Jerry Lawler’s Hall of Fame Bar & Grille Live Results
September 3, 2016
Memphis, Tenn.
Report by VIP member John C. in St. Louis, Mo.
Held in conjunction with the grand opening of Jerry Lawler’s new establishment, a ring was placed in the middle of busy Beale Street – just steps in front of the restaurant. A crowd of 200-250 was joined throughout the hour-long show by dozens of curious passers-by stopping to watch at any given moment. Veteran promoter Randy Hales welcomed the crowd and introduced legendary Memphis referee Jerry Calhoun, then Lawler.
Lawler welcomed two stars of the movie “A Chrismas Story,” Scotty Schwartz (“Flick”) and Zach Ward (the bully Scut Farkis), to the ring. Ward grabbed the mic and cut a heel promo, suggesting that Jerry never had the courage to stand up to a bully. Lawler picked up Ward and teased a bodyslam, then – after being dissuaded by referee Calhoun – set him down and invited a host of children into the ring to beat up the bully.
Randy Hales and Lawler’s business partner, Barry Aycock, handled ring-announcer duties and crowd announcements.
(1) “Superstar” Bill Dundee pinned Asian Assassin #1 in 2:00 after a big boot. Asian Assassins #1 and #2 performed “twin magic” when referee Jerry Calhoun had his back turned, but ultimately to no avail.
(2) Derrick King pinned Scott Ronan in 4:00 via superkick. Ronan performed quality trash-talking to ringside fans and heelish behavior early on before receiving his comeuppance.
(3) Koko B. Ware defeated Justin Cole in 2:15. Cole attacked Ware prior to the bell, but the Bird Man “flapped up” and countered a backdrop attempt with a DDT for the win. After the match, Ware invited kids into the ring for a pep talk about getting good grades and going to church on Sunday, then celebrated with his bird dance.
(4) Jerry Lawler defeated Doug Gilbert in 14:30 (!) via schoolboy roll-up. Prior to the match, Gilbert introduced his manager Nate “The Rat” Whitlock. Referee Jerry Calhoun patted down Whitlock and confiscated several international objects, but Whitlock managed to slip one to Gilbert. Gilbert took the occasion to grab the mic and taunt some of the more vocal ringside fans, including a woman sporting Alabama Crimson Tide attire. A majority of the match consisted of such mini-promos from Gilbert, countered by mic work from Lawler defending the fans and questioning Gilbert’s courage. Gilbert used the international object to gain an unfair advantage several times. Eventually, Whitlock held Lawler for a Gilbert punch, but Lawler ducked and rolled up Gilbert for the win.
A fun show – with a solid helping of vintage Memphis storytelling – at venue that’s a must-visit for wrestling fans.
