NXT TV REPORT
JANUARY 23, 2019
TAPED IN ORLANDO, FLA. AT FULL SAIL UNIVERSITY
REPORT BY JUSTIN JAMES, PWTORCH CONTRIBUTOR

[Q1] Pre-credits video has a short recap of Takeover: Phoenix.

1. IO SHIRAI & KAIRI SANE vs. MARINA SHAFIR & JESSAMYN DUKE

Shafir and Shirai start, and Shafir takes Shirai down. Shirai flips away, then backflips across the ring and dropkicks Shafir. Dobule tags. Suke shows off how much taller she is, so Sane chops Duke. Duke takes Sane down, then they swap spots a number of tops. Sane gets a two count and transitions right to a front facelock and takes in Shirai. Duke tags double team offense from all directions at once. Shirai lands double knees in te corner. Shafir gets on the apron to stop a suicide dive letting Duke take Shirai out. Shafir tags in. Shafir and Duke hit a combination on Shirai for two. Butterfly suplex keeps Shirai out of her corner. Shirai is able to trip Duke up and break free, but Shafir gets the tag to stop Shirai. Shirai flips up and out of the corner using the turnbuckle and the impact lets her get separation from Shafir. Shafir can’t keep Shirai away from Sane, who comes in house on fire. Interceptor spear puts Shafir on the mat, and Sane hits the sliding elbow. Shirai clears Duke off the apron. Shirai pops Sane up into an elbow drop on Shafir, then dives onto Duke ringside, Sane nails the Insane Elbow for the win.

WINNERS: Io Shirai & Kairi Sane at 6:36.

(J.J.’s Analysis: This is the second time we have seen Duke and Shafir on TV and the second time they have have lost fairly quickly. If the WWE thinking is that Duke and Shafir are going to the main roster to do a Four Horsewomen vs. Four Horsewomen match, I beg them to turn back. Duke and Shafir are nowhere near the level of anyone else who would be involved in that match.)

[Q2] Video package on Johnny Gargano defeating Ricochet for the NXT North American Championship.

Interview with Gargano right after his match. He says he delivered on his promises, a match of the year and a title. He says that winning feels great and looks ecstatic.

Backstage with Bianca Belair. She says that being “undefeated” is a mindset. And she had the title in her grasp and she is still undefeated. She is asked about what Sam Roberts said on the pre-show, that putting Belair in the match was a waste. Belair no-sells Roberts and tell the camera that Sam Roberts can kiss her a–.

Video package on War Raiders beating the Undisputed Era.

War Raiders are asked about their win. Rowe says that Undisputed Era has won their respect, but the era is over. Hanson says that the war has started.

Recap of Matt Riddle defeated Kassius Ohno for the third time in a row.

Interview with Riddle. He says that this wasn’t about the victory since he has already beaten Ohno twice, now he has broken Ohno.

( J.J.’s Analysis: PERFECT. Riddle is now serious and dropped all the silliness and I could not be happier.)

[Q3] Male competitor of the year was awarded to NXT Champion Tommaso Ciampa, he rejected the award. Then they go to an extended look at Aleister Black failing to defeat Ciampa. Then a video showing what happened after Takeover went off the air, with Velveteen Dream challenging Gargano and Ciampa, Black, Cole, and Ricochet getting involved, setting up the “Halftime Heat” match during the Super Bowl.

[Q4] STREET PROFITE (ANGELO DAWKINS & MONTEZ FORD) vs. FORGOTTEN SONS (WESLEY BLAKE & STEVE CUTLER w/Jaxson Ryker)

Cutler angers Dawkins who takes him down, but they roll into the Sons’ corner. Ford lets a hand and they send Blake and Cutler to the outside. The Street Profits double team Blake and Cutler in the ring too, but Blake hits a clothesline on Ford and isolate him.

[Q4] Blake bucklebombs Ford into Cutler’s knees, cover, Dawkins breaks it up. Ford is able to get Blake and Cutler out of the ring, Blake climbs up and whiffs a crossbody, but Ford is able to make the tag to Dawkins who goes on the attack. Dawkins easily handles both Blake and Cutler singlehandedly for an extended amount of time. Ford leaps over the top to keep Cutler out of the ring and Dawkins spears Blake for two. Ford takes a tip from the Solo cup, they hit an elextric chair/stop rope neckbreaker combo but Cutler breaks the tag up. Cutler yanks Dawkins from the ring, and the distraction lets Ryker take ford out ringside. Dawkins and Ryker glare at each other, start to move toward each other, and Blake has a suicide dive to Dawkins. They hit an inverted DDT/second rope stomp combo (“The Memory That Will Remain”) for the win.

WINNERS: The Forgotton Sons at 7:15.

(J.J.’s Analysis: I have yet to see anything from Forgotten Sons that justifies their continued presence on this show.)

FINAL THOUGHTS:Nothing noteworthy or exciting here, other than Belair calling out Sam Roberts for his comments.
