In Brief: Samoa Joe’s return to Ring of Honor could spur new interest in his action figures.

Action Figure Spotlight #68: Samoa Joe

After years of bad booking, awful gimmicks, and wasted opportunities, Samoa Joe could become one of the hottest wrestlers in the U.S. again.

Joe debuted in TNA amidst much fanfare thanks to his first run in Ring of Honor. His rare mix of size, speed, in-ring ability, and charisma made him look like the guy to take TNA to the big time. A memorable chase of Kurt Angle’s TNA World Title culminated in the best match in TNA history and one of the most revolutionary wrestling matches of the last 15 years.

But a variety of roadblocks in TNA derailed Joe. As Joe’s push stalled, so too did interest in his collectibles. But a return to ROH - not to mention a possible A.J. Styles-like tour of New Japan Pro Wrestling and the U.S. indy scene, or perhaps a WWE contract - could breathe new life into Joe’s collectibles.

Joe made his action figure debut in 2006, when Marvel’s Toy Biz company was producing TNA action figures. Joe appeared in Toy Biz’s fifth series of TNA figures, complete with an X Division trophy and removable towel. There are two versions of this figure: one with black and blue tights, with other with black and brown. Both figures tend to sell about the same, about $10-15 loose with accessories or $30-40 packaged. Toy Biz also paired Joe with longtime rival Styles in its TNA Sacrifice two-packs. The Joe figure in this set is similar to the other figure, but with black and white trunks. Mint-on-card two-packs of A.J. and Joe can sell anywhere from $30 to $50.

Joe was also a big part of Jakks Pacific’s TNA line that was launched in 2010. Unfortunately, many of these figures capture Joe at his TNA worst: black and brown pants and tribal face paint. The only thing missing is the Rambo knife. This figure appears in Jakks’s TNA Deluxe Impact Series 1, and a similar version was included in the TNA Cross the Line two-packs with Mick Foley. If you really want one, you can probably find one for a couple bucks.

Jakks turned Joe into one of the most ridiculous looking wrestling toys of all time when it included him in its line of TNA Genesis low budget figures. These figures had the same detailed heads as the Deluxe Impact toys, but they were stuck on small, skinny bodies and sold at discount retailers like Big Lots. One of these figures will only set you back a couple bucks, and is almost worth owning just because of how hideous it is.

Joe’s best figure from Jakks was included in the fifth series of TNA Deluxe Impact. This figure captures Joe’s much more classic look, with simple green and black trunks. This figure can usually be found for about $10; signed versions were sold through TNA’s website, and still pop up on eBay regularly for $25 or less.
