SPOTLIGHTED PODCAST ALERT (YOUR ARTICLE BEGINS A FEW INCHES DOWN)...
Update: A press release was issued Tuesday night officially announcing Jim Ross’s new announcing gig with CBS Sports.
Ross will call the “Knockout Night at The D” boxing card on Saturday, March 12 in Las Vegas. The broadcast on CBS Sports Network will begin a series of eight monthly events.
Other scheduled dates are April 16, May 13, and June 10. Planned dates in September, October, November, and December will be announced at a later time.
The Associated Press first reported Ross’s deal with CBS Sports on Tuesday afternoon.
Ross will be joined by Al Bernstein on commentary. The duo worked together when Ross called a one-off boxing show on Fox Sports in 2014.
“I can’t overnight become a boxing expert,” Ross told the AP. “There will be learned boxing fans, long-time fans, that are going know infinitely more about boxing than I do, and I have no problem with that. My strengths are storytelling and getting you to know the fighter, and then bringing that spontaneity, that voice that cuts through the clutter.”
Ross has a content deal with Fox Sports, now a boxing commentary deal with CBS Sports, an endorsement deal for the Fite TV App, and started a new pro wrestling announcing role with AXS TV earlier this month.
Ross’s first New Japan broadcast on AXS TV will air Friday, March 4, the weekend before his first boxing call for CBS Sports.
“I never said I was retired,” Ross told the AP. “I never found the gig that fit what I needed. The need wasn’t just the money. It wasn’t the money. The need was, can I do something that I feel at this stage of my life, at 64 – what can I do that, I’m motivated to get up and go to work, get on that plane again, pack the bag again, check in the hotel again? It’s got to be a fun project.”
[ FYI: The “Knockout Night at the D” series, created by the D Las Vegas and DLVC, along with Neon Star Media and Roy Englebrecht Promotions, will be held at the DLVEC open-air venue located adjacent to the D Las Vegas. The inaugural event on Mar. 12 will take place inside the DLVEC’s 20,000-square-foot tent. ]
