WWE SMACKDOWN TV REPORT
FEBRUARY 24, 2023
EVANSVILLE, IN AT FORD CENTER
AIRED ON FOX
REPORT BY ALEX McDONALD, PWTORCH CONTRIBUTOR
Announcers: Michael Cole, Wade Barrett
[HOUR ONE]
-The show opened with a video recap of the main event between Roman Reigns and Sami Zayn at Elimination Chamber last Saturday. The video then shifted to Zayn’s appearance on Raw this past Monday.
-Kayla Braxton was in the back. She said she’s awaiting Jimmy Uso. Jimmy appeared. Kayla asked if Jimmy had spoken to Jey. Jimmy said he hadn’t. Jimmy said he called and texted and told Jey that he could meet Jimmy in the ring tonight to talk to him. Jimmy walked off.
-Braun Strowman’s music played and he made his entrance with Ricochet and Mad Cap Moss in tow. Wade Barrett questioned Moss’ fit with the group.
-Imperium made their entrance next. Michael Cole mentioned that Imperium has had run-ins with everyone on the opposite team.
(1) BRAUN STROWMAN, RICOCHET, & MADCAP MOSS vs. IMPERIUM (Gunther, Ludwig Kaiser, & Giovanni Vinci)
Moss started against Vinci. They locked up and Vinci took the advantage. Vinci took Moss down. Moss escaped Vinci and ran the ropes. He took Vinci down with a shoulder tackle and tagged in Ricochet. Ricochet came off the top rope and got a near fall. Ricochet stayed on the attack and landed a standing moonsault for another near fall. Ricochet went to tag but Vinci held him back. Vinci then took Ricochet down with a big clothesline and tagged in Kaiser. Kaiser pounded on Ricochet. Ricochet landed a few punches but Kaiser kicked him. Ricochet came off the ropes and Kaiser took him down. Strowman entered the ring and distracted the ref. Imperium triple teamed Ricochet and took him down on the outside. [c]
Kaiser had Ricochet down in an armbar. Ricochet fought up and landed shots on Kaiser. Kaiser landed a couple of punches but Ricochet continued to fight back. Ricochet landed a big knee but Kaiser took him down and made the cover for a near fall. Gunther tagged in and knocked Ricochct down. Drew McIntyre appeared on the stage and stared Gunther down. Gunther had Ricochet propped against the ropes and delivered a chop as he stared down McIntyre. Vinci tagged in and hit a short arm shoulder tackle on Ricochet. He went for a second but Ricochet flipped free and tagged in Strowman. Strowman took down both Kaiser and Vinci and then stared down Gunther. Vinci attacked Strowman from behind but Strowman tossed Kaiser and Vinci to the outside. Gunther was waiting when Strowman turned around. Gunther landed a chop and took Strowman down with a chop block. Moss tagged in and attacked Gunther. Moss took control then was distracted by Kaiser. Gunther took Moss down with a huge clothesline then hit the powerbomb and made the cover for the win.
WINNER: Imperium in 11:00
-Imperium posed in the ring. McIntyre looked on and started to remove his jacket. The Viking Raiders ran down the ramp and took out McIntyre. They pounded on him but Sheamus ran down the ramp to help. The Raiders recovered and took Sheamus down. Strowman came around the corner and took out the Viking Raiders. Ricochet dove over the top rope and took out the Raiders. McIntyre and Sheamus then tossed the Viking Raiders over the barricade into the timekeeper’s area. The babyfaces stood on the four corners of the ring and celebrated.
(McDonald’s Analysis: Interesting with McIntyre there. I assume it’s to set up something with them at Wrestlemania but the Viking Raiders involvement makes it seem like that isn’t over yet, for some reason. The match was fine but nothing out of the ordinary. No surprise that Moss did the job. He also was barely in the match and was disposed of super quickly. It’s very clear where he is on the pecking order, especially considering he didn’t even get to pose with the faces at the end. Could this be leading to some sort of turn for Moss? No one will care, but I guess it’s worth trying.)
-Kayla welcomed Rey Mysterio in the back. Mysterio said he was going to put an end to Karrion Kross. Santos Escobar appeared. He said the one thing he and his family values, is respect. Escobar said that he got the ultimate sign of respect from Mysterio when he got his mask. Escobar said he’s going to show everyone how much he appreciated it. Mysterio said the feeling is mutual. Dominik Mysterio appeared. He mentioned that Escobar shouldn’t hang around with Mysterio. Escobar said he would teach Dominik a lesson. Dominik said that in prison, people who don’t back up what they say, get dealt with. Escobar started toward Dominik but Rhea Ripley stepped between them. Dominik hung behind her and smiled. Dominik wished Mysterio luck and they walked off. Escobar told Mysterio not to let it bother him since he knows who he is. Mysterio said he can’t let it go because it’s his son.
(McDonald’s Analysis: I really like Escobar in this respect role, but I don’t know if now is the right time for him to be a face. I guess it makes sense since the IC champion is Gunther, who is a firm heel, but honestly, I’d rather see Escobar feud with Mysterio instead. Escobar would have been a good person to retire Mysterio if the option of Dominik wasn’t present, and obvious.)
-Solo Sikoa and Jimmy were in the locker room with Paul Heyman. Jimmy said things have been crazy since the Royal Rumble. Jimmy said he knew Jey would be there to help defend the titles a couple of weeks ago. Jimmy said since Elimination Chamber, things have been different. Jimmy said he thinks Jey may have been spooked by the Sami Zayn thing. Heyman interjected and said that Sikoa should stay in the back later. He said that Jimmy should deal with Jey twin to twin on his own, later tonight. Jimmy said “yeet”.
(McDonald’s Analysis: This was really solid. I don’t know what Heyman is implying, but I am interested in seeing the interaction between Jey and Jimmy. It’s a good hook for the show and it will be an interesting moment for the two. They’ve spent so much time as a focus as wrestlers and in the background, but they haven’t had a ton of one on one interaction with each other. It’s odd to say that, but it is true. I wonder if Heyman and Sikoa will get involved anyway.)
-L.A. Knight made his entrance. He grabbed a mic. Knight said everyone in the back has been talking about Wrestlemania moments. Knight said he didn’t come for a Mania moment, he came to win titles and make money, but he has to go to Mania to do that. Knight said he won’t be having a Mania moment. He said you can’t have an L.A. Mania without L.A. Knight. Knight then said he’s going to give Mania an L.A. Knight moment. The crowd chanted “yeah” with him.
-The New Day’s music played and they appeared on the stage. Kofi Kingston laughed. He mocked Knight’s Mania moment comment. Kingston said that Knight doesn’t know how it works because he’s only been on the roster for two and a half months. Kingston asked who Knight thought he was. Knight said he didn’t know he invited the Nerd Day out. He said if they weren’t wasting time playing video games, they would know how big of a star Knight is. Xavier Woods said that being nerds has made them a ton of money. Woods made fun of Knight’s jacket, then mentioned Kingston’s Mania moment from a few years ago. Knight said that he’s going to create a circumstance that’s advantageous for him. He then asked Kingston how Kofimania worked out for him. Kingston said it worked out well as he fought in the ring and behind the scenes. Kingston said he won’t wait to shut Knight up tonight. Knight laughed. The crowd chanted “New Day rocks”. Knight asked if that was a challenge from Kingston. Kingston mocked Knights “yeah”. Woods asked Adam Pearce, who’s great at his job, to send out a ref so they can have the match. A ref came down and Kingston removed his coat. [c]
(2) L.A. KNIGHT vs. KOFI KINGSTON (w/ Xavier Woods)
Knight was in control of Kingston as they joined the match in progress after the break. Kingston shot Knight off the ropes but Knight took him down with a shoulder tackle. Knight ran the ropes and Kingston leapfrogged him then took him down with a dropkick. Kingston made the cover for a near fall. Knight sent Kingston into the corner. Knight charged but Kingston caught him with a boot. Kingston went to the top rope and hit a splash on Knight’s back. Kingston got another near fall. Kingston dropped to the outside and danced with Woods. Kingston hit a kick on Knight through the ropes then Kingston went to the top rope. Kingston took Knight out with a crossbody and got another near fall. Kingston worked on Knight’s arm. Knight got to his feet and backed Kingston into the ropes. Knight landed an elbow then sent Kingston off the ropes. Knight hit a spin around elbow and took Kingston down. Knight pounded away on Kingston. Kingston recovered and fought back but Knight answered with a powerslam for a near fall. Knight took Kingston to the corner and pounded on him Knight attempted a neckbreaker but Kingston grabbed the top rope. Kingston hit a series of splashes in the corners. He went for a third but Knight caught him and dropped him face first into the top turnbuckle. Kingston rolled to the outside to recover. [c]
Knight was still in control as Kingston tried to fight back. Knight sent Kingston to the corner but Kingston leapt onto the second rope and came off with a dropkick. Woods cheered Kingston on. Kingston went after Knight but Knight pulled Kingston to the outside. Woods checked on Kingston. Knight dropped to the outside and got in Woods’ face. He told Woods to hit him and get Kingston disqualified. Knight taunted Woods and told him to play his trombone. Knight tossed Kingston into the ring and followed him in. Knight hit an elbow drop and stayed on the attack. He choked Kingston with the middle rope in front of Woods. Knight went to the apron and hit Kingston with a running knee. Knight hit a slingshot shoulder tackle and covered Kingston for a near fall. Knight came off the ropes but Kingston caught him coming in with a big knee. The crowd cheered Kingston on. Knight missed with a punch and Kingston took him down with a punch of his own. Kingston hit a heel kick. Knight recovered and lifted Kingston but Kingston reversed into a roll up for a two count. Kingston took the advantage and took Knight down. Kingston hit a Boom Drop then went for Trouble in Paradise but Knight moved and delivered a modified back suplex for a close near fall. Knight dropped to the outside and took out Woods. Kingston came over the top rope and took out Knight with a dive. Kingston climbed to the top rope and Knight entered the ring and cut Kingston off. Knight went to the top himself. Woods played the trombone and distracted Knight. Kingston crotched Knight on the top rope. Kingston then hit Trouble in Paradise and covered Knight for the win.
WINNER: Kofi Kingston in 13:00
-The New Day celebrated in the ring.
(McDonald’s Analysis: Seriously? Seriously? That’s the decision they made and that’s the finish they went with? The New Day is to the point where they’re so annoying, anything the heels say about them actually rings true. That was especially the case tonight as everything Knight said was dead on. The best part of the match was when he taunted Woods at ringside and told him to play the trombone. Then, to make it even better, he took out the annoying Woods when he played said trombone, later on. All of that was good stuff. The match was actually really solid and that’s the biggest part of the reason I wish New Day would break up. They can both work and they both could be used in the midcard to give wins to guys like Knight to boost other people in the singles ranks. And that’s the biggest problem with this match. There is absolutely zero reason for Kingston to beat Knight at this point in their careers. Silly decision.)
-Cole and Barrett sat ringside. Cole mentioned that Rhea Ripley and Charlotte Flair will be face to face tonight. He then threw to a video package. The package showed Ripley’s win at the Women’s Royal Rumble. After that, the video showed Ripley’s choice of Charlotte and her challenge to Charlotte. The video then shifted to Charlotte’s sit down interview with Cole a couple of weeks ago. They showed a graphic Rhea Ripley and Charlotte at Wrestlemania. Cole then hyped their face to face segment for after the break. [c]
-Charlotte made her entrance. Charlotte posed in the ring and then took the mic. She said it’s thirty-five days until Wrestlemania. She said she knows that Ripley likes to run her mouth on Raw, so she wants to see what Ripley will say to her face. Charlotte told Ripley to come out. She didn’t. Charlotte said it’s ok to be scared and have second thoughts about facing her.
[HOUR TWO]
-Dominik appeared on the stage and called Charlotte “queenie”. Dominik asked if he could call her that. Charlotte laughed and said it’s cute that Dominik can take orders. Charlotte told Dominik to go get his “Mami”. Dominik said that Charlotte sounded nervous because the hottest thing in WWE is Rhea “bloody” Ripley. Charlotte smiled. Dominik said that Charlotte should smile more often because she’s beautiful. Dominik said that his girl, is strong. He said Ripley almost breaks his back when she hugs him. Charlotte said that she has her own Latin man at home and he has a much thicker accent then Dominik. Dominik then said that he and Charlotte have a lot in common. Dominik said they have both surpassed their fathers, but their fathers won’t admit it. The crowd booed. Dominik said his father was worse. He called his father a dead beat and said his father messed him up. Dominik then said when Ripley beats Charlotte at Mania, she’ll know her father was right, she’s just not good enough. Charlotte said that unlike Dominik, she loves her father. Charlotte then wished Ric Flair a happy early birthday. Charlotte said if her dad was there, she’d kick Dominik’s butt. Charlotte motioned toward Dominik.
-Rhea Ripley’s music played and she made her way down the ramp. Dominik opened the ropes for her and Ripley entered the ring. Ripley got in Charlotte’s face but Dominik pulled her back towards the ropes. Charlotte held up the title and Ripley got back in Charlotte’s face. Dominik ushered her away again. Dominik and Ripley exited the ring. Charlotte posed with the title in the ring.
(McDonald’s Analysis: That’s not what I was expecting out of this segment, at all. With that said, I actually really liked this and thought it turned out great. Dominik is such a smarmy character and his interaction with Charlotte detailing his perceived similarities with them was a nice touch. I get that Charlotte isn’t fighting Dominik, so maybe it wasn’t the best idea, but I thought for the circumstance, it worked. Charlotte and Ripley have a lot of time between now and Mania. They have many more segments to go between now and then. We can get an actual face to face promo and encounter down the line. I will say, after the two segments tonight, I’m excited to have Dominik and Ripley join the Smackdown family so I can cover them on Friday nights.)
-Cole and Barrett were at ringside. Cole said that Money in the Bank sold out instantly. Cole then announced they have limited seats on sale now for Wrestlemania. Then Cole threw to a graphic of a Twitter battle between Shayna Baszler and Natalya.
-Natalya made her entrance with Tegan Nox in tow. Cole threw to a video from earlier today. The video showed Adam Pearce and Natalya talking about the match tonight. Natalya found out she was cleared to compete. Pearce warned her about Ronda Rousey being with Shayna Baszler. Tegan Nox was in the background and offered to accompany Natalya. Natalya accepted, and therefore, accepted the match against Baszler. [c]
-They showed footage of Sami Zayn in Montreal. Cole said we can watch the video on WWE’s YouTube channel.
-Shayna Baszler made her entrance with Ronda Rousey at her side.
(3) NATALYA (w/ Tegan Nox) vs. SHAYNA BASZLER (w/ Ronda Rousey)
Natalya went after Baszler with right hands. Baszler ducked and went to the apron. Natalya stayed on her and slammed Baszler into the turnbuckle face first. Natalya stayed on Baszler but Baszler countered and took Natalya down. Baszler worked on Natalya’s arm. Rousey smirked at ringside. Natalya fought up but Baszler hit a big kick to slow her down. Baszler pulled her knee pad down. Rousey cheered Baszler on from ringside. Baszler charged Natalya and Natalya countered into a rollup. Natalya stayed on the attack and hit a German suplex followed by a discus clothesline for a near fall. Natalya went for a Sharpshooter but Baszler kicked Natalya off. Baszler dropped to the outside and Natalya hit her with a baseball slide. Natalya put Baszler back in the ring. Natalya climbed to the apron but was distracted by Rousey. Baszler hit a big knee. Baszler dragged Natalya into the center of the ring and locked on an armbar. Natalya tapped.
WINNER: Shayna Baszler in 4:00
-Baszler knocked Tegan Nox down. Rousey entered the ring and her and Baszler cornered Natalya. Nox hit the ring and took down Rousey. Baszler and Rousey exited the ring. Rousey asked who Nox was. Baszler informed her, but said they didn’t need to worry about her.
-Cole hyped Wrestlemania being five weeks away. They then showed the Seth Rollins and Becky Lynch Wrestlemania commercial. [c]
-The Firefly Fun House music played as the graphic was shown on the screen. We then went to the Fun House. The Fun House turned red. The TV flashed and arms were shown playing with Undertaker action figures. They then showed Bray Wyatt watching himself on TV delivering a promo. After that, Bobby Lashley’s promo from Monday was shown with sound effects. Wyatt then welcomed us to Fun House News. Ramblin’ Rabbit was in a suit. Wyatt asked who opened the door, then said it’s time for the weather. Uncle Howdy said “I am all of us”. Then it shifted to a game show called “Can You Keep a Secret?”. Wyatt appeared in a blonde wig and asked if you can. The announcer repeated the “can you keep a secret line” three times. The Fun House door was open and images flashed inside. Wyatt was then in a mask and asked “if I tell you a secret, can you keep it?”
(McDonald’s Analysis: That was the strangest, most confusing, Firefly Fun House I’ve ever seen. I have no idea what to say about that. Can anyone imagine Bobby Lashley, of all people, in this world? I still want to know why Uncle Howdy and Wyatt are aligned now and why Howdy is, all of a sudden, a babyface. I was on board with this for a bit, but now, I don’t know. It’s to the point where it doesn’t feel like missing chapters, but instead a missing book in the middle of all this. I need someone to explain it to me because clearly, I haven’t done a good enough job paying attention to get it.)
-Jimmy and Sikoa were shown in the locker room again with Heyman. Jimmy wondered if he and Jey could work things out, personally. Heyman leaned between them. Heyman said that Roman Reigns will be on Smackdown next week. Heyman told Jimmy to handle Jey tonight, or Reigns will handle him next week, personally.
-They showed a graphic for Mysterio against Karrion Kross. Cole hyped the match for after the break. [c]
-Rey Mysterio made his entrance.
-Karrion Kross made his entrance with Scarlett.
(4) REY MYSTERIO vs. KARRION KROSS (w/ Scarlett)
Mysterio kicked at Kross’ legs. Kross pushed Mysterio aside but Mysterio took him down with a hurricanrana. Kross charged and Mysterio pulled down the rope and Kross fell to the outside. Mysterio hit a 619 threw the ropes and hit Kross in the back of the head. Kross was reeling. Mysterio came over the top rope and took down Kross with a dive. Mysterio stood tall. [c]
Mysterio punched at the gut of Kross. Mysterio came off the ropes but Kross took him down with a right hand. Kross measured Mysterio and charged him in the corner. Mysterio lifted a boot but Kross caught it. He went for a powerbomb but Mysterio got out. Mysterio went to the top rope and came off with a senton. Kross recovered and threw Mysterio across the ring to the outside under the middle rope. Kross followed Mysterio to the outside. Kross lifted Mysterio to his shoulders and brought Mysterio down on his knee. Kross tossed Mysterio back into the ring and followed him in. The crowd cheered for Mysterio. Kross lifted Mysterio to his shoulders again. Kross took Mysterio to the corner and climbed to the second rope. Mysterio fought back with elbows. Mysterio got on the top rope and turned around into a hurricanrana off the top. Mysterio made the cover for a near fall. Mysterio ran the ropes and went for a tornado DDT but Kross countered. Mysterio countered Kross back into a 619 position. Scarlett hit the ring and caused a slight distraction. Scarlett fell down and Mysterio went for a 619. Dominik Mysterio appeared and caught Mysterio. Dominik taunted Mysterio. Kross hit a Kross Hammer then locked on the Kross Jacket for the win.
WINNER: Karrion Kross in 9:00
-Dominik entered the ring and stood over Mysterio. Dominik told Mysterio to hit him. He told Mysterio to get up and be a man. Dominik told Mysterio to do something about it. Dominik asked if Mysterio was going to hit him. Dominik shoved Mysterio repeatedly. Mysterio finally got in Dominik’s face. Mysterio asked if Dominik wanted to get punched. Dominik told him to be a man and do it. Mysterio backed off. Dominik pulled Mysterio back and told him to do it. Mysterio turned, kicked the bottom rope and walked off. Cole said you have to applaud Mysterio’s restraint.
(McDonald’s Analysis: Cool, a distraction finish. Why can’t we have an actual end to this feud? If they’re not planning anything for Mania with these two, then why keep this going this way? They’ve now traded fluke wins which doesn’t do anything for either guy. The segment at the end with Dominik was good stuff. They’re really making the most of having Dominik on this show, aren’t they? Anyways, I’m interested in this. I’ve wanted Rey to hit Dominik for a couple of years now, so I can’t wait for him to finally do it.)
-Jimmy was in the back playing on his phone. He then put his phone down and walked down the hallway toward the arena. [c]
-They showed a graphic for Reigns’ appearance next week. They then hyped a match between Liv Morgan and Rhea Ripley, as well as a tag team match with Rousey and Baszler against Nox and Natalya.
-Jimmy Uso made his entrance. He entered the ring and grabbed a mic. Jimmy said if Jey isn’t in the building, he’s watching somewhere. Jimmy said from brother to brother, he knows he’s torn. He said he knows Jey is hurt. Jimmy said when Jey is hurt he his hurt, too. Jimmy said he’ll always be there for him but he needs Jey to be there now. Jimmy said he knows there’s issues. Jimmy said they have a Sami Zayn problem and a Kevin Owens problem. He said he knows Jey has problems with the Tribal Chief, but he can’t do this alone.
-Sami Zayn entered the ring in a hoodie. He removed the hood and said he needed to talk to Jimmy. Zayn said Jimmy was a brother to him. Zayn asked if Jimmy remembered when they were dogs. Zayn said that when Jey didn’t trust him, Jimmy did. Zayn asked if Jimmy remembered when he made Zayn an honorary Uce. Zayn said without Jimmy, there’s no Honorary Uce and there’s no Ucey. Zayn said when it came down to it, Jimmy took him down with no hesitancy. Zayn said it hurt.
-Jimmy said that Zayn is selfish. He said Zayn wants to blame him even though Zayn made the choice. Jimmy said that Zayn stepped on him and Jey. Jimmy said Zayn made the choice and he did what he had to do. Jimmy said that family doesn’t turn on each other. Zayn said that family doesn’t make you jump through hoops to prove yourself. He said family doesn’t manipulate you like Reigns does to Jimmy and Jey. Zayn said the Bloodline isn’t about Reigns. Zayn said he’s going to make sure the Bloodline comes crashing down. Zayn said that he knows that Jimmy knows it’s true and that he sees a way out for him.
-Jey appeared in the stands. Zayn looked up at him and Jimmy attacked. Jimmy beat down Zayn. Jimmy looked over at Jey. Sami recovered and landed a Helluva Kick to take down Jimmy. Jey stayed in the stands. Solo Sikoa came down the ramp and Zayn ducked out of the ring. Zayn stopped and looked over to Jey. They locked eyes. Zayn then left over the opposite barricade through the crowd.
(McDonald’s Analysis: That’s closer to what I’ve wanted to hear from Zayn but it’s still not perfect. This was better and a step in the right direction, though. Not everybody is going to like this segment and feel fulfilled by it, but I thought it was another great step forward. Jimmy made some good points about Zayn putting he and Jey in an awkward spot. I’m glad we got to hear that from Jimmy. For the first time, he seems like more than a goon. He was put in a position where he had to choose and he chose the known, his family, instead of Zayn. He liked Zayn, or does like Zayn, but at the end of the day, Zayn isn’t family. Jimmy had to make that choice and in his mind, it wasn’t right that Zayn forced him to do that. That’s actually excellent justification for Jimmy’s actions in this situation, thus far. The attack on Zayn tonight was a little odd, though. I don’t know if we necessarily needed that, but it is what it is. Anyway, I also really liked the look that Jey and Zayn exchanged. I was glad that they replayed it and focused on it also. I’ve said this before, but I would much rather see Jey and Zayn against Solo and Jimmy. Jey is a better friend than Kevin Owens and it’s more logical for that to be the direction going forward. I know if you do that, you run the risk of losing the Jey turning on Reigns moment, but I don’t know if that’s necessarily true. It actually might be possible to have both in all of this. It’s a shame the rest of the Bloodline can’t side with Jey as he dethrones Reigns. I would much prefer that to Dusty Rhodes’ son.)
