hyped it for after the break. [c]
-They showed graphics for Riddle against Sikoa and Gunther against Xavier Woods. Cole and Barrett hyped both matches for later in the evening.
-The Viking Raiders made their entrance with Valhalla. Cole threw to another recap of the Raiders’ attack on Strowman and Ricochet last week.
(2) RICOCHET & BRAUN STROWMAN vs. VIKING RAIDERS (Erik & Ivar w/ Valhalla)
Strowman started with Ivar. Cole mentioned that the winner of this match could get a future Tag Team title match. Ivar took control of Strowman in the corner and hit a series of elbows. Strowman recovered and tossed Ivar into the corner. Strowman rained down blows then whipped Ivar across the ring. Strowman clubbed Ivar down then took him down with a running shoulder tackle. Strowman knocked Erik off the apron. Ivar fought back with strikes but Strowman took him down with a short arm clothesline. Erik tagged in but Strowman didn’t see it. The Raiders pounded on Strowman together and took him down. Strowman fought back and tagged in Ricochet. Strowman tried to throw Ricochet but Ricochet fell down. Ricochet recovered and knocked Erik to the outside. Ricochet then ran the ropes and hit a dive on Erik and Ivar. Ricochet stood tall at ringside. [c]
Erik was in control of Ricochet with a headlock. They showed a clip from the break. Valhalla made the distraction and Erik hit a suplex on Ricochet. In the ring, Erik kept the advantage. Ricochet fought to his feet and punched at Erik. Erik grabbed an arm bar and held Ricochet back from making a tag. Ricochet went for a suplex but Erik blocked. Erik went for a suplex of his own but Ricochet landed on his feet and tagged in Strowman. Strowman took Erik down then knocked Ivar off the apron. Strowman sent Erik to the corner and hit a running dropkick. Erik rolled to the outside. Strowman motioned to the crowd then ran around the ring and took out Erik and Ivar with the Strowman Express. Valhalla distracted Strowman and Erik took out Strowman. Ivar tagged in and hit a big splash off the top. Ivar made the cover for a two count. Erik tagged back in and the Raiders went for a double team. Strowman fought back and took down both Raiders with shoulder tackles. Ricochet tagged in. He hit a back handspring elbow on Erik but Ivar took Ricochet down. Ricochet dodged a pair of attacks then hit a running knee followed by a kick. Strowman tagged in and hit a running splash on Ivar in the corner. Strowman and Ricochet hit a double team. Strowman took out Erik with a kick. Ricochet climbed to Strowman’s shoulders and came off onto Ivar with a Swanton Bomb. Ricochet made the cover for the win.
WINNER: Ricochet & Braun Strowman in 11:00
(McDonald’s Analysis: Solid, but nothing out of the ordinary. The botch in the beginning was not pretty and luckily, no one got hurt. Anyway, Ricochet and Strowman got the win and they would be good opponents for the Usos, but I don’t know if it would work with Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens. The Raiders are always made to look credible, until they lose. They will attack another team, look credible for a week, then lose again. They’re stuck in this weird pattern and it never seems to change. Ricochet and Strowman are an odd pairing and it gives them something to do, but I feel they would be better off as singles at this point. I wonder if they get split up in the Draft.)
-Cole and Barrett sat ringside. Cole and Barrett speculated that Ricochet and Strowman could get a title shot against the winners of the rematch between the Usos and Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens. Cole said that match was next week’s main event on Smackdown. Cole threw to a recap of Sonya Deville and Chelsea Green tossing water in the face of Liv Morgan on Raw.
-Morgan and Raquel Rodriguez were in the back with Kayla Braxton. Morgan said they’ll see her be messy. Rodriguez calmed her down and told Morgan to save it for the ring. Morgan said to watch them. Morgan’s music hit and they made their entrance in the arena. Cole called Morgan different but Barrett said she was unhinged. They showed a graphic for the Women’s Tag Team title match and hyped it for after the break. [c]
(McDonald’s Analysis: The word they were looking for to describe Morgan is awkward. Insufferable also works.)
-They showed a graphic for Riddle and Sikoa. Barrett hyped the match as the main event.
-Morgan and Rodriguez were in the ring.
-Sonya Deville and Chelsea Green made their entrance. Deville took the mic and told the crowd to shut up. Green told the crowd they shouldn’t treat their new champions this way. Green said they wake up every morning winning. Deville said they’re going to show why they’re winners and Morgan and Rodriguez are losers. Green tossed more water on Morgan. They laughed as Rodriguez held Morgan back.
(3) LIV MORGAN & RAQUEL RODRIGUEZ (c) vs. SONYA DEVILLE & CHELSEA GREEN – Women’s Tag Team Championship Match
Morgan started against Green. Morgan hit a dropkick right away. Deville tagged in. Morgan rolled up Deville but Deville countered. Morgan hit a big kick then tagged in Rodriguez. Rodriguez whipped Morgan into Deville then Morgan whipped Rodriguez into Deville. Rodriguez stayed on the attack and took Deville down. Rodriguez went for a slam but Deville wriggled free and chopped Rodriguez’s knee. Green tagged in and went for a kick. Rodriguez caught it and slammed Green a pair of times. Morgan tagged in but Green dumped Rodriguez to the outside. Green hit Morgan with a knee and went for a dive on Rodriguez. Rodriguez caught Green coming in and held her there. Deville came around the corner and hit a big knee. Morgan ran the ropes and dove out to take out Green and Deville. Morgan rolled Green in the ring and made the cover for a near fall. Green and Morgan battled in the corner. Green hit a Russian Leg Sweep off the top and made the cover for a two count.
[HOUR TWO]
Green slammed Morgan and Deville tagged in. Deville took Morgan to the corner and kicked at her. The ref admonished Deville. As the ref was distracted, Green pulled Morgan’s hair. Deville went back on the attack. Green tagged in and Deville and Green went for a double suplex. Morgan landed on her feet and hit a double neckbreaker. Rodriguez tagged in and knocked down Deville and Green. Rodriguez then hit a clothesline on Green followed by a fallaway slam. She then hit a corkscrew elbow and made the cover but Deville broke up the count. Rodriguez took Deville to the top rope and hit a superplex. Morgan hit a missile dropkick on Green. All four women were down in the ring. Morgan hit a backstabber on Green. Deville hit Morgan with a big kick. Rodriguez hit a big kick on Deville. Morgan poured water all over Green then rolled her up. During the roll-up Rodriguez pushed on Morgan for leverage as Morgan got the win.
WINNER: Raquel Rodriguez & Liv Morgan in 6:00 to retain the Women’s Tag Team Championship
(McDonald’s Analysis: Notice how they don’t do the championship entrance for these titles? It wouldn’t be as noticeable if they didn’t do it for every other title now. Anyway, this match was here. The finish was stupid. I guess water would make Green get pinned, because it’s Green? I don’t know, I just can’t get into anything Morgan does at this point and now, she’s making Rodriguez almost as bad as she is.)
-Kayla welcomed Matt Riddle in the back. She asked why Riddle would risk everything in a match against Sikoa tonight. Riddle asked why not. He said Zayn and Owens aren’t there tonight because they’re getting ready for their match next week. Riddle called them his step brothers. Riddle then said the last time they met, Sikoa left him buried under a table. Riddle said that tonight, Sikoa will be the one under the table.
-Xavier Woods made his entrance. They showed a graphic for Woods against Gunther. Cole and Barrett hyped the match for after the break. [c]
-Woods was in the ring as his music played.
-Gunther made his entrance with Ludwig Kaiser and Giovanni Vinci at his side. Gunther turned to Vinci and Kaiser and dismissed them to the back. Gunther entered the ring and stared down Woods. Formal ring introductions then took place.
(McDonald’s Analysis: Formal ring introductions. Earlier point proven. Gunther sent Imperium to the back. It makes sense, he shouldn’t need them for Woods. Subtle, but cool. Again, it’s getting harder and harder to understand how Gunther is a heel.)
(4) GUNTHER (c) vs. XAVIER WOODS – Intercontinental Championship Match
They locked up and Gunther took Woods to the corner. Gunther went for a chop and Woods moved. Woods kicked at Gunther’s legs. Gunther took Woods down with a headlock. Woods fought up. Gunther hit Woods in the body. Woods went for a headlock but Gunther shot him off. Woods went for a shoulderblock but Gunther stood tall. Woods ran the ropes and ducked under Gunther. Woods got back to his feet and Gunther chopped him down. Gunther stood tall. [c]
Gunther was on the attack. He threw Woods in the corner and chopped his back. Woods turned and got chopped on the chest this time. Woods wailed in the corner as Gunther stalked him. Woods fought back with chops but Gunther answered with a big chop of his own. Gunther slammed Woods. Gunther taunted Woods as Woods got to his feet. Woods fought back and went for a takedown. Gunther resisted and delivered another chop to Woods. Gunther made the cover for a near fall. Gunther chopped Woods down again. Woods fought back with heavy blows but Gunther answered with a butterfly suplex. Gunther made the cover for a near fall. Gunther screamed at Woods. He called Woods a disgrace. Woods fought back and took Gunther to the corner. Woods hit a series of kicks but Gunther fought back with big blows. They then traded shots. Woods ducked under Gunther and hit a flying forearm that took Gunther down. Gunther rolled to the outside and Woods came through the ropes with a dropkick. Woods ran the ropes and dove over the top and took out Gunther at ringside. Woods sent Gunther into the ring and went to the top rope but Gunther landed a chop. Woods knocked Gunther off the ropes then climbed to the top. Woods came off with a leg drop and made the cover but Gunther kicked out at two. Woods tried to lift Gunther to his shoulders but Gunther blocked and put Woods in a sleeper. Woods fought out and Gunther went for a powerbomb but Woods landed on his feet. Woods planted Gunther face first then hit a Crucifix for a near fall. Woods took Gunther down again and went for another cover but Gunther countered into a sleeper. Woods tried to fight out but Gunther regained the sleeper and Woods submitted.
WINNER: Gunther in 11:00 to retain the Intercontinental Championship
(McDonald’s Analysis: Another good Gunther match. Gunther can just work with everybody. Woods looked good here and I was actually impressed he took the beating he did. He fired back on Gunther more than I thought and there were some stiff shots in this one. I liked the story of the match with Woods fighting from underneath and getting a few hope spots. In the end, Gunther is just too much for any of these guys to overcome. The story with Gunther always winning in different ways is awesome and something that sets him apart from everyone else. I really wish more wrestlers would win their matches with different moves. Gunther is the only one. I don’t know what will happen in the Draft, but number one on my wish list is a new set of opponents for Gunther to deliver these matches with. Woods is a good worker, but his character doesn’t allow him to be taken seriously. I wish they would drop the New Day deal and go in different directions with Woods and Kofi Kingston when he returns.)
-They showed a graphic for Riddle against Sikoa. Barrett hyped the match.
-They showed video of Zayn and Owens winning the Tag Team titles at Wrestlemania. Cole said there will be a look-back after the break. [c]
-They showed a video package on Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens winning the Tag Team Championships from the Usos at Wrestlemania. The video included headlines from news articles about the match. The video then shifted to Zayn and Owens with the titles on Smackdown. The video then shifted to the Usos and their challenge to Owens and Zayn. The end of the video hyped the rematch for next week on Smackdown.
-The Usos made their entrance in the arena. Cole said that next week is the beginning of the Draft but it may be the end of the Cinderella story for Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens.
-They showed a graphic for Cody Rhodes against Brock Lesnar at Backlash. Cole hyped the match. They then announced Zelina Vega against Rhea Ripley. They also hyped Omos against Seth Rollins and announced a Triple Threat for the United States Championship with Austin Theory defending against Bobby Lashley and Bronson Reed. Cole then hyped the six man tag match. Cole said Backlash is in two weeks from Puerto Rico and will be hosted by Bad Bunny.
-Jey said the Bloodline is in your city. Jimmy mocked people asking about their loss. Jey responded to each question with “we don’t know”. Jey said they’re going to do what they always do. He said they’re going to finish the mission and win the titles. Jey said there’s a big six man coming at Backlash. Jimmy said next week is a big, big rematch. He said it’s a Wrestlemania rematch. Jey said it’s a nine time Tag Team champion rematch. Jey said it’s a call your mama and tell them the Usos are on TV rematch. Jey said it’s a dedicate to the Tribal Chief kind of rematch. Jimmy said that next week Owens and Zayn are going to get bodied. Jimmy said that Riddle is going to get bodied tonight. Jey then introduced Solo Sikoa as the street champion and enforcer of the Bloodline.
-Solo Sikoa made his entrance. Cole threw to a video recap of Sikoa’s attack on Riddle last week on Smackdown. They showed the graphic one more time and Cole hyped the no disqualification stipulation. He said Riddle and Sikoa can do whatever they want to each other after the break. [c]
-They showed a graphic for the WWE Draft next week on Smackdown. Cole mentioned that everyone is eligible.
(McDonald’s Analysis: It’s a little odd that they haven’t announced any parameters for the Draft yet. The past couple of years, wrestlers were broken into “pools” that could be drafted on each night. That hasn’t been mentioned at all. I didn’t like that concept, so I hope they don’t go back to it. I assume there will be something similar to this as there will need to be big names available to be chosen on Monday. Regardless, I hope they take this draft seriously and give us some real rules and stick to the split.)
-Riddle’s music played and he attacked Sikoa from behind.
(5) SOLO SIKOA (w/ Jey & Jimmy Uso) vs. MATT RIDDLE – No Disqualification Match
Riddle went after Sikoa and went for a suplex in the corner but Sikoa tossed him off. Sikoa then took Riddle down with a clothesline. Sikoa pounded on Riddle then sent him off the ropes. Sikoa took him down with an elbow. Sikoa choked Riddle with the top rope then stalked Riddle. Sikoa sent Riddle to the corner and charged. Riddle lifted his legs and went for a triangle choke. Sikoa fought Riddle off then carried him into the ring and delivered a powerbomb to break the hold. Sikoa made the cover for a near fall. Sikoa dropped to the outside and went under the ring. Sikoa tossed a couple of kendo sticks into the ring. Sikoa went back under the ring and threw in a pair of steel chairs. Riddle reached for the weapons but Sikoa stopped him. Sikoa picked up a kendo stick and hit Riddle with it. Sikoa beckoned Riddle to his feet and swung the stick but Riddle caught it and delivered a kick. Riddle stayed on the attack but Sikoa tossed Riddle to the outside. Riddle hit Sikoa with a kendo stick as Sikoa tried to follow him out. Riddle went under the ring and got a table but Sikoa attacked him from behind. Sikoa lifted Riddle to his shoulders but Riddle escaped to the apron. Riddle hit a running kick then sent Sikoa into the steps. Riddle then hit a Bro-ton on the outside and celebrated. Cole asked if Riddle could pull it off as they cut to break. [c]
Riddle and Sikoa traded shots. Sikoa took Riddle down then looked for a Rock Bottom but Riddle fought out. Riddle ran the ropes but Sikoa caught him with a Samoan Drop and made the cover for a near fall. Sikoa grabbed a chair and stalked Riddle. Riddle went to the corner and Sikoa beat on Riddle. Sikoa grabbed the chair and positioned it around Riddle’s neck. Sikoa taunted Riddle and backed up. Sikoa measured and charged but Riddle rose and tossed the chair at Sikoa. Riddle knocked Sikoa into the chair propped up in the corner. Riddle wore out the kendo stick on Sikoa then hit hit with a chair. Riddle tossed the chair to Sikoa and delivered a knee. Riddle made the cover for a near fall. Riddle set up two chairs next to each other. Sikoa fought Riddle off and charged. Riddle caught Sikoa and delivered a belly to belly suplex onto the two chairs. Riddle made the cover for another two count. Riddle buried Sikoa under chairs. Riddle climbed to the top rope but Sikoa rolled to the outside. Riddle dropped to the apron and went for the running kick. Sikoa caught Riddle and threw him down. Sikoa tossed Riddle over the announce table. Sikoa tried to turn over the table, but Riddle pushed against the table with his legs to hold the table back. Sikoa attacked Riddle behind the table and Riddle answered with a big knee. Riddle tipped the table over on Sikoa and celebrated. The Usos came around the corner and took Riddle down. The Usos sent Riddle into the ring and Riddle fought back. He knocked the Usos to the floor then dove over the top rope to take them both out. Riddle fought to his feet and got back in the ring. Sikoa emerged from under the table and stared Riddle down. Sikoa climbed over the table and Riddle ran around the ring. Riddle dove at Sikoa and Sikoa caught Riddle. Sikoa delivered a Rock Bottom on the apron. Sikoa took Riddle back into the ring. Sikoa went for the Samoan Spike but Riddle blocked. Riddle hit a big knee and ran at Sikoa but Sikoa caught Riddle coming in with the Samoan Spike. Sikoa made the cover for the win.
WINNER: Solo Sikoa in 14:00
-The Usos hit the ring and set up a table. The Usos gave Matt Riddle a One and Done through the table. Sikoa watched from the corner. The Bloodline then posed over the fallen Riddle. Cole asked if the Bloodline would still be together after next week as the Draft starts.
(McDonald’s Analysis: Awesome main event level match from these two guys. They used a ton of stuff here and given the nature of the feud it worked well and didn’t feel forced. There was the typical Bloodline interference, but Riddle fought them off and took the advantage again so it didn’t lead directly to the finish, or even impact it, really. The image of Sikoa tipping the table over and standing there like a zombie back from the dead was an awesome visual and puts over just how awesome Sikoa is. They’ve used that spot with the table tipped over quite a few times and everyone else has needed medical attention or officials or other wrestlers to help them out. Not Solo. He just muscled that table off himself and kept coming. Really good stuff and a good finish out of nowhere. I don’t think the Samoan Spike can be a long term finish for Sikoa as he rises, but for now, it works well. Riddle held up his end of the bargain here and Riddle has looked good every time he’s been put in these situations. I can’t believe this match was announced so late in the day and wasn’t touted all week. This could have fit in well on a PLE and made for a great main event for Smackdown and capped off what was a pretty solid episode of in-ring work.)
