SPOTLIGHTED PODCAST ALERT (YOUR ARTICLE BEGINS A FEW INCHES DOWN)...

The character of Satnam Singh was reportedly designed to help build the AEW company brand in India.

The Wrestling Observer is reporting that the creation of the Singh act had a lot to do with with WarnerMedia/Discovery merger and was designed to grow AEW in India. Singh made his debut on this week’s episode of AEW Dynamite. After Samoa Joe won the ROH World Television Championship in the main event against Minoru Suzuki, the lights went out in the arena. When they came back on Singh was standing behind Joe in the ring. Singh attacked Joe and joined forces with Jay Lethal and Sonjay Dutt.

The report indicates that Tony Khan wanted to construct and execute an angle that would connect with the Indian fanbase shortly after the Discovery merger. AEW currently airs on Euro-sport India, a Discovery owned property. In addition, it was noted that Singh will be managed by Dutt moving forward and that the act will be pushed to continue to promote the company in the India market.

Joe made his AEW last week on Dynamite in an Owen Hart Foundation Tournament qualifying match against Max Caster. Joe also made a surprise appearance on the ROH Supercard of Honor PPV event and will now work for both promotions.

Singh was the first India-born basketball player to get drafted into the NBA. Singh was drafted by the Dallas Mavericks in 2015, but never saw court time during his tenure with the team. In September of last year, Singh joined the Cody Rhodes and QT Marshall-run wrestling school, The Nightmare Factory.
