They Showed a video package showcasing The Lucha Bros tag team (Pentagon Jr. and Rey Fenix). They showed the Lucha Bros tearing up there contracts with Selina de La Renta and aligning with Konnan.
The Fusion intro played.
Matt Striker previewed the main event for tonight which is a tag team championship match between The Lucha Bros and the team of Drago and Rey Horus. Also, tonight PCO takes on Homicide, and Fred Yehi takes on Richard Holiday.
(1) Richard Holliday vs. Fred Yehi (w/Tom Lawler & Simon Gotch)
The two start off the match with some chain wrestling. Yehi looked to be the better grappler and start to toy with Holliday as they scrapped. Yehi stomps the hand of Holliday. Yehi sent Holliday into the corner face first then hit a German suplex for a two count. When Holliday fought back and gained the upper hand he took his time pandering to the crowd. Yehi was able to wipe the legs out from underneath Holliday and then Yehi hit his signature bicycle kicks to the chest. Yehi hit a back fist to the ear of Holliday then a double stomp to the back followed by a unique looking submission move he calls the Koji Clutch which made Holliday tap out.
WINNER: Fred Yehi
(Karcher’s Analysis: Not really much to this match. I think it’s a good idea to give Yehi a decisive victory as I could see Yehi getting some kind of a push soon if MLW is as high on him as I am. This is only my second time ever seeing Holliday wrestle with the other time being the Battle Riot. I can’t say I’m a fan. He seems very boring in the ring and not in a restrained way that reflects character work like The Mizz bit more like Tino Sabbatelli or someone of that ilk.)
They showed footage of the attack on Kevin Sullivan last week at the hands of The New Hart Foundation. (which was awesome btw if you haven’t seen it yet go back and watch it) Sullivan is apparently still recovering from his injuries but we did get a video of Brian Pillman Jr. explaining his actions. Pillman was in a robe with a glass of wine. He said he gets goosebumps when he hears Kevin Sullivan’s name but he doesn’t get nightmares anymore. He said he put the boogyman out of his misery. He mocked Sullivan’s appraisal of himself. He said he has a legacy and a loyalty to the Hart Foundation. He said he can’t take over MLW alone and he can’t take it over with Sullivan’s out of date tactics. He said Sullivan is still the same rodent that stepped into the ring with his dad all those years ago and a leopard can’t change its spots.
They showed a video package showcasing Homicides history with MLW. They showed him attacking Court Bauer and some footage of him running wild and looking like a total outlaw. Good package.
(2) Homicide vs. PCO
The two madmen put forehead to forehead as they exchanged some trash talking. Then they began to exchange kicks and punches. PCO let Homicide hit him and no-sold the strikes. PCO started to dominate the offense until Homicide used a rake to the eye. PCO hit a sit-down piledriver for a two count. Homicide hit a drop down toehold and PCO hit the middle turnbuckle. Homicide hit an exploder suplex into the corner turnbuckle. Homicide hit a delayed neck breaker and then followed up with a jumping knee stick from the middle rope for a two count. Homicide tossed PCO outside the ring and then hit a sexton to the floor on PCO. Homicide tossed PCO into the ring post. La Renta was sitting front row. Perhaps scouting? Back in the ring PCO choke slammed Homicide. Homicide rolled out of the ring and PCO hit a suicide dive nailing Homicide on the floor. PCO goes to the top rope and hits a huge moonsault for a two count. PCO went to the other turnbuckle and hit a frog splash for another two. PCO then climbed a third turnbuckle but homicide sprung up and hit a superplex on PCO. Homicide placed PCO on the top turnbuckle and hit a side cutter off the top. PCO no sold Homicide’s clotheslines and a boot to the head. PCO then hit Homicide with a big forearm to the face for the win.
WINNER: PCO
(Karcher’s Analysis: Decent match. These two guys are veterans in the ring and while they may not have the speed and the high flying ability of some of their younger cohorts, they make up for that with unique storytelling within matches. This match like a lot of MLW matches was unfortunately too short to see the fruits of that labor and the match never really kicks into that next gear required to make it a great match. PCO hitting a suicide dive with his size and age is impressive, even if half the big guys in the industry are hitting those dives regularly now. I like the matchup as it doesn’t allow either wrestler’s weaknesses show. They matched up well and had a good powerhouse brawl style fight. I just wish it was longer. I like the added element of La Renta in the crowds possibly scouting for her faction. Homicide is the obvious choice with the latin American connection but since he lost I won’t rule out that she now has her eyes on recruiting PCO. Something to keep an eye on.)
They aired a promo of Abyss talking about the upcoming match at War Games. He said was excited when Callihan called him asking him to be in the match. He said his team is a lethal combination of destruction. He said he loves war and he loves games. He said he is going to teach everyone the meaning of pain and suffering. He called out Dreamer, Strickland, and Hennigan. He said it’s going to be fun and it’s going to be real. He said he is going t show, everyone, just what a monster he is.
They showed replays from last weeks singles match between Jason Cade and Jimmy Yuta. They showed the footage of Rick Giddens interfering and then went backstage to Kaci Lennox with Jason Cade. Lennox called Cade’s win controversial and Cade took offense to that. He said he beat Yuta all by himself and now he is going to focus on winning the Middleweight championship. He said that they call him deuces because he is the S!@# and he doesn’t even care if they bleep it. (They Did.)
Matt Striker hyped up MLW’s upcoming show Fury Road on October 3rd in New York City. PCO will take on L.A Park. Also, the World Heavyweight Championship will be defended. Tom Lawler, Sami Callihan, Jimmy Havoc, Tommy Dreamer, MJF, Aria Blake will also be on the card.
They showed a video package featuring Low Ki’s warning to Fenix and Konnan regarding their upcoming match at War Games.
They showed another video package highlighting the events that lead to Team Strickland vs. Team Callihan in the upcoming War Games match.
(3) The Lucha Bros (Pentagon Jr. & Rey Fenix) vs. Drago & Rey Horus
Drago and Pentagon star the match. They spend a minute or so trying to intimidate each other. When Pentagon went for his Zero Fear hand signal Drago grabbed Pentagon’s arm. Fenix then jumped in a super kicked Drago’s hand away. This lead to a free for all and all four men exchanged a series of kicks leading to all four men being down in the center of the ring. Fenix and Horus roll out and Drago and Pentagon start to level each other with forearms and chops. Fenix slides in and superkicks Drago. Horus tries to join in but is taken out by Pentagon. Pentagon held Horus over his knees as Fenix double stomped Horus down into Pentagons Knees from the top rope. Drago broke up the pin attempt at two. Pentagon and Fenix tried to double team Drago with the tower of London but Drago managed to arm drag his way out of it. Seconds later, however, both men hit Drago with a superkick. Horus then appeared out of nowhere and tried to hit a cross body on both men. He missed slightly and then was immediately double teamed by the Lucha Bros. Horus jumped from the top rope and hit an arm drag on Fenix. Drago attempted to suicide dive onto Pentagon but Pentagon kicked Drago’s head as he dove through stopping him dead in his tracks and leaving him on the middle rope. Horus then front flip dove over the top of Drago onto Fenix outside the ring. Pentagon and Drago back in the ring one on one. Pentagon hit a snap reverse neck breaker in the corner on Drago. Pentagon got a two count but that was broken up by Horus. Horus and Pentagon exchange slaps and Pentagon gets the better of the exchange as Horus is knocked to the matt. Horus hits a Pele kick and then attempts a springboard elbow drop but Pentagon kicked Horus in the gut on his way down. Horus then hit a standing C4 and got a two count but was broken up by a beautiful springboard dropkick by Fenix. Fenix double stomped Horus after bouncing off the ropes in three separate places. Drago comes in and hits a huge DDT on Fenix and gets a two count. Drago goes to the top rope but Fenix hits a roll thought uppercut that sends Drago down to the floor outside. Horus then hurricanranas Fenix off the top rope back into the ring. Horus then hits a spectacular tilt-a-whirl DDT on Pentagon for a very close near fall. Drago hit a huricanrana on Fenix outside the ring. Inside the ring, Pentagon hit Rey Horus with a Penta-Driver for a near fall. Pentagon and Rey Fenix then hit a package piledriver with Fenix’s double stomp adding downward force. Fenix then suicide dove out onto Drago on the floor and Pentagon went for the cover and got a very believable near fall (I thought that was it for sure). Fenix ran in and hit a spinning kick to the face of Horus. The Lucha Bros then repeated the same piledriver move they just did and got the win.
WINNERs: The Lucha Bros (Pentagon Jr. & Rey Fenix)
(Karcher’s Analysis: Great match. As usual Pentagon and Fenix brought there A game and put on a tremendous performance. The crazy amount of athleticism these two show every single match is incredible. They are the most reliable workers in the company and MLW would be wise to continue featuring them so heavily. Drago and Horus showed they can hang with The Lucha Bros and I wouldn’t mind seeing them come back for some more MLW tapings. Even though I was pretty sure they weren’t going to lose the tag titles there were some very believable near falls in the match that mad me worried once or twice. I’ve said it before but I love the idea of a wrestler hitting a big move that gets a two and then just immediately hitting it again for the win. Always keeps you on your toes. Just a fine tag match here definitely worth watching if you haven’t already)
Fenix got on the mic and tanked the fans as they threw money into the ring. Fenix said he is proud because La Razza is here. Pentagon got on the mic and thanked Drago and Horus for coming. Then he said something in Spanish that I’m not cultured enough to be able to translate and the fans chanted please come back.
They showed a graphic for the War Games and officially announced that will air next week! Also, we will hear from Tom Lawler about the status of the championship match he earned at Battle Riot.
FINAL THOUGHTS: Decent night of action for MLW. The main event tag match was the only match I would go out of your way to see, but the other two singles matches were decent enough to entertain if you wanted to watch the whole show. We got an answer from Brian Pillman for his actions last week and although that left a bit to be desired when compared to the awesome beat down last week, I’m still invested in this storyline more than any of the others in MLW right now. I can’t wait for Pillman to finally step into the ring so I can get a good sense of his abilities. Also, Tom Lawler should be coming into play coming up after War Games as Low Ki’s next challenger which should be interesting. (Assuming Low Ki beats Rey Fenix at War Games) MLW looks to have some exciting things up its sleeve as next week we see the War Games match and some interesting paths for post War Games are already forming. It’s an exciting time to be watching Fusion. That’s all for this week folks. Be sure to check back next week to read my recap of MLW’s War Games exclusively right here on PWtorch.com. I’m Kris Karcher, thanks for reading!
