•Latest TV Highlights

Monday Night Raw

  • Seth Rollins opened Raw this week and said over the last seven years he’s done a lot in the ring, but he’s never felt the way he did last week. He was defenseless in the ring being mugged by five dudes, and then “the living embodiment of a nightmare” was up in his face. He said he had no fight left in him and it was all he could do to just close his eyes and hope it’s a bad dream. He said at Hell in a Cell he will do what he always does, “survive and prevail.” Braun Strowman interrupted upset that Seth said he hoped he doesn’t get a rematch for the Universal Title. Seth corrected him saying he didn’t say that, he just has a lot on his plate including Bray Wyatt in two weeks and the winner of the Fatal Five-Way match next week in championship matches. Seth then challenged Braun to a match tonight. The match was made official and was the main event of Raw. In the match, Braun was in control when The Fiend’s music played. Wyatt appeared and gave Strowman a Mandible Claw. Strowman got back up and Wyatt gave him another Mandible Claw. Seth sat in the corner of the ring frozen with fear as the Fiend approached him. The Fiend stared at a terrified Rollins as the show ended.
  • Rey Mysterio won a Fatal Five-Way match to earn a Universal Title match next week on the “season premiere” of Raw. Throughout the show, the five competitors gave brief interviews teasing the match. Mysterio talked about how he almost retired a few weeks ago and thanked his son Dominic for talking him through his moment of doubt and dedicated the upcoming match to him. The match featured Ricochet, Shinsuke Nakamura, Robert Roode, A.J. Styles, and Rey Mysterio. Ricochet was eliminated first by Nakamura after a Kinsasha. Styles would eliminate Nakamura after attempting to hit a Phenomenal Forearm on Roode, who moved out of the way. Nakamura wasn’t so lucky. Styles was then eliminated by Roode after a Glorious DDT and Mysterio would pin Roode after a 619 and a Springboard Splash for the three count.

Smackdown

  • Erick Rowan opened Smackdown to discuss the recent events involving himself, Luke Harper, Daniel Bryan, and Roman Reigns. Rowan said he created violence that commands respect. People like to belittle him by calling him a big redwood. It reminds him of a saying, “Might makes right” and the entire Smackdown locker room knows he’s right. Daniel Bryan interrupted dressed to wrestle. He walked to the ring and said he Rowan feels he’s right and wants respect, “Fight me right now” and dropped the microphone. An official was immediately available to make the match official and the bell rang. Near the end of the match, Luke Harper appeared. Bryan dove through the ropes to take care of Harper, who crashed into the announce table, but immediately stood up. Bryan backed up to the ring while looking at Harper, but Rowan was inside the ring and picked Bryan up by his beard. Rowan then attempted a claw slam, picking Bryan up over the ropes and slamming him back into the ring. Bryans foot got caught between the top and middle ropes and he took a nasty fall. The official had to help Bryan untangle his foot and after he was freed, Rowan hit him with another Claw Slam for the win. After the match Harper and Rowan attacked Bryan until Roman Reigns came out to break up the attack. Bryan and Reigns would eventually hold the ring. Bryan grabbed a microphone and asked the fans if they want to see him and Roman team up and attack “their disrespecting asses.” The fans chanted yes and we would be informed later in the night that this tag team match was made official for Hell in a Cell.
  • Shane McMahon invited Kevin Owens to Smackdown to try and work out Owens’ lawsuit without taking it to court. Shane came out with a team of attorneys, then invited Owens out. Shane offered Owens a “clean slate” saying he would be rehired and his $100,000 fine would be dropped. He would do this if Owens dropped the lawsuit. Shane threatened Owens saying that court can be draining and he can drag it out for years with appeal after appeal which is bad for Owens’ family. Owens responded calling Shane an idiot and that what he really wants is Shane’s ass fired because he doesn’t belong in a locker room with Owens. Owens said he wanted one final match, loser leaves WWE. Shane asked what the catch was and Owens responded he wants a ladder match with their fates hanging over their heads. Owens’ music played and it appeared Shane accepted, but his microphone was turned off so we only saw the visual of Shane accepting.

NXT

  • Matt Riddle and Killian Dane main evented the USA Network hour of NXT this week in a Street Fight to crown a new number one contender for the NXT Championship. The match went over twenty minutes. Killian Dane tackled Riddle through a wall, Riddle hit a senton on Dane who was laying across a table. Riddle hit Dane with a top rope power bomb, then through a chair to Dane who caught it just in time for Riddle to hit him with a running knee strike right through the chair. Killian Dane would eventually tap out to the Fujiwara Arm Bar. After Riddle won, it was announced that Riddle would take on Cole next week on the first two hour episode of NXT on USA. Cole came out after the match to talk trash to Riddle, who quickly grabbed Cole and locked in the Fujiwara Arm Bar on him. Cole tapped out very quickly, but Riddle would leave the submission hold locked on until the rest of Undisputed Era ran out to break it up. Riddle would slide out of the ring as Undisputed Era came out to check on Cole.
  • In the main event of the WWE Network hour, Kushida and two mystery partners were scheduled to take on Imperium. Kushida would select Breezango to be his partners. After a lengthy match, Kushida would pick up the pinfall victory and quickly slide out of the ring to avoid the other members of Imperium. Walter, suspicious by his absence would appear giving Kushida a boot to the face as he stood on the stage. NXT would go off the air as Walter and his three cohorts stood over Kushida. Interestingly, the WWE Network Hour of NXT ended 10 minutes early. Hopefully they’ll get the timing better because they’re live on USA Network next week and there’s not much room for error on cable television.

•Closing Commentary

– Get ready; next week, the wrestling landscape changes! I am so excited. We have a whole new lineup of shows. Say goodbye to free time if you want to keep up in real time! Raw on Mondays, NXT and AEW both live at the same time on Wednesdays, and Smackdown on Fridays, and that’s just the primary shows on cable television. Impact will soon start on AXS TV on Tuesdays as well. AXS also has WOW and NJPW shows on Saturday. There’s also ROH and the NWA, which are set to begin a new television show as well. There are also rumors of a WWE studio show as well as an AEW studio show, though there aren’t many details yet. There’s just so much wrestling, it will be fascinating to see what companies suffer. There are only so many hours in a week and so many dollars to be spent. Something will have to give. Regardless of your opinion of AEW and/or WWE, competition will only be beneficial. Competition breeds creativity. It will give wrestlers more options and viewers more options. If you’re not happy with Raw, there is so much wrestling elsewhere readily available, you don’t have to watch it. Ratings will be more important than ever, especially on Wednesday nights where AEW and NXT go head to head. Unfortunately for UK viewers, neither show will be available on Wednesday nights from my understanding. I may be wrong, but I think the only way to watch NXT – without the use of some nefarious means – will be to wait until it airs on Thursday. AEW also announced today that the only way to watch the shows live at this moment is to pay $4.99 per month and watch through Fite TV. Neither of these are good options, and both WWE and AEW should look into pleasing the international audiences. Canada also doesn’t have USA Network, which means the Canadian wrestling fans will be forced to wait until Thursday for NXT, and I’m not aware of a way for Canadian fans to watch AEW.

I know both WWE and AEW are based in the United States, but they have huge international audiences. AEW missed a huge opportunity to capture the UK market after they found out they’d have no way to watch NXT live, and to the point they’ve failed. Hopefully they find a good solution. Everyone rest up this weekend; there’s a lot of wrestling to watch next week!
