SPOTLIGHTED PODCAST ALERT (YOUR ARTICLE BEGINS A FEW INCHES DOWN)...

The following is the latest in a new series of weekly in-depth articles exclusive to PWTorch which will help put in perspective major wrestling promotions with a weekly overview, looking at news and roster developments, results, future line-ups, social media activity, key interviews, plus a timely commentary at the end. We will be featuring similar features on other promotions each week and each will be updated weekly.

•Top Stories of the Week

  • The news this week has taken place in the ring. Last week the Cruise of Jericho took place. Saturday was the first opportunity for those who did not attend the event to see the matches that took place. Flip Gordon won the Sea of Honor Tournament and will receive a future ROH World Championship opportunity as a result. The rest of the event is summarized below, as well as a link to our detailed report.

  • Survival of the Fittest took place in Columbus, Ohio. This annual event crowns the winner of a one night tournament. The winner also receives a future ROH World Championship opportunity. Marty Scurll was the winner of the tournament, after the show was off the air, Scurll announced that a lot has been made about his future. But he stated that he was, “not going anywhere.”

  • The Wrestling Observer has reported that Adam Page has turned down a recent offer to re-sign with Ring of Honor. The Wrestling Observer was also the first to report that Page had turned down an offer with WWE.

•Live Event Results

The Cruise of Jericho special PPV “Streaming for Vengeance” debuted on the Fite app on Saturday, Nov. 3. The show started with a video package of the 1st round highlights of the 16-man tournament. Below are the results of the first round of the tournament.

  • Christopher Daniels defeated Delirious with best moonsault ever.
  • Dalton Castle (w/ replacement Boys) defeated Matt Taven by disqualification after Taven hit Castle with the real ROH world title.
  • Marty Scurll defeated Rhett Titus with graduation.
  • Mark Briscoe defeated Will Ferrara with froggy-bow.
  • Flip Gordon defeated Silas Young with a TKO into a cutter.
  • Adam Page defeated Frankie Kazarian with rite of passage.
  • Cheeseburger defeated Beer City Bruiser with a body slam.
  • Jay Briscoe defeated Kenny King with a big boot.

The show itself featured the Quarter-final, semi-final, and finals of the Sea of Honor Tournament; in which the winner will receive a future ROH World Championship opportunity.

  • (Quarter-Final) Ashley Remington (Castle’s Chikara character) defeated Christopher Daniels at 7:16
  • (Quarter-Final) Flip Gordon defeated Marty Scurll at 11:14
  • (Quarter-Final) Jay Briscoe defeated Cheeseburger at 6:33
  • (Quarter-Final) Mark Briscoe defeated Adam Page at 10:29
  • (Semi-Final) Flip Gordon defeated Dalton Castle at 8:52
  • (Semi-Final) Jay Briscoe defeated Mark Briscoe at 10:49
  • (Final) Flip Gordon defeated Jay Briscoe at 10:54 to win the Sea of Honor Tournament.
  • The Elite (Kenny Omega, Cody, & Marty Scurll) defeated The Bucks of Jericho, or is it Y2Jackson? (Chris Jericho, Matt Jackson, & Nick Jackson) at 23:17

  10. Marty Scurll defeated Guerrero Maya Jr. (pinned at 5:18) & Jonathan Gresham (pinned at 7:20) & PJ Black (pinned at 17:46) & Adam Page (pinned at 23:30) & Christopher Daniels at 24:31 to win the Survival of the Fittest Tournament. As a result Scurll has earned a future ROH world title opportunity.

•ROH In The Media

  • Jericho had two podcasts this week that involved ROH talent. The first was released on 10/24 and it focused on the behind the scenes on the Jericho Cruise. Jericho talked about pitching the idea to Triple H and who turned him down on making appearances. He also discussed why Vince McMahon does not like cruises

  • Jericho’s second podcast of the week was not his own, he was on the Ross Report. They talked all things current in the world of Jericho. Hurricane Helms was his guest later in the podcast. The two discussed teh cruise as well as Helms’ ROH status.

•Closing Commentary

Survival of the Fittest was another example of ROH’s slow transition away from “The Elite.” Cody, Matt Jackson, and Nick Jackson lost their ROH Six-Man Tag-Team Championships to The Kingdom. This match took place in the middle of the card, as it should at an annual event in my opinion. But, we are officially in the ROH world where Cody and The Young Bucks are working mid-card matches.

I know what your thinking. But, Tyler Hangman, and Marty were in the main event with Scurll winning the whole night.

I hear you, believe me. As we know, Scurll is the only member of The Elite that is signed through G1 Supercard. As a result, he is easily the biggest star ROH has until April. If I had Marty Scurll signed to my wrestling promotion for the next six months, he would win every event.

All of that being said. I thought that Survival of the Fittest was a fantastic show, and it would have been a fantastic show without any of The Elite guys. This show showed how ROH has and always will have the ability to keep things fresh by bringing in unique talent from NJPW, CMLL, and the U.S. indy scene.

This ability paired with interesting young talent (Eli Isom) and established talent (Jeff Cobb) make the future of ROH exciting. To those that are writing post-mortems on ROH wrestling post-“The Elite” crew, the future of ROH is bright and I, for one, can’t wait to see what happens next.
