WWE Main Event Results
September 9, 2014
Wilkes-Barre, Pa.
Aired on WWE Network
Report by James Caldwell, PWTorch assistant editor

Full pyro, then Michael Cole introduced the show alongside Byron Saxton. Cole relayed breaking news for Night of Champions - Roman Reigns vs. Seth Rollins added to the PPV. Plus, Randy Orton vs. Chris Jericho in a singles match. Interesting. That explains why WWE went ahead with the third match in the Jericho vs. Bray Wyatt series on Raw to get a different match out of Jericho on PPV before he leaves and most likely give Orton a needed big-match victory.

To start Main Event, Seth Rollins was introduced to the ring. The MITB briefcase holder with no one to cash in his briefcase on stood in the ring waiting for "You Sold Out" chants to start. They did and he waited for the chants to grow louder before drowning out.

Rollins welcomed everyone to "Where Are They Now?" starring the most powerful group in WWE history. Gibe it up for The Shield. A graphic appeared on the screen from more innocent times. Rollins said they were three of the most dominant stars in WWE history. So, where are they now? First, Dean Ambrose. He made one critical, fatal error (laughed to himself) when he decided to go head-to-head with him.

After a video review of The Authority taking out Dean Ambrose last month on Raw, Rollins described Ambrose as a feral animal who needed to be put down. And that brings him to Roman Reigns, who he kept hearing over and over about Reigns being the future of WWE. But, he created Reigns and he is responsible for every success that he ever had. Yes, Reigns may have been an important part of the company's future, but that future became obsolete when Reigns targeted him. Rollins vowed to destroy Reigns at Night of Champions.

After a video review of The Authority taking out Reigns last night on Raw, Rollins admired his work. Which brings them to himself. Rollins said he is the only man left standing from The Shield. He called himself the future of this company and future WWE World Hvt. champion.

Suddenly, Jack Swagger's music interrupted to bring out Swagger and Zeb Colter, who was apparently set to deport Rollins. Zeb said he doesn't think of Rollins as a great tactician or leader, rather a person scared of his enemies. He called him an opportunist and a sell-out, then said Real Americans don't like to talk about things, but have matches. Before their match, Colter asked the crowd to declare, "We The People." Cue up Swagger waving his American flag. No break before the bell sounded...

1 -- SETH ROLLINS vs. JACK SWAGGER (w/Zeb Colter)

Swagger quickly cleared Rollins from the ring, frustrating the MITB holder, and there's the break 30 seconds into the match.

[Break]

Back from break, Swagger continued an aggressive attack until Rollins cut off Swagger at the knees. Rollins worked over Swagger, then cut off a comeback with a kick to the head. Rollins methodically attacked Swagger, who suddenly teased the Patriot Lock, but Rollins scrambled to the ropes for a break. Rollins tried another kick, but Swagger intercepted with another Patriot Lock application. Rollins teased tapping, but got to the ropes in time. Rollins came back with a top-rope smash, Swagger was slow to recover, and Rollins seized on Swagger's weakened state to deliver a Curb Stomp for the pin and the win.

WINNER: Rollins at 8:59. Fine singles match. Swagger isn't being utilized after losing the feud to Rusev, so he could afford to take a loss.

Locker Room: Heath Slater and Titus O'Neil broke down a diagram of Adam Rose's rabbit getting to Slater the past two weeks.

Announcers: Cole and Saxton segued to a Raw replay focused on the John Cena vs. Paul Heyman confrontation. Specifically Cena using Make-a-Wish to accentuate the point of "Eat, Sleep, Be John Cena." And, Cena challenging Paul Heyman or Brock Lesnar to a fight next Monday on Raw.

Next Monday: John Cena and Brock Lesnar have a face-to-face.

Backstage: Cesaro was shown warming himself up for singles action up next.

[Break]

In-ring: Zack Ryder was in the ring sporting a goatee and trying to look tough. Cesaro, looking like Minoru Suzuki with a towel bouncing off his head on the way to the ring, marched to the ring to take apart Ryder and send a message to his PPV opponent, Sheamus.

2 -- CESARO vs. ZACK RYDER

Ryder delivered an early dropkick sending Cesaro to the floor. Ryder frantically tried to follow up on the outside, allowing Cesaro to smash Ryder's knee into the middle rope. Cesaro continued to work on the knee back in the ring, but he missed a corner dropkick. Ryder took advantage with a running Broski Boot to the face. Ryder followed with a big splash on the outside, but Cesaro blocked a top-rope move and put Ryder in the Big Swing. Not a big reaction for the Swing from a quiet crowd. Cesaro then submitted Ryder by targeting the knee to finish the deal.

WINNER: Cesaro via submission at 2:22. Another heel going over a lesser babyface to set up a Night of Champions match.

Post-match: Renee Young interviewed Cesaro about his victory. Cesaro took exception to Renee suggesting it was a weak victory, prompting Cesaro to hype Ryder as a former U.S. champion to make his win sound impressive. Cesaro then hyped himself as better than U.S. champion Sheamus in all areas. He said he will prove at Night of Champions that he is not just the King of Swing, but the King of Wrestling. And, the new United States champion, Cesaro.

[Break]

Raw Replay: A review of the awful Jerry Springer/Bella Twins segment.

Backstage: Adam Rose's Exotic Express was shown walking down the hallway. Suddenly, there was a dangling carrot hanging in the hallway. The bunny stopped for the carrot, but ducked when Titus O'Neil tried to catch the rabbit, only to take out Heath Slater instead. The rabbit hopped away as Slater Gator argued.

[Break]

3 -- ADAM ROSE vs. TITUS O'NEIL (w/Heath Slater)

The bunny was not part of Rose's pre-match entourage. Meanwhile, Saxton and Cole flipped roles to Saxton heeling on Rose and the bunny (sounding reasonable) and Cole trying to defend the bunny bit as entertaining. Titus dominated Rose, then the bunny hopped down the entrance ramp through the entourage. The bunny eventually hopped on the ring apron to distract Titus as Saxton made sense noting this is unacceptable.

The bunny eventually kicked Slater in the head off the ring apron and Rose rolled up a distracted Titus from behind for the pin and the win. Rose celebrated on the way while Titus simply knelt down in the ring selling frustration with the state of his career.

WINNER: Rose at 2:02. Cole designated to try to hype this as "entertaining" pretty much captures why the gimmick hasn't worked since it was introduced months ago.

[Break]

In-ring: Los Matadores, sans injured El Torito, came to the ring for the default main event of the show. NXT tag champs The Ascension were then introduced, complete with a weird intro video. Cole noted this is a warm-up for the NXT Takeover special this Thursday on WWE Network.

4 -- NXT tag champs THE ASCENSION (KONOR & VIKTOR) vs. LOS MATADORES (DIEGO & FERNANDO) -- non-title match

Presumably with a straight face, Cole hyped The Ascension as one of the most dominant teams in WWE history. Of course, if they never face anyone, it's pretty easy to be dominant tag champs. Ascension dominated early on with in-and-out tags before Diego tried to mount a comeback with high-flying offense. Diego missed a top-rope move, though, and Ascension hit the Fall of Man high/low combination for the pin and the win.

Post-match, The Ascension stood tall in the ring with their music blaring as Cole and Saxton hyped the NXT line-up Thursday on the Network, including the WWE debut of KENTA.

WINNERS: The Ascension at 3:59.
