WEEKLY OVERVIEW – ROH (thru 3/27): Top stories of week, major show lineups, live event results, schedule of live events, noteworthy social media posts, more

The following is the latest in a new series of weekly in-depth articles exclusive to PWTorch which will help put in perspective major wrestling promotions with a weekly overview, looking at news and roster developments, results, future line-ups, social media activity, key interviews, plus a timely commentary at the end. We will be featuring similar features on other promotions each week and each will be updated weekly.

•Top Stories of the Week

• Flip Gordon returned to in-ring action this week. Flip Gordon proceed to re-injure his knee at an Over The Top Wrestling event in Northern Ireland. ROH released the following press release as a result.

“Flip Gordon has re-injured his right knee and will not be able to appear at Road to G1 Supercard in Baltimore on March 31.

Gordon, who suffered an MCL tear in his knee during a match in January and was medically cleared to return to in-ring action last week, competed in a match in Northern Ireland for Over the Top Wrestling on March 24. When he woke up the following morning, his knee was ‘locked up.’

He was able to make his flight home and visited his doctor this morning. There is concern that Gordon may have suffered a ‘bucket handle’ meniscus tear, which would require surgery and keep him out of action for four-to-six months. The extent of the injury will not be known until the results of Gordon’s MRI exam are in.”

It is feared that Gordon will be out for 4-6 months.

• Cary Silkin was photographed backstage at Smackdown’s live event in Allentown, PA on Monday night. Not much is being made of the event, as Silkin is a resident of Allentown. At this point it should be seen as no more than good will by WWE.\
• G1 Supercard will air in a two part special on AXS TV on April 12th and 19th. The annonce team has not been confirmed. But the idea of Jim Ross calling a non-WWE event at Madison Square Garden is very intriguing.
• It has been reported, and subsequently confirmed by talent, that Lucha Underground has released all talent. As a result, a rather large pool of talent are now on the market.

•Closing Commentary

No build to G1 and ROH is subservient.

As Harley R. Pageot pointed out in his TV report, if you don’t follow ROH here on the Torch, or have Honorclub, you would have little to no idea what is actually happening at Madison Square Garden in a little over a week.

This is easily the biggest show in ROH’s 17 year history. I understand that the building sold out in 15 minutes, but does ROH know that you can make a huge multiple of money on PPV buys as opposed to the live gate? Does ROH management care about making as much money as possible? Or is ROH a non-profit for artistes moonlighting as professional wrestlers.

I have nothing to gain if ROH makes more money, but it is concerning to me that a company can have such a great opportunity with this event to simply creatively limp into the event.

I recently talked that I was concerned that ROH was looking like the lesser promotion based on total number of matches on the card, and what is main eventing the show.

ROH has two exclusive matches, while New Japan has three exclusive matches. Also, there is no doubt in my mind that Jay White and Okada will close this show. There is no way that New Japan would allow a Lethal/Taven/Scurll match to main event a Tokyo Dome type show in Japan. As a result, this shows how much power New Japan has in this relationship. This to me only hurts ROH and makes all of its titles seem a little more less than to me.
