SPOTLIGHTED PODCAST ALERT (YOUR ARTICLE BEGINS A FEW INCHES DOWN)...
Cody Rhodes defeated Nick Aldis at ALL IN on Saturday night to capture the NWA World Heavyweight Championship.
Cody was busted open in the match after attempting a dive off the top rope to the outside, but he was caught by an Aldis forearm.
The NWA World Title is back on the Rhodes family for the first time since August 9, 1986, when Ric Flair beat Cody’s father, Dusty Rhodes, at a show in St. Louis. Dusty was a three-time NWA World Heavyweight Champion, winning the championship for the first time in 1979 over Harley Race.
Cody’s win ends Aldis’ run with the NWA Title at 266 days; he captured the championship from Tim Storm last December. Cody’s win also marks the first time the NWA World Heavyweight Title has changed hands in the state of Illinois since Feb. 20, 1989, when Ricky Steamboat beat Ric Flair at the Chi-Town Rumble.
Tommy Dreamer said it regarding the NWA World Heavyweight Title, and it goes for me as well.
“It still means something to me!”
Congratulations, Cody!
