SPOTLIGHTED PODCAST ALERT (YOUR ARTICLE BEGINS A FEW INCHES DOWN)...
After ten years on top of WWE, John Cena took a break. Not a vacation, though, as he took a hosting gig for the new Fox TV series, “American Grit.”
In media interviews while filming the show, Cena seemed to have a new perspective on his career and trying to build up the WWE roster. Now, Cena is talking about retirement, which could be years from now. But, Cena is aware that the clock is ticking.
““I’ve always sworn to myself that if I can’t keep up with the current level athletically, it’s my time to take another role, whether that’s commentating on the matches or stepping behind the curtain and molding younger talent,” Cena told the Wall Street Journal in a new interview promoting his role in the new “Sisters” comedy movie.
“I always want to do whatever I can to help the industry. I see firsthand how happy we make kids and families. When you get a kid to sit down and have a conversation with [their] Superman, it’s the coolest thing. It makes their day. That’s a pretty cool, unique thing.”
Cena also talked about his decision to walk away from typical action hero roles and try comedy through Sisters and “Trainwreck” with Amy Schumer.
“You run from explosions, beat people up. I do that now with 20,000 people cheering me on every night,” Cena said of the action roles “not making much sense” to him.
Cena may not be ready to retire just yet, but it’s starting to creep into his mind. Cena has already said that he is going to start cutting back on his schedule. The WWE needs to realize that Cena is not going to be around forever, and that someone else is going to have to step up and become the #1 face of the company.
