KELLER’S WWE MONEY IN THE BANK REPORT
JULY 1, 2023
LONDON, ENGLAND AT 02 ARENA
AIRED LIVE ON PLE
Commentators: Michael Cole, Wade Barrett
-A video package introduced the event with a James Bond film vibe to it.
-Michael Cole introduced the show as the camera panned the audience. He touted a sellout crowd of 18,885.
(1) BUTCH vs. SHINSUKE NAKAMURA vs. SANTOS ESCOBAR vs. LOGAN PAUL vs. DAMIAN PRIEST vs. L.A. KNIGHT vs. RICOCHET – Men’s Money in the Bank match
Butch came out first, then Ricochet, then Shinsuke, then Escobar (who had a really cool outfit and overall look with war paint on his face), then Damian Priest, then L.A. Knight (who got the biggest reaction so far), and finally Logan Paul. Barrett said if people are upset with Logan getting a free pass into the match, they should make themselves a YouTube phenomenon. The bell rang 12 minutes into the hour. The other six wrestlers attacking Logan and threw him to the floor to start. Logan grabbed a ladder and slid it into the ring. Nakamura stopped him from climbing it. Fans cheered. Escobar, Ricochet, and Butch cornered Priest and wedged a ladder against him and beat on him. Barrett said he’s the biggest physical presence in the show.
Knight entered the empty ring and played to the crowd to a huge roar. Nakamura kicked him. Fans were deflated. Nakamura leaped off the ladder in the corner and kneed Priest’s head. Ricochet, Butch, and Nakamura battled briefly before knocking Ricochet to the floor. Escobar and Paul re-entered the battle in the ring. Logan set up a ladder again at 6:00n and climbed. Ricochet, Butch, Knight, and Nakamura all yanked him down and stomped away at him and shoving him to the floor. Barrett said that could be the theme of the night. Cole wondered what his 24 million YouTube subscribers were thinking.
Logan offered Priest a working agreement because “we’re both tall.” Barrett said they were both ganged up on by the others. Priest went along with it. They set up two tables at ringside next to each other. Logan was all smiles. Ricochet ran and dove under a ladder in the ring onto a crowd below. Knight climbed the ladder. Logan gave him a Russian leg sweep off the ladder. Then he smashed the ladder onto his back and used it to keep Butch out of the ring. Logan snapped Priest’s neck over the top rope, ending their alliance. Logan slingshot himself at Priest, but Priest punched him out of mid-air. Priest then set up a step at ringside and bridged a ladder over it. Priest then was about to suplex Logan onto it, but Butch blocked it. (Why would he do that?)
At 10:00, Nakamura put Priest on the ladder, but as he was about to leap off the apron, Logan swept his legs. Logan then leaped off the ring apron and frog splashed Priest. Logan bounced to the ringside floor, gasping for breath. (Yikes. The impact was pretty sharp and forceful there.) Priest also went down, gasping for air.
Back in the ring, Nakamura set up a ladder. Ricochet intervened. Nakamura knocked Ricochet off a bridged ladder, then fended off L.A. Knight. When he climbed the ladder, Escobar battled with him. Butch then knocked Nakamura down and put Escobar in a sleeper on the bridged ladder. Ricochet broke it up with a springboard 450 splash. Fans chanted “Holy shit!” Then “This is awesome!”
All seven squared off in the ring and then charged at each other. Priest gave Butch a Reckoning and climbed the ladder. Knight back suplexed Priest off the ladder. Logan gave Knight a blockbuster. Ricochet gave Logan a shooting star press. Escobar pulled Ricochet off the ladder and delivered a Phantom Driver.
With everyone else battling at ringside a minute later, Butch climbed a ladder at ringside and landed a moonsault press onto the crowd. Fans popped. Butch climbed the ladder. Logan yanked him off the ladder and climbed the ladder. Fans booed. Ricochet yanked him down. Logan punched Ricochet. Escobar then went after Logan and landed a leaping sidekick.
At 15:00 two ladders were set up mid-ring and a crowd climbed them. It came down to Ricochet battling Logan on one after they tipped over the second ladder. Knight then knocked the ladder over. Ricochet and Logan landed on the top rope, but slipped and struggled to balance. Ricochet went through with the move, but maybe shouldn’t have. Logan, fortunately, tucked at the last second, but grabbed at his head. Two refs ran over to check on him, but medics weren’t sent over to him.
Knight and Butch climbed the tall aldder. Butch snapped Knight’s fingers. Knight fell. Priest met Butch at the top. Butch tried to snap his fingers, but Priest shoved him off the ladder into a ladder leaning in the corner. Knight yanked Priest off the ladder. Fans cheered. Escobar then went after Knight, but Knight slammed him to the mat. He also fended off Nakamura. Fans roared as Knight climbed and began to unfasten the ladder handle. Priest intervened, though, and tossed Knight off the top of the ladder with a Broken Arrow.
Priest climbed the ladder next. No one was within sight. He unfastened it and won. As Priest celebrated, Cole said Judgment Day just got stronger. They showed Logan still down at ringside, but eyes open checking out his bloodied shoulder. He sat up.
WINNER: Priest in 20:00.
(Keller’s Analysis: Priest is a surprise winner, with most picking Knight or Logan Paul to win. He was probably third most likely to win on most people’s list. He’s been losing on TV lately, so his booking lately has been curious. The match was an amazing adventure of dramatic falls and huge crowd heat.) [c]
(2) RONDA ROUSEY & SHAYNA BASZLER vs. LIV MORGAN & RAQUEL RODRIGUEZ – WWE Women’s Tag Team Title match
The bell rang 40 minutes into the hour. Baszler took early control against Mogan, focusing on her previously injured shoulder. Rodriguez hot-tagged in at 5:00 and landed a powerslam to Rousey for a near fall a minute later. Morgan tagged back in and she dove off the top rope onto Baszler. Baszler applied a submission armbra. Rousey knocked Rodriguez down and applied an anklelock on Morgan too. Rodriguez broke it up at 7:00. Morgan kicked Baszler, but grabbed her shoulder in pain. Rousey yanked Rodriguez off the ring apron and threw her into the ringpost. Liv went for Oblivion, but Baszler countered into a German suplex. She then applied a Kirafuda Clutch mid-ring. Morgan stood and tossed Baszler over her shoulder. Baszler tagged in Rousey, but then she attacked Rousey. She mounted her and punched away at her, then put her in a Kirafuda Clutch. Liv looked on in wide-eyed shock. Rousey was out. Baszler left the ring. Morgan crawled over and tagged in Rodriguez, who gave Rousey a Tahana Bomb. Morgan then delivered Oblivion for the win.
WINNERS: Morgan & Rodriguez in 10:00 to capture the WWE Women’s Tag Team Titles.
(Keller’s Analysis: I didn’t see that coming. I wonder if something else is factoring into this, such as Rousey’s availability due to lingering injury, a contract situation, or an opportunity outside of WWE. Maybe they just wanted to turn one of them babyface. This will have to shake out a bit before judging. I was expecting a dominant tag team title run for them, especially after beating the NXT Tag Champs so decisively last month to unify the tag titles. It’s about the weakest way one can become a tag champion – beating an opponent who was knocked out by her partner.)
-Kayla Braxton interviewed Damian Priest backstage who talked about winning the briefcase. He talked about the various singles titles including both world titles, the U.S. Title, and the IC Title. [c]
(3) GUNTHER vs. MATT RIDDLE – Intercontinental Title match
Cole noted that only Honkytonk Man and “Macho Man” Randy Savage have held the IC Title longer than Gunther. The bell rang 59 minutes into the hour. Riddle got in some early offense, but Gunther took control and methodically worked over Riddle for a few minutes. At 5:00 Riddle flipped out of a Gunther back suplex and landed on his feet, but sold an ankle tweak. Gunther then clotheslined him for a believable near fall. Riddle came back with knee strikes and scored a two count. He followed with a running kick and a top rope Floating Bro for a near fall at 6:00.
Gunther chopped Riddle hard in the chest and leaped off the top rope. Riddle caught him in a body leg scissors. Gunther lifted him and powerbombed him followed by a stack pin for a two count. Gunther shifted Riddle into a half crab on his sore ankle. Gunther landed hard slaps to the injured ankle, then applied a leglock to get a tapout win.
WINNER: Gunther in 8:00 to retain the Intercontinental Title.
(Keller’s Analysis: Good match giving Riddle some chances at believable comebacks, but mostly establishing how strong and dominant Gunther is.)
-As Gunther celebrated, Drew McIntyre’s music played. He marched out and stared down Gunther. Cole said, “Drew McIntyre is back!” Barrett said they haven’t seen him since WrestleMania when he lost in a triple threat match to Gunther. He said there was a lot of speculation on his future. Cole said the rumors of Drew’s demise at WWE “are not true.” Drew stared at Gunther mid-ring as fans sang. Gunther palm-faced Drew. Drew headbutted Gunther. Drew then shook the top rope and played to the crowd before signaling for the Claymore. He then connected with it. Then he kipped up and kneeled over Gunther with the IC Title in his hands as his music played again. Cole said his sights are set on that IC Championship. Drew mouthed into the camera, “I’m back!”
-A commercial aired for NXT Great American Bash on Sunday, June 30 on Peacock.
(4) CODY RHODES vs. DOMINIK MYSTERIO (w/Rhea Ripley)
Dominik came out first to big boos. Cody came out to big cheers. The bell rang 19 minutes into the second hour. Dominik avoided Cody at first, then landed the first punch. When Cody wound up for a punch, Dominik rolled to the floor. Cole said he was retreating. Barrett called it a boxing strategy. Cody yanked off his cast. Dominik ran away down the aisle when he saw that. Cody chased him down as Cole said doctors said Cody’s arm was basically healed. Cody dragged Dom back to the ring and stomped away at him in the corner. Cody set up a Crossroads, but Dom slipped free and this time retreated into the crowd. Cody, again, chased him down and dragged him back to the ring. Rhea got in Cody’s face at ringside. Dom unfastened a turnbuckle pad. The ref caught him. Ripley yanked Cody by his ankle off the ring apron and his head hit the ringside steps. Dom dove onto Cody and then threw him into the ringpost. Barrett called it a moment of genius. Cole asked if Dom does anything by himself. Barrett asked why would he. Cole said maybe so could take pride in something he accomplishes.
Dom rammed Cody’s head into the ringside table. He settled into a chinlock mid-ring. The London crowd was singing with “Cody Rhodes” as the lyrics. Dom landed the Three Amigos sequence. Cody came back with a sequence of offense ending with a powerslam. Cody hit a Disaster Kick for a near fall. Ripley distracted Cody on the ring apron. Dom took advantage and set up a 619. Cody blocked it and then twirled Dominic on his shoulders followed by an Alabama Slam. Then he hit a Cody Cutter and played to the crowd. Next he hit Crossroads for the clean win. They cut to a disappointed Ripley at ringside.
WINNER: Cody in 9:00.
(Keller’s Analysis: That’s right in line with what it needed to be. The crowd ate up every minute of it. Cody absolutely should have won clean, which he did. And Dominik should’ve only gotten offense through cheating, which was pretty much the case here.) [c]
-Cole said he can’t imagine what else is going to happen tonight. He then plugged WWE 2K23 as the highest-rated wrestling video game ever. Then out of nowhere, John Cena’s music played and he made a surprise appearance, running to the ring in his jorts. Cole’s voice cracked as he exclaimed, “Can you believe this?!” Barrett said even with his Hollywood successes, he cannot resist being part of a special atmosphere like this. Cena said, “Surprise!” He said he’s actually the one surprised because he’s used to hearing fans sing “John Cena sucks!” He said instead they’re singing the actual “My time is now” lyrics.
He said this is the first premium live event in London in over 20 years. He said as he looks around, he hears the noise and feels the energy. He said he’s asking himself what took him so long to do this again. He said it’s not up to him, it’s up to the decision-makers. He said they don’t necessarily know how to feel about London. “They think this is kind of a hostile environment,” he said. ‘They think you guys are a distraction and sometimes take over the show.” He said they don’t know what they’re talking about because they are the voice and the heartbeat. “You aren’t trying to take over the show; you are the show!” he said. Fans cheered.
“So why am I here?” he said. He said he put his shoes in the ring tonight because the world is watching and he wants the world to know they are underappreciated. He said they know he is big on respect and for twenty years, the fans have earned his respect. Fans chanted, “Thank you, Cena!” He said he wants to bring WrestleMania to London. He said he wants the decision-makers to see and feel and hear what WrestleMania would sound like in London, England. Fans roared. Then Grayson Waller’s music played and he danced and strutted out, mic in hand.
He said he loves everything about Cena, including the jorts. He said he’s watched every one of his movies and his performances move him. He feigned crying. Fans loudly chanted, “Shut the f— up!” He entered the ring and said what disappoints him is that he’s lying to the people. “WrestleMania in England?” he said, smirking. He said the fans cheer the people they’re supposed to dislike and boo the people they’re supposed to like. He said the weather is terrible, too. He said WrestleMania should be somewhere the weather is great with beaches and good looking girls in bikinis. He suggested Australia. Fans booed. Fans chanted, “Wanker! Wanker!”
Waller told Cena he thinks he could get him a spot on the show. He said he knows things haven’t been going well for him lately, as he lost to Austin Theory, Roman Reigns, and the Fiend at his last big shows. He said fans tend to remember the last thing that they saw. Fans chanted, “F— him up, Cena, f— him up!” Waller said they’re crude and then said Cena needs a viral moment. “Let me help you save your career,” Waller said. He pitched “the greatest Grayson Waller Effect of all time at WrestleMania Australia!” Fans booed. Waller said he’s not asking them, he’s asking Cena.
Cena said he wants him to fly to Australia to get a rub from him. Waller agreed. Cena said, “I’m going to pass.” As he began to leave, Waller said no one says no to him. Cena asked him repeat himself. Cena asked if he can enjoy some time with his friends, indicating the crowd. Waller jumped Cena from behind. As Waller gloated, Cena caught him a Attitude Adjustment. Barrett said he can’t believe he’s saying it, but he’s become a big Cena fan.
(Keller’s Analysis: Why do I think Cena wouldn’t have been here if it wasn’t for the massive initial ticket sales for AEW’s All Out event later this summer at Wembley Stadium? Watching Cena get cheered like that is still strange after all the booing during his prime years on top. This was a good rub for Waller if he ultimately was for Cena.) [c]
(5) TRISH STRATUS vs. ZOEY STARK vs. LIV MORGAN vs. ZELINA VEGA vs. IYO SKY vs. BAYLEY – Women’s Money in the Bank match
The match began 53 minutes into the hour. They all fought at ringside in the opening minutes. Zelina was the first to climb a ladder mid-ring at 4:00. Cole said she’s the real dark horse in this match. Bayley yanked her down. Sky and Bayley climbed opposite sides of the ladder. Cole said there is a crack in their alliance showing. Becky knocked them both down and climbed herself. Becky fended off Stark. Trish intervened and head scissored Becky into the corner. She then climbed the ladder, but Becky intervened and then Sky yanked her down.
Vega used Trish as a bridge between two ladders to climb to the taller one. Stark met at the top. Sky yanked Stark down as Becky kicked Sky down. Bayley stopped Becky’s climb. Sky landed a moonsault off a ladder onto a crowd below. Fans chanted “Iyo! Iyo!” Sky was slow to get up. Trish climbed the ladder mid-ring. Cole declared she was going to win. Becky met her at the top and stopped her. Becky battled both Trish and Stark. Zelina leaped off the ladder onto Becky.
At 12:00, Stark rallied. Stark and Trish double-teamed Becky on the floor and put a handcuff on one of her wrists. Lynch made a comeback and began to clear the announce table. Stark recovered and attacked Becky. Fans chanted, “We want tables!” Becky ducked a ladder and threw Trish over the announce table. Then she dropped Stark onto a ladder leaning on the ring. Becky bridged the ladder on the ring apron and announce desk, then put Stark on it. Becky stood on the table. Trish met her up there. They fought. Becky gave Trish a Manhandle Slam onto the ladder. Stark leaped off the ring apron with a neckbreaker on Becky. Everyone was down. “It is a wreck at ringside!” exclaimed Cole. “There is furniture, ladders, and bodies everywhere.”
Stark and Vega climbed opposite sides of the same ladder. Vega gave a Code Red to Stark off the top of the ladder onto another ladder leaning against the middle rope. (That was nasty.) Fans roared and then chanted, “This is awesome!” Cole said he got chills. Barrett said the six women are out of their damn minds. Sky was alone in the ring and climbed the ladder. Bayley tipped it over and Sky hit the top rope. “Bayley just screwed Iyo!” said Cole. Barrett claimed it was just instinct by Bayley and said she had no idea it was Iyo up there. Cole said he’s crazy. Bayley climbed the ladder. Becky met her up top. She then put the handcuffs that Stark and Bayley tried to use against her as a fishhook in Bayley’s mouth to drag her to the mat. They both climbed again, but Sky pulled Becky down. Barrett said he doesn’t think Sky knew it was Bayley who knocked her off the ladder minutes earlier.
Sky handcuffed Bayley and Becky’s wrists together so they couldn’t climb the ladder. Sky then climbed the ladder over the back of Bayley and pulled the ladder down to win.
WINNER: Iyo Sky in 18:00.
(Keller’s Analysis: A wild and overall good MITB ladder match. That Stark bump on the Code Red felt more risky than it was worth. The finish was clever and a fun way for Iyo to override Bayley’s selfishness to win for herself.)
-They replayed Priest’s MITB win earlier and Cole noted he could even cash in tonight. [c]

(6) SETH ROLLINS vs. FINN BALOR – WWE World Hvt. Title match
Balor came out first. Seth came out and the fans sang for a long time. The bell rang 25 minutes into the hour. Balor methodically battered Seth, focusing on his ribs, for over five minutes. Seth made several brief comebacks. Balor went for a Coup de Grace at 8:00, but Seth moved. Balor rolled up Seth for a near fall. Seth delivered an enzuigiri to Balor and then a Pedigree. Both were down and slow to get up. Seth draped his arm over Balor’s chest. Balor raised his shoulder.
Priest walked out with the briefcase and gazed into the ring. Seth stood and eyed him. Balor schoolboyed Seth for a two count. Seth fired back with a superkick and then approached Priest at ringside. Seth said he has eyes on the back of his head. Priest sat on a chair and smiled calmly. Seth had more words for him. Balor nailed Seth with a surprise running dropkick, sending Seth hard into the barricade. He leaped off the announce desk with Coup de Grace followed by a leap off the steps with another. Cole wondered if Priest will cash in against Balor if Balor wins.
Back in the ring, Balor dropkicked Seth into the corner and then tried for another Coup de Grace. Priest stood. Balor eyed him briefly and then leaped. Seth avoided it and hit a Stomp for the win. Cole said a few weeks ago, Balor came out and screwed up Priest’s opportunity to beat Rollins, so it happened again with the roles reversed.
Balor yelled at Priest angrily afterward as Seth’s music played.
WINNER: Rollins in 12:00 to retain the WWE World Hvt. Title.
(Keller’s Analysis: The match was just sorta okay. Nothing bad, but it felt like a comedown after the ladder match and before the final match.)
-Cole hyped the Grayson Waller effect live from MSG next Friday featuring Edge as his guest. A video aired on Edge’s career.
-Kayla Braxton interviewed Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn in their luxury box. KO said it’s great to be in London. Sami said tonight is the night that Reigns gets exactly what he’s got coming to him.

(7) THE USOS vs. ROMAN REIGNS & SOLO SIKOA
The Usos came out first. Then Reigns and Solo with Heyman. Reigns had a dead serious expression. They had a mid-ring staredown. Fans chanted “F— you, Roman!” right before the bell rang. The Usos were all smiles. The bell rang two minutes into the hour. Solo overpowered Jimmy early. The Usos came back and got in some offense. Solo turned and glared at Roman, who had his hand extended for a tag, and after ten tense seconds, Solo tagged him in. Cole said you have to question where the loyalty is for Solo after Smackdown last night. Barrett disagreed, saying Solo proved he will put his body on the line to protect Reigns at all costs.
Reigns entered and eyed Jey. Jey tore off his shirt and threw it aside. They circled each other and locked up. Reigns applied a side headlock and barked at the crowd. Reigns yelled at Jimmy on the ring apron, “The only one.” He shoved him. Jey then went after Reigns, but Reigns took him down with an elbow block to his chest.
Heyman shouted encouraging words to Reigns. Reigns and Jey circled each other again and locked up. Reigns shoved Jey into the corner and punched away at him. As Solo took over against Jimmy in the corner, Reigns sat on the edge of the ring and told Heyman that the Usos are idiots. Cole said Reigns only cares about himself and treats people poorly, so why does he expect people to react differently to him. Solo landed a running hip attack on Jimmy.
Solo settled into a nerve hold. The Usos eventually rallied at 20:00. Jey dove through the ropes and tackles Solo. Cole said Reigns is watching the match crumble before his eyes. When Jey dove through the ropes at Reigns, Reigns punched him out of mid-air. Back in the ring, he landed a Superman Punch. He shook the ropes and got wide-eyed looking out at the audience. Cole began writing off the Usos, speaking about their “valiant effort.” Jimmy Uso tagged himself in. Both Usos speared a charging Reigns and Jimmy made the cover. Solo broke up the cover before the third count.
Both teams squared off again, paused, and then went at it. Jey rammed Solo into the ringpost. Jimmy and Reigns exchanged punches. Reigns went for a Superman Punch but just glanced Jimmy with the side of his elbow, as noted by the announcers. Reigns scored a near fall. Reigns buried his hands in his arms in frustration, then told the fans he’s tired of them. “Shut up, now!” he said.
When Reigns turned around, Jimmy caught him with two superkicks. He went for a top rope splash, but Reigns grabbed him as he landed and applied a guillotine. Reigns caught Jimmy’s kick and Jimmy shoved the Reigns into the ref against the ropes. The ref tumbled to the floor, groaning in pain and clutching his inner thigh. The Usos caught Reigns with the 1D. Jey made the cover. Cole said, “Dammit, Reigns is going to survive again! Roman Reigns, with the damnedest luck.”
The Usos stood and stood on opposite top turnbuckles. Solo shoved Jimmy off balance. Reigns stood and ducked Jey. Solo and Reigns each gave the Usos uranages at the same time. Solo then gave Jimmy the Samoan Spike. Reigns then speared Jimmy as Solo gave him another spear. Solo dragged Jimmy and stacked him on Jey. Fans chanted “Bullshit!” The ref crawled back in as Reigns made the cover and counted. The Usos kicked out just before three. The crowd exploded with cheers. Reigns got wide-eyed. “The Usos kicked out!” exclaimed Cole.
Solo pounded away at Jey and encouraged Reigns to regroup and get back after the Usos. Solo threw Jimmy into the ringside steps at 28:00. Solo cleared the announce desk as Reigns shouted encouragement. Solo superkicked Jimmy onto the desk. He then stood on the barricade. He eyed Roman, let out a big roar, and leaped. Jimmy moved. Solo crashed onto the table, which collapsed underneath him. Back in the ring, Jey superkicked Reigns. Reigns caught him with a quick spear. Jey kicked out. Reigns again looked shocked and dismayed. Fans chanted “Uso! Uso!” A replay showed a low blow by Jey while he was under. Cole said he was suffering some of his own medicine. Cole said “The end of the Civil War and the good guys won. The mystique, the aura, the invincibility surrounding Roman Reigns is gone!” Barrett wondered where Reigns and The Bloodline goes from there.
The Usos threw superkicks at Reigns and Solo. Jey then leaped off the top rope with a frog splash for a three count.
WINNERS: The Usos in 31:00.
(Keller’s Analysis: A different kind of match than the ladder match adrenaline rushes, and they certainly paced each other more deliberately early. The second half really picked up and they pulled the crowd even more into the drama and got the reactions every step of the way that wrestlers dream of. Really effectively executed. They emphasized how long it had been since Reigns had been pinned in any situation, so the finish with Jey scoring the win was framed to seem very significant.)
